Black, Kroger Executive Assistant Paula Ruehle and Bruce Lucia, president of Kroger's Atlanta Division. Destiny Organics and the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program teamed up to present more than 50 product lines from Georgia vendors directly to buyers for the Atlanta Division of the Kroger grocery store chain Sept. 14. "Georgia Grown Day at Kroger" was also a chance for the department to thank one of its biggest corporate supporters. Georgia Grown Executive Chef Holly Chute prepared lunch for the Atlanta Division's Corporate Staff using meats, produce, bread and beverages donated by Georgia Grown members. "We are grateful for our strong partnership with Kroger and their continued support of the Georgia Grown program," said Commissioner Gary W. Black. "Georgia Grown Day at Kroger was a unique opportunity to showcase dozens of our small Georgia businesses and their products." Everything from jams and jellies to spices to grass-fed beef and Hawaiian rolls were featured. Kroger buyers were invited to stroll the aisles of the display tent and sample at their leisure for new products to add to Kroger's growing Georgia Grown product list. Georgia Grown Profile: Southern Press & Packing sells little berries with a big punch By Emani Odumosu Blueberries are a fun, sweet fruit that can be enjoyed fresh or even baked in a tasty pie. Kids and adults alike enjoy snacking on the popular fruit, but a group of South Georgia farmers took it a step further and created a company dedicated to the small treats. Shawn Davis and Francis Spellman funneled their love for blueberries into Southern Press and Packing, a blueberry processing plant based in Blackshear. The facility packages fresh blueberries and blueberry juice and markets the products under the REGENERATE brand name. Several scientific studies have cast blueberries as a superfood because they are high in antioxidants, potassium and Vitamin C. As a blueberry farmer and husband of a former nurse, Andy Brannen thought it was important to get involved with Southern Press and Packing to help promote these benefits while providing a delicious product. "My wife, myself and two other partners purchased part of the business back in April. The market is in a good spot right now and blueberries are a very healthy product," said Andy Brannen, now CFO of Southern Press and Packing. "One of the things we believe in is promoting a healthy lifestyle." The company is a founding partner in the Blueberry Family Health Foundation, formed to help eradicate Type 2 Diabetes in children through research, education and wellness initiatives. Southern Press and Packing is putting its signature product an all-natural blueberry juice made from Georgia blueberries to work toward that end. REGENERATE juice is packaged in special 4 oz. containers and offered as a healthy choice for Georgia students in school cafeterias across the state. As demand for their product grows, the company shops locally for berries to supplement its own supply. That's why the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown marketing program was a natural fit for the company. "The advertising and the logo tremendously help us," said Andy Brannen. "It helps attract attention." From farmers to merchants and students to homemakers, we have something for everyone. As North America's Premier Farm Show we host 1,200 commercial exhibitors with more than 4,000 product lines that feature the latest technological advances, goods and services that the Ag marketplace has to offer. Unique to the Expo is our 600-acre working research farm where manufacturers and dealers can demonstrate their latest equipment. You are invited to take a front row seat and see how these innovative products and cutting edge technologies might fit into your operation. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, we will be announcing the 26th Annual Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year. This is always an exciting event as we again have 10 outstanding nominees from across the Southeast. James and Tara Lyles from Ringgold are your 2015 Georgia state winners. Rather than just kicking the tires on the latest and greatest farm equipment, visitors to the Expo will be able to get an up close and personal driving experience during test rides on specially designed tracks both inside the exhibit grounds and in the field demo area. Company representatives will be available to answer questions and review the unique features of their equipment. Located inside the exhibit grounds on the east side will be Chevy/GMC, Honda and Yamaha test tracks. Come see the latest cotton pickers, corn and soybean combines, peanut inverters and combines, and hay equipment that will be running in the field demos. John Deere Gators, Titan Tire, Ram Commercial truck and Ford truck test tracks will also be running in the field demos. UAVs will be the centerpiece of the exhibits in AB-1 and UAV demos will take place in the field demos at 10 a.m. and 1p.m. daily. See how this amazing technology might revolutionize your crop scouting tactics. New to the field demos in 2015 is the Compact Tractor driving range, where visitors can test drive and learn more about smaller tractors in the 2040 horsepower range. In its second year, the Hoss Tools Sustainable Living Center is where you can learn everything about sustainable living, including gardening; growing fruits, vegetables and flowers; and bee-keeping to ensure pollination. The Georgia Metals Pavilion at the Hoss Tools Sustainable Living center will be full of exhibitors showcasing the tools of the trade. If it is "edutainment" that you are looking for, take a look at some amazing stock dogs in action, learn horsemanship at the horse demos, meet our 2015 Sunbelt Ag Expo Rodeo Queen, Heather Bundy, and her court, and even take a walk back in time at the antique tractor section and parade. Well over 300 interactive educational exhibits, guided tours and demonstrations will showcase how agricultural researchers and educators are addressing important issues, safeguarding and improving our food supply and the environment, and helping to enhance the efficiency and profitability of agriculture and its related industries. We owe our continued success to the hard work and dedication of many, but most especially to our farmers and the agricultural community. You are why we do what we do and we wouldn't be here without you. So come join the fun and fellowship and leave with a renewed sense of community and confidence in our future as the agricultural leader of the world. The Expo is located on Georgia Hwy. 133 southeast of Moultrie. The gates open at 8:30 a.m. each day of the show and close at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 4 p.m. on Thursday. Big Boy tomatoes grow tall in Ivy, Ga. It's not often one has to climb a ladder to harvest a crop of tomatoes, but that's exactly what Billy Wilkes of Ivy, Ga., had to do this summer to pick his Big Boy tomatoes. "We raised them from seed," said Corine Wilkes, Billy's wife. "We put them out probably in April." From there, the plants took off, growing taller than Billy himself. The 35 plants were staked with 4-foot concrete wire and cabled to posts at either end of the tomato patch. "They were so good," Corine Wilkes says of the tomatoes. Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 30, 2015 farmers and consumers market Bulletin 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.govPage 7 Arty's Garden: American beautyberry lives up to its name American beautyberry has fruits as showy as any flower. Select the American species, not one from China or Japan. By Arty Schronce American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is one of the most unusual and attractive berry-bearing shrubs we can grow. The berries are a striking shade of bright purple and are clustered around the stems at the axils of the leaves. No other native shrub is like it. Its clumps of colorful berries up and down its stems in late summer and fall are an unforgettable sight. It does have flowers, pinkish lavender things that are modestly attractive but not showy by any definition. Remember, it's all about the berries, and the name says it all: beauty + berry. There are Asian species of beautyberries, but I avoid them. Why bring in exotic species that may become invasive when we have a fine and, in my view, superior Georgia native to incorporate into our gardens? If your local garden center does not have American beautyberry in stock, they may be able to order it for you. If you do not find it for sale, American beautyberry is easy to grow from softwood cuttings in summer or fall and from seeds. Gather seeds after the first frost and go ahead and sow them outdoors or save them to sow in the spring. It is easy to start from seed and a fairly rapid grower. In the landscape American beautyberry can be massed (several planted together in a group) or used with perennials or other large shrubs. It is especially effective with native asters, goldenrods, swamp sunflower, wax mallow, canna and ornamental grasses. Good shrub companions include pomegranate, titi, buttonbush, groundsel bush, abelia, althea, Southern waxmyrtle, kerria and butterfly rose. The berries are relished by many birds 40 species according to some sources, including our state bird, the brown thrasher. This makes American beautyberry an ideal choice for a bird-lover's garden. I have used the berried stems in many flower arrangements. They are attractive by themselves or mixed with goldenrod, cutleaf coneflower, garden phlox, showy sedum, blue mist flower and red spider lily. I usually clip off the leaves when combining the branches with flowers or leave them on when arranging the branches in a vase by themselves. There is also a white-berried form of American beautyberry that should please those who are not fond of vivid purples in the garden or in bouquets. Arty Schronce is the department's resident gardening expert. He's a life- long gardener and a horticulture gradu- ate of North Carolina State University who encourages everyone to discover the pleasures of plants, including berried treasures such as American beautyberry. Their recipe for Good Enough Shrimp and Grits with Candied Bacon included their Georgia Apple Cider Pepper Spread and four Suzy and Clark Neal other Georgia Grown ingredients. "We were proud to be represent- ing Georgia Grown and we featured several of our fellow Georgia Grown companies in our winning recipe," said Clark Neal Jr. Other Georgia Grown featured companies and ingredients included Signet wine from Habersham Winery; peanut oil from Oliver Farms; butter and cream from Mountain Fresh Creamery; and, of course, Georgia Apple Cider Pepper Spread from Unicoi Preserves. This is the second award Unicoi Preserves has received for their Apple Cider Pepper Spread. Earlier this year, they were awarded as a finalist at the Flavor of Georgia, an annual food contest hosted by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with the support of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Unicoi Preserves products are the Neals' home recipes, made by hand in small batches. Using locally sourced fruit grown in their mountain region and picked at the peak of ripeness allows all varieties of their products to be flavorful and low in sugar with no artificial ingredients. Good Enough Shrimp & Grits with Candied Bacon Grits An original recipe by Unicoi Preserves, Sautee, Ga. Ingredients: 2 cups Nora Mill Stone Ground Grits 7 cups water 1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 cups Mountain Fresh Creamery Cream 1 stick (8 Tbsps.) unsalted butter 2 cups Cabot Extra Sharp Cheddar, grated Preparation: Combine water, salt, cream and butter in stockpot, stirring in grits over high heat. Stir constantly until boiling to prevent grits from clumping. Lower heat to simmer, cover with lid, stirring occasionally for approximately 30 minutes, adding water if they get too thick. Stir in cheese, cover and keep grits warm over low heat. Candied Bacon Ingredients: 1 lbs. Wright's Thick Cut bacon, diced into approx. inch pieces Preparation: Cook over medium heat until browned, drain off grease, return bacon to pan. Add 9 oz. jar Unicoi Preserves Apple Cider Pepper Spread to bacon. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, reducing the liquid until almost evaporated. Remove candied bacon from pan to a Silpat or parchment paper. Spread out to cool. Shrimp Ingredients: 3 lbs. Georgia Wild Caught Shrimp Kosher salt & black pepper to taste Preparation: Peel and de-vein shrimp. Rinse and pat dry. Season lightly with kosher salt and black pepper. Heat 2 Tbsps. unsalted butter and 2 Tbsps. Oliver Farm Peanut Oilin a skillet over medium high heat. Add shrimp to hot pan in batches; don't crowd the pan!Sear one minute per side and remove shrimp from pan. Pan Sauce Add 1 cups Habersham Vineyard Signet Wine, turn up heat, add lb. Mountain Fresh Creamery Butter and cook for 5 -7 minutes, reducing sauce slightly. Taste for salt and adjust if necessary. Return shrimp to pan, toss to coat shrimp and cook over medium heat, approx. 2 minutes. To serve: Ladle grits into bowl, top with shrimp, pan sauce, candied bacon and chopped chives. Lancaster travels middle and South Georgia teaching egg candling and grading to backyard flock owners who sell eggs from their flocks directly to the end user. "Anybody who sells eggs in the state of Georgia has to have a candling license," Lancaster explained. Candling uses a bright light source held close to the egg to determine the condition inside the shell of the air cell, yolk and white of the egg. Classes are taught throughout the year all over the state, and last anywhere from two to four hours. Lancaster said he sees anywhere from 20 to 60 students per session. "Most people have between 20 and 50 chickens. They won't be producing but maybe 20 dozen eggs a week and most will be selling them at their community farmers market," Lancaster said. "I don't try to take microbiologists out of people. I just give them the basics." Check the department's online agriculture calendar at agr.georgia.gov for a schedule of upcoming Egg Candling classes statewide. Classes are co-sponsored by the University of Georgia Agricultural Extension Service. -Photos by Sharon Dowdy/UGA News Service Egg Candling Inspector Lee Lancaster, at right, demonstrates candling technique during a class Sept. 3 in Spalding County.
