Meet Georgia's new 4-H officers The Roundup, Page 11 GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE GARY W. BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2013 VOL. 96, NO. 16 Watermelon queen puts spotlight on Georgia summer fruit Carol Anne Mitchell was crowned Georgia Watermelon Queen at the Georgia Watermelon Association convention earlier this year. Photo courtesy Sunny Lee Photography By Dallas Duncan These days, Carol Anne Mitchell's wardrobe staples include a sparkling crown and sash. That's because the 22-year-old University of Georgia alumna is the state's 2013 Watermelon Queen. "While the title is `Watermelon Queen,' she's really a public relations ambassador," said Charles Hall, executive director for Georgia Watermelon Association. "Just like any other public relations [campaign], we're trying to bring focus onto the overall industry and the need for moving the product forward." Mitchell has attended numerous events as the face of GWA, including a July Braves game. Her travels so far took her to cities across Georgia, Newfoundland and Canada. "They treated me like a celebrity while I was [in Newfoundland]," Mitchell said. "We went around to four different stores. They had the most ridiculous watermelon displays. They had a tractor inside the store and watermelon bins around it and then a poster with my face on it ... there were little girls asking for my autograph." Most of the events she attends focus on sharing information about the crop with consumers. She hands out samples, discusses nutritional ben- efits and demonstrates how to pick the perfect watermelon. The Georgia Watermelon Queen is selected each year at the GWA convention. "The selection process is certainly not like a beauty pageant-type process," Hall said. "They're selected based on their ability to communicate and personality on being able to talk about the industry." The association encourages collegiate women to apply for the weekend-long contest. The grandprize winner gets a $5,000 scholarship. At the end of her one-year commitment, she competes against several other states' queens for the national title, said Samantha Tankersley, GWA promotions coordinator. Because the demand to have the queen at events is so high, the first and second runners up get to attend promotions as well. This year, those are Jennifer Eadie of Sylvester, Ga., and Carla Penney of Vienna, Ga. Tankersley said consumers know watermelon is a healthy food, but having Mitchell or one of the contest runners-up at events and grocery stores makes them pay a little extra attention to the commodity and to the produce section as a whole. Hundreds of visitors and several media outlets turned out for the Georgia Grown Farmers Showcase, which many hailed as the best yet of such events. "There was a lot more people, a lot more interaction," said Lynn Batchelor of Wally Bees Honey. "They do a good job. We've been here in the good and the bad, but this was the best." The Newnan-based company had only a few jars of local honey beeswax candles by the end of the day. Southern Press and Packing, a Blackshear, Ga., company specializing in 100 percent blueberry juice, brought 31 cases of product and sold all but one. Black, Commissioner GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: AgSouth Farm Credit Lending financing, support for Georgia growers By Morgan Smith In 1916, AgSouth Farm Credit was established to provide financing for farmers, so if there is one thing they know, it's agriculture. With more than 7,000 members and borrowers across 26 different locations in Georgia and South Carolina, AgSouth reaches out to farmers across the Southeast. Although the headquarters are located in Statesboro, Ga., AgSouth tries to reach as many farmers as it can, serving 29 counties in Georgia. "We are a customer-owned cooperative and as such, we share our profits with our customers in the form of patronage dividends," said Christy Smith, AgSouth's regional marketing manager. "AgSouth is a lender who truly understands agriculture and the way of life for farmers." AgSouth became a Georgia Grown member in 2012. "We joined Georgia Grown because it supports and represents Georgia farmers, who are also our members and customers. It's a tremendous resource for educating the public on the benefits of locally grown food as well," Smith said. AgSouth is a proud supporter of the Georgia farmer, and hopes to continue that support through Georgia Grown. "As members of this great organization, we hope to develop a closer relationship with the Department of Agriculture in our joint efforts to support and promote our local farmers," Smith said. Another way AgSouth is reaching out to Georgia farmers is through its AGAware programs. "The purpose of this program is to promote and educate the next generation of farmers," Smith said. These free, educational finance workshops are offered twice a year for young, beginning, small and minority farmers. Covering areas including basic budgeting to the benefits of joining Georgia Grown, AGAware is a huge asset to local farmers. "Georgia has some of the best farmers and top of the line agriculture in the nation. It is imperative that we as consumers continue to support them. The general public needs to be aware of this huge industry and the benefits of higher quality, locally grown food. Georgia Grown allows us to do just that," Smith said. What do you think the most common misconceptions are about farming and animal welfare? Most people today are several generations removed from the farm and do not understand what is required to provide good food for the table. They are trying to compare what happens in an apartment patio or a small backyard garden to production farming. They do not understand their dog that they treat as a member of the family cannot be compared to a herd of cows or pigs. If they were able to spend some time on a working farm, a lot of the issues of today revolving around animal welfare and food costs could be resolved. 2. What are some things the Department does to ensure all livestock, poultry and companion animals are treated properly by owners and caretakers? The Department has numerous inspectors that regularly visit all licensed facilities and respond to complaints. Workingwithlocallawenforcementandani- mal control, they are responsible for ensuring animals are treated humanely and that STATE VETERINARIAN DR. ROBERT COBB current law and rules are followed. The Department inspectors monitor livestock markets and inspect animals at shows and exhibitions. 3. What should consumers do if they suspect a producer is treating animals improperly? They should contact their local sheriff's or animal control office. Also, they may contact the Department's Ani- mal Health Division at 404-656-3667 or the State Veterinarian's office at 404-656-3671. 4. How can farmers prevent their employees from mistreating animals? Farmers as well as their employees that handle animals should get training in animal handling. Certifications such as Beef Quality Assurance, Pork Quality Assurance and The National Dairy FARM Program are great programs to ensure that good animal handling is followed. These programs are beneficial to the animals, but they can help to increase production which benefits the farmer. In addition, the National Chicken Council has standards for their farmers and trains third-party auditors on these standards. For more information, contact Georgia Cattlemen's Association, Georgia Milk Producers, National Chicken Council or University of Georgia Extension Service. 5. If producers or farm workers are found to be mistreating animals, how is that situation handled? Cruelty to animals is punishable by law. The sheriff's office can press charges. If the facility is licensed by the Department, the license can be suspended or revoked and administrative hearings could result in fines. GUEST COLUMN: A Lesson from the Farm Growing up on a north Georgia cattle farm in Rock Spring, I learned a lot of lessons. I learned you can check an electric fence with a long grass blade. I learned how to drive a manual transmission way before I should've actually been driving. And I learned what being a neighbor really means. One of the biggest lessons I learned came while I was driving this old, red International tractor in the hayfield. I realized that if I kept looking forward, I had no idea where I had been and how the hay looked behind me. But if I always looked behind, happy with the windrows I had made, I had no idea where I was going. So, I had to constantly balance checking the work I had done with planning on where I was going. Now that I am working on the "other side" of agriculture at Destiny Organics, I can look back at the lessons I learned on the farm and help advise farmers on their day-to-day routines. But I also have to help them to keep looking ahead. I must balance the lessons from yesterday with goals for tomorrow. We live in a great state for agriculture and the farmers here are competing globally ... and winning. Let's continue to support Georgia Grown farmers and producers. By doing so, we are consuming some of the best products in the nation and world, growing our economy, and securing our future. Some lessons learned on the farm were harder than others ... and some I didn't want to learn at all ... but most of them I will never forget. Benjamin Pruett is the communications director for Destiny Organics, located at the Atlanta State Farmers Market. Destiny Organics specializes in bringing Georgia Grown farmers and producers to market. CORRECTION W.G. Hamil pecans: a family business from the beginning Editor's Note: Due to reporter error, the Georgia Grown member profile published on June 12, 2013, contained incorrect information. The corrected story runs below. W.G. Hamil began in 2007. From the very beginning, W.G. Hamil has always been a family business and prides itself in maintaining two core values: honesty and integrity. "When a customer calls on us they always get to speak with a Hamil. Whether they're calling about one pound or a million pounds of pecans, we treat every customer like they are important. Because they are," said Michael Hamil, owner Greg Hamil's son and pecan buyer. Whether you're in the mood for some southern pecans or fresh watermelon, W.G. Hamil has what you need. Online or in its store in Thomasville, Ga., you'll find all sorts of Southern treats. From local to worldwide markets, W.G. Hamil ships pecans domestically and internationally. The much-needed "middle man" for the pecan industry, they work from their Thomasville location as well as other packing facilities. Since joining the Georgia Grown program in 2012, W.G. Hamil has been a proud supporter of Georgia agriculture. "We're proud to have the support of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, and we're proud to stand behind them," Hamil said. Pecans are one of Georgia's top products and exports. "They're important to the state's economy, just as the entire field of agriculture is," Hamil said. agriCULTURE By Dallas Duncan I watch a lot of Food Network and Travel Channel on TV. One of my favorite shows is "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern," where the host travels the world looking for crazy, unusual foods. Chicken feet on a stick in China; guinea pig in Ecuador; artichoke gelato in Italy; and monkfish in Greece are just a few examples of things we would probably never think to try in the States, but are delicacies in other countries. And even foods we eat down South aren't safe from being "bizarre." In the most recent episode I caught, Zimmern was sampling low country boil. I had to do a second take what?! How is low country boil bizarre? What is so crazy about throwing corn, shrimp, potatoes, sausage and maybe some crab and seasoning in a pot and making a tasty stew out of these delicious ingredients? Then I got to thinking. There's a lot of food that's treated differently in different cultures. We drink sweet tea like it's our job south of the Mason-Dixon Line, yet up north this is foreign food. Bagels with lox smoked salmon and cream cheese are more common in New York for breakfast than grits. When I visited New Mexico last year, I had green chiles on just about everything I ate except for chocolate chip cookies ... but in Georgia I don't know that I've ever seen them on anything except a Mexican restaurant menu. In Georgia, ice in a cold glass of Coca-Cola is (in my Coke-addicted mind) a drink handed down from the gods. But if you visit England, you're liable to get a warm Coke with no ice and it's basically a travesty. My cousin Rachel recently experienced this difference in food culture on a trip to Spain in June. Now, during most of her trip she sampled offerings from the Spanish counterparts of Burger King and McDonald's. But on this one day, she saw tomato soup. Only upon eating it did she realize it was not at all what she thought first off, it was cold; second, it was sweet. Instead of tomato soup, it was gazpacho. Gazpacho is a dish eaten in several European countries, but it originated in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. Its ingredients can include tomatoes, peppers, garlic, cucumbers and basil, blended with a bread base. If you ask a European what gazpacho is, they'll probably tell you it's the best summer dish. This soup is best served chilled, and considering it blends some of summer's freshest, lightest and brightest flavors, it's no wonder folks across the ocean consider it as refreshing as I consider a cold Coke. I've never thought to eat cold soup because, again with a cultural difference in food treatment, I'm conditioned to think soup is a hot dish perfect for wintry days. "Cold soup" to me is "soup that's leftover in the fridge from last night." However, I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. Our Southern twist version of gazpacho is on page 7. It features all of the usual ingredients, but highlights one of Georgia's favorite summer fruits: watermelons! Garnished with crumbles of feta cheese and served with a flavor-complementing bruschetta on the side, I changed my mind about this "bizarre food." Who knows maybe tonight there's somebody in Madrid throwing spices in a pot of corn, shrimp, sausage and potatoes, making a Spanish version of low country boil for supper. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2013 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN PAGE 7 Georgia Farmer of the Year selected By Dallas Duncan There's a lot going on at White Oak Pastures in Bluffton, Ga. So much, in fact, that owner Will Harris was selected as the 2013 Georgia Farmer of the Year. "Will's very forward-thinking in the things he does," said Brian Cresswell, Early County Extension coordinator. "He knows what he's doing and why he's doing it. I thought he'd be a very strong candidate." Cresswell nominated Harris for the award, which is part of a regional competition. The southeastern winner will be announced at the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition in Moultrie, Ga., in October. Harris said he is honored and humbled at being selected the state winner. His family started the centennial farm in 1866. Harris farmed in the conventional manner for years, but said as he got older he chose to focus on the "old way." White Oak Pastures is the only farm in the country with both US Department of Agriculture-inspected red meat and poultry abattoirs. Harris' family raises 10 different meat animals as well as pastured eggs and certified organic vegetables. They built a restaurant on the farm and are looking to build lodging in 2014. "It is truly pasture to plate," Harris said. "Our agritourism is based on education more than recreation. ... We grow mushrooms, we tan leather hides, we can vegetables, we make jelly and jam and sausage and jerky and charcuterie. ... We do a lot of things that hopefully some people would want to learn about." Steve Brown, University of Georgia assistant dean for Extension, is in charge of the state award program. He said nominations come in from county agents across the state. "We want a farmer that's innovative, that tries new things. We're looking for engagement in the community and in commodity groups, people that are active in different commodity commissions and regional Farm Bureau groups and stuff like that," he said. "They need to ideally show some type of conservation for their farm and that they're taking care of the land. They need to show some sort of legacy plan what's going to happen to their land when they pass on." Brown said it was Harris' atypical farming practices in a very conventional ag-based community that stood out to the judges, as well as his ability to promote those products. "You gotta find a market for your products," Harris said. "You can't just hoof to it and pull it to the grain elevator or the auction barn or the cotton gin. You've got to find your market. And making production match demand you gotta raise enough, but you can't raise too much." White Oak Pasture products are sold at several Georgia grocery stores. In addition, food service distributors purchase the farm's meat and consumers can buy direct from the farm's online store. This is the 24th consecutive year the Southeastern Farmer of the Year award has been sponsored by Swisher Sweets. For being the Georgia winner, Harris' prizes included a $2,500 cash prize, an all-expenses paid trip to the Sunbelt Expo and several other items. The regional winner will win more prizes, including $15,000 cash. For future years, the state award has been merged with the Governor's Environmental Stewardship Award. Next March, Brown said the Georgia Farmer of the Year will be announced at Ag Day at the Capitol to compete at the Sunbelt Expo. Judges for the regional competition will visit White Oak Pastures later this month for the final judging. "Georgia is such a great farm state with so many great, great, great farmers," Harris said. "I don't think for one minute that I am the farmer of the year from Georgia, but somebody had to be and I'm glad they picked me." ARTY'S GARDEN: Crape myrtle, a gold medal plant for all seasons It has been 17 years since Atlanta hosted the Olympics, and I cannot remember any of the star athletes. But I do remember the horticultural star of the games crape myrtles. They were stunning as they are every summer with their large trusses of crinkled blossoms. In 1996, however, they had a large audience of visitors who had never seen them before. I remember being in a crowd downtown overhearing a woman from New Jersey asking, "Are those lilacs? They're beautiful!" Being the horticultural ambassador that I am, I stepped forward to tell her and her friends about them. A dignitary from Nigeria even came to the garden center where I worked to see if we had crape myrtle seeds he could take back to Africa. Drought or rainy weather, crape myrtles put on a beautiful floral display every summer. Those without discernment will say their flowers are pink, purple, red or white. But connoisseurs are apt to differentiate between pale pink, watermelon red, rose, plum, mauve, orchid, hot pink and crimson. If summer flowers were their only virtue, crape myrtles would still be garden stars. They are not just a one-season wonder, however. In the fall their leaves turn yellow, orange and red. Depending on the vari- ety, crape myrtles have smooth, even silky, exfoliating bark that ranges in color from peachy gray to cinnamon and is attractive all year. Crape myrtles need little except full sun. They will tolerate less but flowering is reduced and the plant is more prone to powdery mildew. Once established, they are drought tolerant. They require no special fertilizer, and really don't need any fertilizer. The biggest problem with crape myrtles is not a disease or an insect pest; it is people. Too many people butcher their crape myrtles and call it "pruning." They try to turn crape myrtle trees into crape myrtle shrubs. If crape myrtles are pruned correctly, you can't tell they have been pruned. Instead we see maimed crape myrtles with stubs of limbs from which long canes of new growth emerge. These canes are weak and more prone to aphids and powdery mildew. And the overall effect is ugly. You should prune to enhance the natural shape of the crape myrtle. You do not have to prune them to get them to bloom, and you do not have to massacre them just because your neighbor does. If you need a smaller crape myrtle, plant a dwarf variety. Some of these dwarf selections reach only a few feet tall. Southerners often bemoan what we cannot grow due to our heat. Many of us daydream of the garden paradises of England and the Pacific Northwest, where the weather is very temperate with abundant rainfall and almost everything thrives. But crape myrtles don't do well there. It's not hot enough. One of my best friends moved to Seattle in the 1990s. Besides being homesick for friends and family, he longed to see crape myrtles again. On a trip back to Georgia he told me, "The crape myrtles are taunting me." One final thing: is it crepe myrtle or crape myrtle? Actually, either spelling is acceptable. Crape is the dominant spelling in America, although many nursery catalogs and garden writers will describe the "crepelike flowers" of the crape myrtle. Go figure. Arty Schronce is the Department's resident gardening expert. He's a lifelong gardener and a horticulture graduate from North Carolina State University, and encourages everyone to take pleasure in their plants. FEATURED RECIPE: Georgia Grown watermelon gazpacho with cheesy bruschetta Editor's Note: The summery flavors in this Southern take on a traditional Spanish soup are perfectly complemented by the warm bruschetta one of my favorite things to make for parties and events. Ingredients: For the gazpacho, courtesy of Georgia Watermelon Association: 1 garlic clove, minced 3 pounds watermelon flesh, seeded and chunked 2 ripe tomatoes, cored and cut in wedges 2 tablespoons lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste 4 ounces crumbled feta cheese cup olive oil cup chopped fresh basil For the bruschetta: 1 baguette, cut into -inch thick slices 1 ball fresh mozzarella 3 roma tomatoes, diced Fresh basil leaves, chopped 3 tablespoons olive oil Balsamic vinegar Salt and pepper 1. Put the garlic, watermelon, tomatoes, lemon juice and some salt and pepper in a food processor. Add a few ice cubes one at a time and pulse until desired consistency chunky or smooth is reached. Chill in the refrigerator. 2. While gazpacho is chilling, prepare the bruschetta. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a bowl, combine tomatoes, basil, olive oil and salt and pepper. Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick spray. Put baguette slices on the sheet and top each slice with mozzarella. 3. Place baguette slices in the oven and heat until cheese is slightly melted. While cheese is melting, remove gazpacho from the refrigerator and ladle into bowls. Season with salt, pepper and additional lemon juice, if desired. 4. Remove baguettes from oven and top each slice with tomato and basil mixture. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar. 5. Just before serving, top each bowl of gazpacho with crumbled feta cheese, basil and a few drops of olive oil. MARKET: Plenty to pick from From Page 1 "I like the fact that I can come try local-sourced produce and things, and I can sample everything before I buy it," said John Stalvey, an attendee from Hapeville, Ga. "I just love seeing family farms trying to get out there and survive." Henry County Farm Bureau representative Jean Dykes said it was a great way to share their mission. "We do good to get one membership a day ... Here, we can talk to them and they can see our display and understand more what we're about and about our support of the farmers," Dykes said. "Once they understand and we have that opportunity to be in front of them, they're signing up. In two hours, we signed up seven." Be it the antique tractor display, the cow train or meeting the Georgia Watermelon Queen, the showcase had something for everyone, said Gary W. Black, Georgia commissioner of agriculture. "Vendors came from all across Georgia to mix and mingle with consumers as they sold their locally grown produce and goods," Black said. "I look forward to more Georgia Grown events of this kind that allow the rare opportunity for consumers to directly connect with the producer." Vendors are already planning their holiday-themed booths for the upcoming December event. "We didn't expect these kind of results. The crowd's great, it's fun," said Henry County Farm Bureau representative Ross McQueen. "It's working for us. We're planning on coming back, let me put it that way." But for some crops, increased precipitation meant increased disease susceptibility. One such disease is gummy stem blight, a fungal pathogen prone to infecting cucurbit plants such as watermelons. "We've seen above-average gummy stem blight because of the weather, but in most cases this did not get too severe," said David Langston, University of Georgia Extension vegetable pathologist. Symptoms of gummy stem blight include large, chocolate brown lesions on leaves. The lesions are irregularly shaped and have a concentric ring pattern inside. Eventually, the stem will get a brown, water-soaked lesion and defoliation can occur, he said. Jamey Adams, owner of Highmark Seed Company in Hahira, Ga., said gummy stem was worse than normal this year. "We've got some tools in the tool belt to manage gummy stem, but when Mother Nature turns loose all its wrath like it did this year, it's almost impossible to stop it completely," he said. Gummy stem blight can hit a field any time if conditions are right seedlings as well as full-grown watermelon plants can contract it, Langston said. In many cases, the disease is seed-borne, meaning producers don't know they've got the disease until their plants start to grow. "Most of the seeds are grown outside the country, so we bring in a lot of these seeds that were probably infested where the seed watermelons were produced," Langston said. He said because popular seedless watermelons are more labor-intensive and expensive to grow than seeded, it is difficult for many producers to use American-grown seeds. But since no resistance to gummy stem has been found in breeding lines, even if seeds were produced in the United States it would be difficult to keep the disease out of the seed, Langston said. Most major seed suppliers test for gummy stem blight through a grow-out test, which grows a seedling for six weeks and then analyzes it for several pathogens Adams said. The three keywords for producers in controlling this disease are rotate, rotate and rotate. Adams said it is recommended to do a three-year rotation on watermelon crops to prevent carryover from gummy stem blight and other diseases. "It's very difficult to manage this pathogen once it's established in the field," Langston said. "Once you see the symptoms a lot of times you're too late to be able to do anything." Preventative fungicide spraying is the primary way producers manage the disease. Adams said typically watermelon crops can be sprayed every two weeks, but this year some producers were spraying every three to seven days. "Growers rely pretty heavily on fungicide to control disease. The problem with reliance on fungicide is that this disease develops resistance to fungicide very rapidly. So you take out whole classes of chemicals that you use every time you get fungicide resistance," Langston said. It costs producers roughly $6 million a year to control gummy stem blight using a conservative fungicide schedule. "Georgia's watermelons are worth $180 million," Langston said. "Take 10 or 15 percent of that and that's just farmgate value and then you add to that how much you're paying for fungicide and it'd be around $20 million." Producers growing watermelons without the use of added fungicide face gummy stem blight as well. Because there are no organictype sprays that affect the disease, Langston advises planting a lot of diversity in a field to discourage disease spread between watermelon and other cucurbit plants. For example, a strip of watermelon would be next to a strip of tomatoes instead of two neighboring strips of watermelons. "I would also try to use drip-irrigation instead of overhead irrigation, because leaf wetness increases the favorability of gummy stem blight infection. If you could keep your foliage as dry as possible, it'll help reduce the risk of the disease," Langston said. He also advised growers to work with the plants when they're dry, not in the morning when dew is still on the ground. That's because the pycnidia the fruiting bodies of gummy stem blight that appear with the lesions produce spores in a gelatinous matrix that spreads through water splashing. "When those pycnidia produce spores, it looks like someone's squeezing toothpaste out of a tube," Langston said. "It comes out in a coil. And it's sticky. It really relies on moisture and sticking to wet things and being able to disperse in water." As long as the watermelons are mature when gummy stem blight hits, the fruit can QUEEN: Spotlight put on favorite summer fruit Georgia Watermelon Queen Carol Anne Mitchell hands out samples of watermelon at the Georgia Grown Farmers Showcase in Forest Park, Ga., on July 27. Photo by Dallas Duncan From Page 1 gram," Tankersley said. "[Consumers] may have a kid with them who gets excited they got a sticker from the Watermelon Queen and they say, `Mom, let's get a watermelon!' and then we've sold another watermelon for our industry." So far this year when the Watermelon Queen is at events, Tankersley said stores are reporting a 12 to 15 percent increase in sales from the previous year. "Carol Anne really has a passion for the industry. It's been a part of her family for a long time, so she understands the weight of the responsibility she has to essentially represent watermelon growers and their livelihood," Tankersley said. "She ... has a personality that makes you want to talk to her for a little bit longer." Mitchell continues to learn about the industry she grew up in, and is excited to share information about watermelons with consumers. For example, Mitchell said there are three steps to picking a watermelon: pick it up, look at it and turn it over. A heavier watermelon means more water content, which means consumers will feel fuller longer after eating it, she said. Watermelons should not be bruised or cut and the underside needs to have a golden belly. The more golden it is, the riper it is, meaning the meat of the watermelon is sweeter. "When it's more sweet it has a redder color on the inside and it has a larger amount of lycopene, which is good for your heart," Mitchell said. "It's the top product out of fruits and vegetables with lycopene in it." Like many Georgians, she said enjoying this healthy summer fruit is a staple of family events, be it a day at the lake or an Independence Day grill-out. "July 4 is the peak for watermelon season, and the price of watermelon is supposed to go down after that," Mitchell said. "I think in a typical year 80 percent of the watermelon has been harvested by July 4." But good news for watermelon lovers this season because of the rain, only 60 percent of the watermelon crop was harvested by July 4. "You can still go and eat watermelon through the end of August," she said. be sold for human consumption. Unlike the plant disease aflatoxin, gummy stem blight does not produce any toxins and will not affect people adversely. "It's just a fungus. It wouldn't be much different than eating any other mushroom, except with gummy stem it would be on a microscopic level," he said.
