In 2012, Georgia exported roughly $3.7 billion in products to China. A significant portion of that was agricultural products food, fiber, forestry and various byproducts. "When you think of the amount of people they have to feed in those areas of the country and you get to see it, it really becomes real to you what a great opportunity we have in Georgia agriculture to be able to trade some of our commodities over there," said Zippy Duvall, Georgia Farm Bureau president. Gov. Nathan Deal and the state Department of Economic Development invited Duvall, Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black and other agriculturalists on the state's largest, most diverse trade mission in September, visiting several cities in China and Tokyo, Japan. In China, the group opened the new state office in Qingdao and held trade meetings in Jinan, the economic city and capitol city, respectively, in the Shandong province. A highlight of the Tokyo visit was a completely Georgia Grown supper, a meal collaboration between the chef at the Governor's Mansion and the Japanese counterparts. The audience at that dinner represented more than 400 Japanese companies with operations in Georgia, ranging in size from Toyota all the way to entrepreneur Bentley's Biscuits, a pet bakery based in Savannah with plans to expand into the Asian market. The agricultural delegation was able to meet with representatives from a number of companies, including Kubota and a feed supplement company building a plant in Peachtree City, Ga. Other agricultural meetings centered on trade issues and how the Department and producers can ensure quality products make it overseas. "What we did was try to ensure them first of all to make sure they're dealing with licensed and bonded people in the state and people with good reputations," Black said. "We tried to urge them to let us know if they have any particular problems, and also just causing us to review the whole federal-state inspection protocols [for crops in question]. Whatever's sold in Georgia on a contract has got to be the product that is unloaded in the ports of China." He said if there are any differences in what's sold and what arrives, the discrepancy could damage the integrity of Georgia-produced products. "We're trying to build a brand integrity of the See TRADE, page 7 Georgia's agricultural delegation to China and Japan this month included, from left, Department of Agriculture's Director of Business Development Bo Warren, Lydia Black, Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. For one week this school year, each of these five schools will provide 75 to 100 percent of its lunch food from Georgia farmers, giving hundreds of students a glimpse into where their food comes from before it hits the lunch line. The program is part of the "Feed My School for a Week" grants provided by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and Department of Education. "Many children cannot tell you where corn comes from. They will tell you a can. And it's like, no, this is corn," said Jacqueline Dennerlein, lead gifted facilitator and garden coordinator for West Chatham Elementary in Savannah, Ga. "The looks on their faces `Like from the seeds that we plant?' yes, this is really what corn looks like." West Chatham, along with Southside Elementary in Cairo, Sharon Elementary in Suwanee, Skyview Elementary in Lizella and Colbert Elementary in Colbert, will offer opportunities to taste Georgiagrown food, learn about farming straight from the farmer and collaborate agriculture education with existing curricula. "It was the direction we were already heading, bringing a much more inquiry-based, hands-on learning," said Amy Bartlett, Sharon Elementary principal. "This `Feed My School' piece was just such a natural intersection." At Sharon Elementary, students will kick off their agriculture education on Sept. 20, though their official "Feed My School" week is in April. A farmer from United Egg Producers is scheduled to come speak and students will have a taste test of some Georgia foods. Each See SCHOOL, page 12 Mail to: Published by the Ga. The fair highlights some of Georgia's greatest assets: our youth and agriculture. During the 11-day event, you will experience every facet of the fair; horse and livestock shows, youth competitions, Georgia Living exhib- its and contests, food, rides, circus, MOORE vendors, family entertainment, concerts and nightly fireworks. The new Georgia Grown building highlights Georgia's diverse agricultural industry by showcasing its products, ser- vices and education. Fairgoers will learn why agriculture is the state's No. 1 industry. The Georgia Grown Pavilion sells unique Georgia-made products such as jams and jellies, nuts, baked goods, sauces and relishes. The third annual Legislative Livestock Showdown, Oct. 5, pairs Georgia House and Senate legislators with an experienced 4-H or FFA livestock show participant as their "teacher." Dressed in their special showmanship shirts, the legislators go through the process of preparing an animal for the show ring. In the showmanship class, the judging process focuses on how they handle the heifer. The first-place winner receives 10 points; the 10th place winner, one point. Scores are tallied and the winning team will be presented with the Showdown Trophy. The House has won the trophy the past two years. Reaves Arena concerts include Hunter Hayes with Love and Theft, Oct. 5; Justin Moore and Thompson Square, Oct. 12. All seats are reserved and on sale at www.georgianationalfair.com. The Georgia National Fair is special and unique. It's the perfect time and place for families and friends to gather and have fun. We encourage you to visit the many educational aspects of the fair. We also encourage you to participate in the fair. It's a sense of great pride to win a blue ribbon at the Georgia National Fair. The Georgia Agricultural Exposition Authority and staff hope you enjoy everything the fair has to offer. From Georgia's outstanding youth and top livestock to the lights and sounds of the entertainment and rides, the Georgia National Fair is magical! The Georgia National Fair has won many awards and honors, but nothing gives us more pleasure than knowing you and your family and friends are having a great time. Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 18, 2013 agriculture Letter from the Editor I like to say I'm passionate about two things in life: our food and how it gets on our plates. But that's only a partial truth, because I'm passionate about a third thing Saturdays in the fall. College football Saturdays in the fall, to be exact. These are the best days. There's just something about waking up at the crack of dawn, ready to take on the world (or LSU, they're almost the same thing) with tens of thousands of your closest friends squeezing into stadium seats, into the back of a pickup and in the lanes of traffic on the way into campus. My allegiances are to the U-S-of-A and to the G-E-O-RG-I-A (did anyone else chant that gameday style just now?), and Saturdays in the fall make my heart soar. I know not everyone is a football fan, but for those who are, y'all know all of the emotions that come with these Saturdays. First, you're either going to fall over from heat exhaustion because it's roughly a zillion degrees outside and sunny, or freeze because you're sitting on the shady side of the stadium in shorts and a T-shirt. Then there are the game emotions. The incomplete passes of your team, the echoing of fans screaming for the running back about to dive in the end zone; the scowls you send the way of freshmen who cheer when your team is on offense; the heartbreak when your team loses by less than a touchdown; the "great game" high-fives you give strangers after a win. But whether you're a fan of football or not, there's one fall Saturday tradition that beats them all, and that is tailgating. Even if you don't know Todd Gurley from Keith Marshall, there's a pretty good chance you love good food, right? And there is just nothing like the good food prepared for a tailgate. There are hamburgers, hotdogs, pasta salads, sausage dogs, spicy wings, brownies, chips and dip and the list goes on. If it's an early kickoff, someone's gone to grab a platter of those little chicken mini things, and the beverages are a bit more breakfast-friendly. If it's a late game, there might be some snack food thrown into the mix. The options are endless. And the best thing about tailgating? As long as you've got team spirit, an empty belly and maybe a pickup truck, you can tailgate anywhere. In fact, in some ways, your driveway is the best spot to tailgate, especially if you can't make it to the game. Your driveway is closer to your kitchen, which means you can cook up family favorite recipes and not have to worry about how to get them to campus or "what happens if we take the pasta salad out of the cooler too soon and it gets hot." I'm not going to make it to many games this season, so I have a feeling most of the matchups I'll be watching from the comfort of someone's couch in close proximity to a kitchen, where we can rustle up some amazing "Let the Big Dawg Eat" tailgate vittles. Our Auburn fan home economist has an inspirational recipe in this issue that can be made to take to campus or made to eat in the yard, depending on your tailgate preferences. Writing this makes me hungry. I'm hungry for tailgate food and hungry for a winning season. Glory, glory ... go tailgates and GO DAWGS. Dallas Duncan is the editor of the Market Bulletin. How to keep tailgate food safe to serve on game day GRILLING TEMPERATURE GUIDELINES By Jessica Badour, Food Safety Division As we bid summer farewell and fall quietly enters in, it can only mean one thing ... It's time for football season. Regardless of which team you root for, there's bound to be plans for a tailgate in your future. Planning the next tailgate is the key to keeping food safe and properly prepared for family and guests. Food for tailgating parties requires the same kind of safe handling practices as when you're picnicking outdoors. Here's a general checklist of what to bring along: 4 Coolers with ice or frozen gel packs to keep cold foods cold. Remember to keep raw meats in a separate cooler or container to prevent cross-contamination. Keep all food in the cooler at 41 degrees Fahrenheit. 4 Grill, fuel and plenty of clean utensils and platters for cooking and serving. Don't cross-contaminate raw and cooked foods for example, never reuse the raw meat tray for cooked food unless it's been thoroughly washed. 4 A food safety thermometer, to ensure meat and poultry reach proper internal cooking temperatures (see guide). 4 Water, soap and paper towels for washing hands, surfaces and utensils. 4 A timer. Generally, food can be left out at room tempera- ture for about two hours before bacteria begin to multiply. Set your timer for two hours from the time you put out hot food such as chicken wings or perishable cold food like potato salad. 4 Insulated containers to keep hot foods hot. You can also cook hot foods at home, chill them to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and bring them on ice, then reheat them on the grill. When grilling marinated chicken, reserve a side portion of the marinate for basting before placing the raw chicken in, and always marinate meat in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Transport the marinated meat and reserve marinade in the cooler and keep it cold until the grill is fired up. Don't partially cook food in advance. Either cook it fully or wait to cook it on-site, because partial cooking can allow harmful bacteria to survive and multiply. Try not to cook more than the tailgaters are going to eat, to help avoid the challenge of keeping leftovers at a safe temperature. If any perishable leftovers are left out for longer than two hours or one hour if the temperature is 90 degrees or higher throw them out. Now that you're armed with safe tailgating tips ... who's ready for kick off? TRADE: Relationships key to Georgia Grown brand overseas Georgia Grown logo. We want them to trust that Georgia Grown logo and we're going to defend it," he said. The Department's partnership with the Department of Economic Development and its new office in Qingdao gives Georgia agriculture opportunities to promote the Georgia Grown brand, said Bo Warren, director of business development for the Department of Agriculture. "I think a small few probably recognize that Georgia Grown logo, but we still have more to do in promoting that," he said. "The Chinese community, if they buy a product, they want to know that it's endorsed or backed by someone. If they see a product that's a Kraft brand, then they know the Kraft corporation is behind that and that gives them a certain amount of security to buy that prod- From Page 1 uct. What we hope with the Georgia Grown logo, they'll know it comes from Georgia and they know it's the highest quality." Black said the meetings led to favorable discussions of using a wide array of Georgia Grown products in international hotels. InterContinental Hotels, based in Atlanta and with locations overseas, could be a starting point, he said. "One of the ways to penetrate the market would be just to start with InterContinental properties in the foodservice business. I think the interest is genuine," Black said. Black believes China's biggest demands will be pecans, peanuts, cotton and poultry. He hopes to draw more Chinese visitors to Georgia through agritourism. "There's a specific market for them to come and do the farm tour thing. They are really interested in that," he said. "We're going to be working with the Department of Economic Development to see if we can put on some of those relationship-building opportunities." One such opportunity is the possibility for a joint food safety summit. "The Chinese consumer is deeply concerned about food safety," Black said. "I posed to them and they liked to start hyperventilating what if we did an annual food safety summit with marketing and academia and regulatory, and we had it here one year and in Qingdao the next year? ... There good be some real synergy there. That helps you build the trust that can help you build the marketplace there, too." page 8 farmers and consumers market Bulletin Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 18, 2013 ADGA four nice Nubian does and three Registered Oberhashli stud goat, age Regd. Morehead joined Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black, UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Dean Scott Angle and legislators on a farm tour with stops across the Peach State. "[Commissioner Black] offered to take me across the state if I had any interest in visiting a number of farming communities," Morehead said. "I told him I thought it was a great idea. ... I've obviously visited individual farms before, but this is the first time I've been on a tour that went to so many different destinations." Stops included the UGA Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center in Lyons, Lewis Taylor Farms in Tifton, the Sunbelt Expo site in Moultrie, the Calhoun Bull Test Station in Rome, Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge and Fieldale Farms' poultry plant and corporate offices in Cornelia and Baldwin. In addition, there were stops in the Bainbridge area Dollar Farm Products, American Peanut Growers Group, Southeastern Minerals and John Bridges Farm. "One of the big things that we were trying to emphasize was the importance of the Extension and research arm of the University of Georgia in providing the necessary information to those of us that are growers or trying to be entrepreneurs, so that we can make good business decisions," said Tim Mercier, president of Mercier Orchards. Josh White, executive vice president of Georgia Cattlemen's Association, echoed his sentiments. At the Rome stop, Morehead got a glimpse into the daily life of a Georgia beef cattle producer, many of whom have diversified operations and utilize the marketing and research from the Calhoun station on their farm. Tommy Dollar, chief executive officer of Dollar Farm Products, said he hopes Morehead gleaned an understanding of the economic benefits agriculture has in south Georgia. "We have been told that agriculture receipts that farmers received from their crop turns six to seven times locally, which is the economy of Decatur and Seminole counties," Dollar said. Morehead got a special surprise at Fieldale Farms a group of UGA graduates donned their red and black to welcome him. "That was kind of neat, just to show the impact the institution has on their human resources, not just their research," said Mike Giles, president of Georgia Poultry Federation. "We knew that he knew the importance of agriculture, but he was eager to learn more and because UGA is a land grant college, he knows the university is important for the success of Georgia's largest sector of our economy, which is agriculture. But until you have the opportunity to show them firsthand how we operate ... there's really no substitute for that. A picture's worth a thousand words. Perhaps a tour may be even worth more than a picture." Morehead said he gained a "renewed appreciation" for the industry, and anticipates similar events on "a fairly consistent basis." Tour participants said they were pleased Morehead was eager to learn about their specific industries. "We were pleased that Dr. Morehead wanted to tour and learn more about agriculture so early in his tenure," Giles said. "It says a lot about the importance that he places on the agricultural community and its impact in Georgia and role in the university. As busy as his schedule is, to carve out two full days to tour farms ... makes a huge statement in our mind." UGA President Jere Morehead, left, and Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Photo by Mary Kathryn Yearta SCHOOL: Lunches to contain majority Georgia-grown food From Page 1 month this school year, Sharon's teachers will incorporate agriculture into the curriculum with activities including art contests, science experiments and even a school farmers market, said fifth-grade parent Christine Murphy. In addition, the cafeteria will highlight a fruit or vegetable each month with a trivia contest and taste test, nutrition director Dee Mathis said. The garden at West Chatham includes a sensory garden geared toward children with disabilities and planting beds for each grade level. In addition, students engage in math lessons by planning the area of the school chicken coop and fruit tree orchard, and science standards by discussing soil samples. Colbert Elementary will incorporate agriculture through field trips and an essay contest on agriculture in Madison County. "We'll furnish a few topics like, what is Madison County agriculture? What grows in Madison County?" Principal Sandra Seymour said. "I'm interested to see the writing students produce from that. That is a piece teachers can grade, but it can also help us to gauge what learning has been taking place." Georgia-grown menu items at Southside will include Vidalia onions, bread products, grits, blueberry juice, vegetables and more, all that will fit within the US Department of Agriculture nutrition guidelines for school meals, Grady County Nutrition Director Rhonda Keve said. "We're going to have a cheeseburger bar; apple salad ... black eyed peas with chow-chow, that's going to be a new, different thing," Seymour said. "All of the products that are going to be used for the lunches and breakfast, they'll tag the [lunch] line with what farm they came from and where in Georgia." Dennerlein said it was a "total surprise" to find out West Chatham was awarded the grant. "They're here for a week and they involve local farmers, but I want them to take the healthy habits for a lifetime," Dennerlein said. "It's really about healthy nutrition and learning to eat better. ... For us here at this school, I'm a firm believer in that farm-to-school should be more than a week. It should be year-round." Southside Principal Janet Walden is excited about the possibilities as well. "We're just honored to have it," Walden said. "I think it's going to be a great opportunity for our students to make their learning come alive." Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 18, 2013 VISIT WITH A VET: BVD Testing at the Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories Visit with a Georgia veterinarian in this monthly feature. This edition comes from Drs. Lee Jones, Roberto Palomares, Sree Rajeev, Susan Sanchez, Murray Hines and Jeremiah Saliki of the diagnostic laboratories in Athens and Tifton. BVD one complex disease, one simple sample, one simple strategy! Bovine viral diarrhea is a significant cause of economic losses to the cattle industry. Clinical signs include reproductive failure, respiratory disease or diarrhea. About 70 percent of infected cattle don't become sick, but are susceptible to other diseases. Moreover, some animals showing no symptoms are dangerous to the herd as they can be virus carriers, also known as persistently infected animals, or PIs. PIs are calves infected with certain non-cytopathic strains of BVD in the womb. Although many infected calves die or are culled within six months, some grow into adults. These shed large amounts of the virus in secretions such as saliva, feces, urine and milk throughout their lives, exposing the herd to BVD. PIs can transmit BVD by direct contact, such as noseto-nose, or through contaminated veterinary equipment, farm equipment or facilities. To manage BVD, vaccinate all dairy calves at 2 to 3 months old and all beef calves at 4 to 5 months. Add biosecurity procedures to prevent introduction of the disease isolate and confirm that new animals are BVD-negative; bio-containment to interrupt virus spread; and laboratory testing of samples for BVD presence. To diagnose a disease such as BVD in an animal or herd, laboratory testing is required. The same is true for wholeherd screening as part of a herd health program. Diagnosis When an animal is sick, it is recommended to take eight milliliters of whole blood in EDTA, a combination of a specific acid and a colorless, water-soluble solid typically placed in a purple-topped tube for veterinary purposes. In the case of abortion or death, it is recommended to take samples of lung, spleen, lymph nodes, kidney or the entire fetus. Herd screening or animal marketing: To test the herd for PI screening, or to market an animal after confirming it is not BVD-PI, it is recommended to take one ear-notch sample in a screw-capped tube or blood in a red-topped tube. When BVD-free bred heifers are purchased, it is still necessary to test the calf after birth to ensure BVD won't be accidentally introduced. Diagnostic labs can pool up to 24 ear-notch or blood samples and run one test, called a PCR, to reduce costs per animal, with a turnaround time of two to three business days. If any pool is positive, all members of that pool will be re-tested for BVD using the Antigen Capture ELISA test. This individual animal testing may present an additional cost and turnaround time, but will identify and allow removal of PIs. To contact the diagnostic labs, call 706-542-5568 for Ath- ens, 229-386-3340 for Tifton or visit www.vet.uga.edu/dlab. Table 1: Testing strategy for PIs.
