GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE GARY W. BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 VOL. 98, NO. 21 COPYRIGHT 2015 Georgia Grown Goes Glam Commissioner Gary W. Black, center, with Lydia Mousseau and Marc Mousseau, who raise Registered Ossabaw Island Hogs on their Milledgeville farm. By Amy H. Carter Family farmers who've partnered with the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown marketing program achieved a new pinnacle of success during an elegant soire atop the tallest building in Atlanta Oct. 5. "We're taking Georgia Grown to new heights," said Commissioner Gary W. Black as the sun set over the Atlanta skyline and sponsors and guests dined at tables clothed in gold lam and bathed in candlelight. The event hosted in the law offices of Troutman Sanders on the 52nd floor of the Bank of America Plaza was a test-run for a group of chefs who have been invited to stage a Georgia Grown dinner at the James Beard Foundation in New York City on Oct. 15. Georgia Grown Executive Chef Holly Chute will host Georgia Grown Night at the James Beard House, named for the late Chef James Beard, known as the "Dean of American Cookery." Through a series of cookbooks, television shows and a celebrated cooking school, Beard popularized American cuisine and championed local products and markets. Beard was known for inviting students, authors, chefs and other food and beverage professionals into the kitchen of his Greenwich Village townhouse to talk food. After he died in 1985, celebrity Chef Julia Child urged his friends and supporters to buy the house and dedicate it to furthering Beard's love of American culinary traditions. They continue to operate it as "performance space" for chefs and foodies to this day. Chute will introduce Beard Foundation members and guests to Georgia Grown products with the help of four guest chefs and Mixologist Julian Goglia from The Pinewood in Decatur. Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black joined Public Health Commissioner Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald (l-r, back row), Georgia Organics Board Chair Mandy Mahoney and State Schools Superintendent Richard Woods Oct. 7 in presenting the Golden Radish Award to 39 school districts statewide recognizing their Farm-to-School successes. Collectively, the districts honored at the State Capitol in Atlanta represent 700,000 students. Representatives of the Clarke County School District (front row) accepted a special award for their outstanding efforts to give children hands-on experience at producing their own food and making healthy eating choices. Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Black, Commissioner GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: From humble seeds, a family enterprise grows international roots By Emani Odumosu They say if you want a vision to bloom, all you have to do is plant a seed, nourish it and watch it grow. Kent Hamilton and his family lived by this philosophy literally and figuratively, which yielded a successful produce facility that operates out of two countries. Southern Valley Fruit and Vegetable, founded in 1987, grew from a small piece of land in Colquitt County into a large scale producer whose food at some point has probably finished its journey from farm-to-fork on your kitchen table. Kent Hamilton's daughter Courtney cherishes her heritage, and proudly works every day alongside her brother, aunts, uncles and cousins, along with many other Southern Valley employees. "It means a great deal for me to be a part of our family's business and carry on our legacy," said Courtney Hamilton, Southern Valley Fruit and Vegetable administrator. "I was able to see my dad and grandmother build our family's company from the ground up and that is so special." The once small family business now grows, packages and ships its produce out of three lo- cations: Georgia, Tennessee and the Yucatan Peninsula. Multiple bases of operation allow the company to supply produce year round. The company also operates its own packing facility and runs a trucking company for product shipping. Southern Valley's produce can be found pretty much anywhere across the state, from Walmart to some of your favorite restaurants. The Hamiltons come from a long line of farmers with ample experience in what it takes to produce food. That is why Southern Valley hosts tours and field trips for anyone who is curious to know what it's like to be a farmer. "Even though we live in one of the biggest Ag counties in the state, people may pass fields every day but they have no idea how it's grown or the process it takes to get to the restaurant or the grocery store. It's neat to help educate and stay true to our roots," said Courtney Hamilton. As much as production moves around throughout the year, Courtney Hamilton doesn't hesitate to acknowledge her humble beginnings and that Southern Valley's products are Georgia Grown at heart. "Our home base is in Georgia. That's where we started," said Courtney Hamilton. "We use the Georgia Grown logo on all of our shipping containers. (It's nice) to be able to promote Georgia Grown products and (tell everyone) that it's who we are." Visit www.southernvalley.us for more information on their products. The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences presented Georgia agribusiness specialist Bo Warren with the college's Alumni Award of Excellence during the annual CAES alumni banquet Sept. 25 in Athens. Warren, who graduated from UGA CAES in 1995, has been a leader in the business of agriculture for more than 20 years. He currently leads business promotions for the Georgia Department of Agriculture and serves as director for the Georgia Center of Innovation for Agriculture. "From the farm field to the board and exam rooms, our alumni are leaders in a variety of areas," said Elliott Marsh, president of the UGA CAES Alumni Association. "These awards not only allow us to recognize the accomplishments of our fellow alumni, but also the ways in which CAES has contributed to our collective success." Before joining the staff of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Warren served for 14 years as government affairs coordinator, representing numerous Fortune 500 companies in both Georgia and Washington, D.C. In Sept. 2011, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black tasked Warren with developing the department's first business development division. The mission was, and remains, to identify economic opportunities for the state on both the local and global levels. Warren helped establish an interagency agreement with the Georgia Department of Economic Development's International Trade Team to seek out new markets for Georgia's agricultural products. As a result, Georgia farmers have increased their agricultural exports by 29 percent and generated $690 million in additional sales. In his current position as director of the Office of International Trade and Domestic Marketing, Warren continues to foster international trade. He also works to support Georgia's growing agritourism industry, develop markets for Georgia-grown products inside the United States, and administer the Georgia Agricultural Tax Exemption program. In addition to recognizing several other outstanding alumni, the alumni banquet hosted the induction of former U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss and dairy farmer Thomas Breedlove into the Georgia Agriculture Hall of Fame. Breedlove helped establish the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Walton Electric Membership Cooperative. For more information about the UGA CAES Alumni Association visit caes.uga.edu/ alumni/CAA. OPTIONAL: Race/Ethnic Origin ___________________________________ Male _______ Female _______ blameless and beautiful Broccoli Cheese Soup By Arty Schronce Life is full of stories of innocent people accused of crimes they did not commit. Goldenrod is an innocent plant condemned for the offenses of another. Because this beautiful yellow wildflower is often in bloom at the same time and in the same areas as ragweed, goldenrod unfairly gets the blame for the allergy problems caused by its visually insignificant neighbor. Goldenrod's pollen is too heavy and sticky to move anywhere on its own. That is why goldenrod has showy flowers to attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators that will carry its pollen from one flower to another. This is not true with ragweed, a plant with non-showy green flowers that rely on the wind to disperse their pollen to other ragweed flowers and thus produce seeds. Besides landing on other ragweed flowers, some of the copious and lightweight pollen also lands in eyes and up noses, causing hay fever in some individuals. The misconception about goldenrod and hay fever has kept many Americans from incorporating it into their gardens. That's a shame, because some goldenrods are superb garden perennials. A few nice ones to try are the roughleaved goldenrod (Solidago rugosa), wreath or blue-stemmed goldenrod (Solidago caesia), sweet or anise-scented goldenrod (Solidago odora) and seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens). I am especially fond of the wreath goldenrod because it tolerates shady conditions and has a subtle charm. Sweet goldenrod is another favorite thanks to the fragrance of its leaves, which were used to make "Liberty tea" after the Boston Tea Party. Some goldenrods are aggressive spreaders and can overwhelm nearby plants. However, even these can be useful in meadow gardens and rain gardens. If a goldenrod or any other plant gets out of hand, do not hesitate to pull it up. Goldenrods are good choices for a butterfly garden. They are a favorite of monarchs. They are also a good choice if you want to plant something to help honeybees, native bees and other insect pollinators. I am pleased to see goldenrod for sale as a cut flower at many florists. They usually call it by its genus name Solidago, perhaps because it is grown in Holland or Germany and the growers don't use our English name. Many people buying bouquets of Solidago have no idea that there are probably one or more species of goldenrod growing naturally within five miles of where they live. (Isn't that just like human nature? We ignore our native beauties but go gaga over something we see as more exotic.) Goldenrod may be found for sale at garden centers, nurseries and from mailorder catalogs. Give one or two a try. If you don't have room, then just appreciate and protect the ones you see growing in nature. And please help me clear goldenrod's name. Arty Schronce is the department's resident gardening expert. Georgia Grown is going to New York City Continued From Page 1 to Goglia, Chute will be accompanied by: Chef Jay Swift of 4th & Swift and Noble Fin in Atlanta; Chef Savannah Haseler of Twain's Brewpub & Billiards in Decatur; Chef Kyle Jacovino of The Florence in Savannah; and Pastry Chef Chrysta Poulos of Rocket Farm Restaurants in Atlanta. "I'm super excited," Haseler said of the opportunity to accompany Chute to New York and feature Registered Ossabaw Island Hogs in her dishes for the event. Marc and Lydia Mousseau of Milledgeville founded Registered Ossabaw Island Hogs less than five years ago. Having their product featured at the Beard House so early in their career is an experience that Marc Mousseau calls "surreal." "I was telling a friend of mine about the dinner and he said, `You realize the James Beard House is like the Academy Awards of the culinary world,'" Marc Mousseau said. The elegance of the preview dinner venue and the prominence of the Beard House mark a turning point for Georgia Grown, which assists Georgia producers in marketing their products and building successful family farms and businesses. "This is about Georgia food. It's about Georgia culture," Commissioner Black said. "This food just didn't come out of a box. It didn't come off of a train 3,000 miles away. There's a family behind it." Other Georgia Grown members who have donated food and beverages for the event are: Springer Mountain Farms in Baldwin; Hunter Cattle Co. in Brooklet; B.D. Judge Seafood of Townsend; Plantation Quail in Greensboro; Tiger Mountain Vineyards in Tiger; Yonah Mountain Vineyards in Cleveland; Wolf Mountain Vineyards in Dahlonega; and Radio Roasters Coffee in Scottdale. The Coca-Cola Co., Delta Air Lines, the Georgia Restaurant Association and the Georgia Department of Economic Development are sponsoring Georgia Grown Night at the James Beard House.
