(Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 12, 2013 Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Cattle farmers and ranchers work every day to produce great tasting beef that can fit a variety of tastes and lifestyles. The American Heart Association recently gave its seal of approval, the AHA Heart-Check Mark, to three beef cuts, bringing the total AHAapproved beef cuts to six. These cuts include USDA Select grade top sirloin filet, bottom round steak, sirloin tip steak, boneless top sirloin petite roast, top sirloin kabob and top sirloin stir fry. In addition, there are more than 30 beef options that fit USDA's definition of "lean," including favorites such as 95 percent lean ground beef, flank steak, strip steak and T-bone steak. These cuts offer delicious flavor and provide 10 percent or more of 10 essential nutrients, including protein, B vitamins, zinc and iron. Gov. Nathan Deal once again honored Georgia's cattle farmers and ranchers by declaring June as Georgia Beef Month. Join me in celebrating summer by throwing a steak or burger on the grill. After all, beef is what's for dinner ... and lunch, and probably breakfast, too. For more information about beef, the cattle community or to check out some great beef recipes, visit www.gabeef.org, www.beefitswhatsfordinner.com or follow Georgia Beef Board on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. Because of its perishable nature, it is important to insure that milk coming into the state from other sources remains fresh and of high quality and will maintain shelf life claims stated on packages of milk. Processed milk and milk products also undergo a phosphatase (enzyme) test to determine if they were properly pasteurized. If the pasteurization process was inadequate, the dairy lab notifies the Food Safety Division so that a product recall can be initiated. Fresh Georgia peaches are available mainly from mid-May to early August. When selecting peaches, it's a good idea to smell the fruit. The peach is a member of the rose family and should have a pleasingly sweet fragrance. Look for a creamy gold to yellow under-color. The red or "blush" of a peach is an indication of variety, not ripeness. Peaches should be soft to the touch, but not mushy. Look for a well-defined crease that runs from the stem to the point. Don't squeeze peaches because they bruise easily. Place firm peaches on the counter for a day or two and they'll ripen. Promptly refrigerate ripe peaches, and eat them within a week of purchase. The cabin renovation project at Rock Eagle 4-H Center got a significant push forward when Gov. Nathan Deal approved a $7.5 million earmark in the state's 2014 budget for replacement cabins at the Eatonton camp. "Seventeen new cabins will be constructed over the next two years thanks to funds appropriated for the project in the newly approved state budget," said Arch Smith, Georgia 4-H's state leader. The replacement cost for cabins at Rock Eagle is $500,000. This includes the cost of demolishing the existing cabin, adding new furnishings, site work, Okra: The South's Best-Kept Secret Okra has been a staple in Southern diets for generations, but now people everywhere are finding out what they've been missing. For years, okra has been a main ingredient at picnics, family reunions and dinners at home. Whether mixed in a gumbo, served with tomatoes, or fried, okra is a great-tasting southern specialty. Georgia's okra production is concentrated in the southern part of the state. Georgia offers an ideal climate for growing okra with its consistently warm and humid conditions. A Buyer's Guide to Okra Okra is the immature seed pod of the okra plant. Look for pods that are tender; tips should bend with very slight pressure. Pods should be under 4 1/2 inches long, bright green and free from blemishes and decay. Fresh okra bruises easily, so handle with care. If refrigerated, okra will keep for up to 10 days. To enjoy okra year-round, try freezing. To freeze, wash pods and remove stem ends. Blanch (scald in boiling water) for three to four minutes. Immerse in cold water for three minutes to halt the cooking process. Drain and package in freezer bags or containers, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Seal and freeze. One pound of okra yields four servings. Cook okra in aluminum, porcelain, earthenware or glass. The 4-H center has nine new cabins completed, two under construction and will begin construction on five more later this summer. The original cabins at the historic 4-H camp had two dormitory-style bedrooms that accommodated eight people on four bunk beds. Each summer more than 5,400 4-H'ers spend a week camping at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. The center houses an additional 50,000 youths and adults throughout the year for environmental education field studies, workshops, conferences and other meetings. Won't this smother the roots? Dig a deep hole and do as he said. The tomatoes will sprout roots along the stem which will help them take up water and nutrients, and the deeper, more expansive root system will help the plants better cope with dry conditions that may come in summer. *** Adding Mulch to Vegetable Plants What is this flower known as calibrachoa? It looks like a petunia. Increases Yields, Saves Water Calibrachoa (pronounced cal-ih-bruhCO-uh) is related to petunias. It is Adding mulch around vegetable plants like peppers, tomatoes, squash and eggplant can mean extra veggies at harvest time. Mulching prevents the loss of moisture from the soil, suppresses weed growth, cools the soil and keeps vegetables off the ground. Mulch serves as a barrier between the plant and the soil. This helps prevent fruit rot that sometimes occurs when control, and too much will prevent air from reaching the roots. However, leaves can form a soggy impenetrable mat. Mixing leaves with fluffy materials such as hay or straw and/or shredding the leaves can solve this problem. Bark mulches vary, but all are durable and suitable for mulching. Small pieces of bark are preferred over large chunks. Coffee grounds tend to cake badly, but sometimes called "million bells." It produces copious bell-like flowers that look like mini petunias. Calibrachoa prefers full sun and is good for pots and hanging baskets as well as borders. It may survive mild winters but is usually treated as an annual. Calibrachoa is relatively new and not as widely known as some other flowers. (Continued on Page 10) vegetables touch the ground. can be applied at a depth of one inch, so Adding mulch also reduces labor, since less cultivation is required. Emerging and small weeds won't survive under a bark barrier, reducing the need for tillage and the use of weed-control chemicals. roots can benefit from the nitrogen content. Compost is especially good as mulch because it has fertilizer value and a soillike appearance. It's also a good organic Riverside Market Seeks Vendors Mulch also conserves water by reducing evaporation of soil moisture. This lowers the soil temperature, too. Mulched soil also absorbs more water than unmulched soil. A layer of mulch also prevents the formation of soil crusts. Soil loss from heavy rain and wind also is decreased, making mulches excellent for conservation. Mulch improves root growth by acting as an excellent insulator, which prevents drastic changes in soil temperature. Mulch keeps the soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This increases nutrient availability and root growth. Adding mulch also makes the garden neater and reduces the amount of mudsplashed vegetables after heavy rains or amendment for tilling into the soil after the growing season ends. Newspaper is a readily available and economical mulch, but somewhat difficult to apply. A good use for newspaper is as an undermulch: place two to three sheets under a thin layer of another type of mulch. Peanut shells are not recommended for use as mulch. They carry white mold (Sclerotium rotfsii) that can cause a major problem in the garden. Peanut hulls also may be infested with nematodes, nutsedge seeds and/or tubers. No matter which mulch you select, adding mulch around your vegetable plants will produce better results, cut down on your workload and help conserve water. Because of the potential health risks associated with the consumption of improperly handled milk and dairy products, these products historically have been the most highly regulated segment of the food industry. For this reason the department maintains a laboratory specifically designed for analyzing milk and dairy products. "We devote a large number of resources to ensure the safety and wholesomeness of milk and dairy products," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black. "GDA actually does more sampling and testing of milk and dairy products than for any other single food product." Sanitarians from the Department's Food Safety Division take milk samples from dairy farms; processing facilities, including out-of-state processors; tank trucks; and from grocery and other stores that sell milk and milk products. Milk inspectors pull samples and submit them to the lab for tests on a monthly basis. In addition to the Department's sampling, some milk cooperatives take their own samples weekly to further assure the quality and safety of their raw milk. The Department's dairy laboratory Weights Per Bushel For Selected Crops When consumers shop at roadside stands or farmers' markets, they often buy harvested crops in bushel quantities. Following is a list of some Georgia fruit and vegetable crops with their corresponding weights per bushel. These weights are based on federal standards and can be used as general guidelines when purchasing these commodities in bushel quantities. This gives the dairy sanitarians a general idea of the sanitary conditions in effect at both the dairy farm and processing plant, as well as how the milk was handled during the pasteurization process. If the test results show higher than established limits, the laboratory notifies the appropriate food safety personnel and sanitarians, then work back to determine the source of contamination so the problem can be corrected. In the case of an imminent health hazard, the Department then moves immediately to close the facility until the problem can be corrected. The dairy laboratory also conducts coliform counts to determine if any coliform bacteria are present in finished product samples. Such contamination, if it exists, usually occurs during the processing of milk. If coliform bacteria are detected, dairy sanitarians return to the plant where the sample was taken and work with the processor to correct the problem. In addition, tests are conducted on both raw and processed milk samples to detect the presence of antibiotic residues. Antibiotics sometimes are given to humans and animals to prevent and treat diseases. The presence of residual antibiotics is an important human health concern since antibiotics used to treat cattle can be transferred to humans through the cow's milk. Any milk found with antibiotics is immediately destroyed. The dairy laboratory also tests samples of well water the producers use to wash their dairy cows, tanks, and other equipment, since water can be a medium for contamination. Since Georgia is a milk deficit state and must import much of its fluid milk, (Continued on Page 6) It's Time to Plant Dove Fields The mourning dove is one of the most popular game birds, and Georgia has an abundance of these birds throughout the state. Fall dove hunts are a Georgia tradition, and good hunts result from months of planning and preparation before the season begins. For a field to be ready to hunt in September, it should be planted now. Agricultural areas throughout Georgia have large numbers of doves. Larger agricultural fields that are unfit for many other game species provide good dove habitat and excellent hunting opportunities. Doves are seed eaters and feed on waste grains and weed seeds in agricultural fields. Dove hunting on baited areas is illegal. However, it's legal to plant a field with grains that doves prefer, harvest or mow all, part, or none of the field. In addition to attracting doves for hunting, wellmanaged fields provide benefits to many other species of wildlife throughout the year. A dove hunting field should be at least three acres and have at least one acre per hunter for safe conditions. You can attract numbers of doves throughout the season by alternating strips of different crops. Browntop millet matures in 60-70 days to provide excellent early-season hunting. Sunflower and Dove proso millet take 90-100 days to mature and are available after the browntop has been used. Grain sorghum can take up to 130 days to mature, therefore providing good, late season hunting opportunities. Plant strips about 50 feet wide and keep the field weed-free. Planting the field in rows will allow it to be cultivated periodically. Otherwise, scatter the seeds and use approved herbicides as needed to control weeds. Doves have weak legs and do not use areas where they have to scratch and search for food. Fields should be fertilized to insure good seed production. Plant fields so that seeds mature about two weeks prior to hunting. This gives birds an opportunity to locate the food and to begin using the area. Mowing helps scatter the grain and makes it more available for doves. In fields that are heavily covered with vegetation, it is beneficial to lightly disk a few strips to help the doves find seeds. Fields should not be hunted more than once or twice a week. Overshooting a field will drive the birds away. The success of any dove field depends on the quality, availability and timing of the seeds produced. Fields that continually supply mature grain are the best at attracting doves.
