On Jan. 5, Whole Foods Market, a national grocery company dedicated to selling the highest quality products available, unveiled a display of Georgia farmers markets. Many of the farmers he met told him that they had no avenue into grocery chains that might like to offer their customers locally grown fruits and vegetables. It was not commercially viable for chains to deal with a lot of small growers. But Granados had an idea: Local Vendors Coalition would be that path to opportunity for its members. "I don't look at things and think, `That won't work,'" says Granados. "I try to find ways to make it work. I realized I could use my skills and my knowledge and my energy to help other people grow to their fullest potential." Granados' business plan for Local Vendors Coalition, which he formed early in 2012, specifies helping 100 farmers expand their business by 20 percent in 2013, and he is actively recruiting more growers. By 2014, his goal is to generate more than $1 million of revenue for the farmers who are members of the LVC. He sees the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program as a marketing tool that will help him build relationships for the Local Vendors Coalition and markets for its members. "These are big goals, but with the right systems in place, we can do it," says Granados. Granados, who moved to Atlanta three years ago, has always set his sights (Continued on Page 12) Grown goods and produce at its store in the heart of Buckhead in metro Atlanta. Now Whole Foods customers can shop for locally grown vegetable, fruits, nuts and herbs. Local Vendors Coalition, a Georgia Grown Platinum member, handles the logistics of getting farmers' produce to grocery stores such as Whole Foods Market, restaurants, consumers and other buyers. Farmers join the coalition for an annual fee, and Granados connects the sellers and the buyers. "Farmers work so hard," he says from his midtown Atlanta office. "They can't be making phone calls and taking orders when they are in the fields working. They don't have time to deal with more paperwork. My goal is to help farmers find local markets." Granados was inspired to found Local Vendors Coalition when, after failing to find locally grown produce in Atlanta grocery stores, he began shopping at What to Do in Case of Horse Theft in Ga. What do you do if your horse is stolen in Georgia? The theft of a prized horse is very upsetting to the owner, who often wonders what can be done to prevent the horse from being sold at auction. By the time you realize your horse has been stolen, chances are good that the horse has been taken from the immediate area, if not the state, according to MAT Thompson, manager of the Equine Section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. "That's why it's important to spread the word to as many people as possible -- as quickly as possible," he said. The following are some suggestions Thompson suggests to keep in mind if your equine is stolen: * File a report with the local police department immediately, then contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Equine Section. The Department will notify equine livestock inspectors, equine auction markets, states bordering Georgia, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Georgia office. Be ready to give a complete description of your horse, including age, sex, height, color, markings, tattoos, brands, scars, injuries or other identifiable traits or marks. Here are a few guidelines from the Weed Science Society of America to keep in mind when buying a pesticide for any use. 1. Arrive at the store knowing the identity of the pest(s) that you are trying to control. The Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, or other trained professionals can help. 2. Make sure the pesticide will work on your pest(s). Check the label to see if the pest is listed and under what conditions it will be controlled. For example, an herbicide will not control weeds that are too large, and an insecticide will not solve an insect problem that is caused by poor food storage or ripped window screens. 3. Make sure the pesticide is registered for the "site" that you want to treat, and that you are willing to follow all directions for use. The crop, turf, household or other site must be listed on the label, and you must follow all directions concerning rate, timing, placement, weather conditions, etc. 4. Before you buy the product, make sure you can comply with all other label instructions as well. The label will list any (Continued on Page 11) * Send at least eight photographs of the horse to the Georgia Department of Agriculture so that equine inspectors can use the pictures to aid in the recovery. The photos should be recent and clearly show color and markings. * Contact -- or better still, visit -- equine auction markets. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, January 9, 2013 Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Use these merchandise items to share the Georgia Grown message and help Georgia's farmers and others who grow food and make products here in Georgia. There's a growing consumer interest in locally produced farm products. Whether it is organically grown fruits and vegetables, free range poultry, or grassfeed beef, many consumers are seeking out more sources of locally produced farm commodities. At "Bob's Biddies," a small hatchery in Ray City, Georgia, the motto is, "backyard grown and backyard hatched." The locally owned and operated hatchery specializes in true Dominique, Rhode Island Reds, Delaware, New Hampshire Reds and Buff Orpington chicks, although additional breeds, such as Ameraucana, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and Cuckoo Marans, also are available. In addition, the hatchery has its own breed, Dena's Special, which is a calicocolored, brown-egg layer. "Our chickens are just like your Grandma used to raise," Berry said, "and we use all natural food." He noted his grandparents raised Dominiques and Rhode Island Reds, and ever since he visited their home as a young man, he has had a fondness for chickens. Later in life, he visited a feed store and saw an incubator for sale and bought it. Berry started hatching a few eggs and selling the baby chicks as a hobby, but he realized it could turn into a profitable business. A retired construction engineer, Berry was diagnosed with glaucoma in the late 1980s, and found his failing eyesight affected his ability to operate his small hatchery. Because he could not drive to deliver his chicks, either his wife, Diane, had to deliver them or his customers had to pick them up. Berry's solution was to ship chicks directly to his customers. However, before he could begin shipping his chicks, he had to obtain certification from the National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP). This program was established in the mid1930s to keep poultry free from disease. NPIP requirements depend upon the type of business the producer operates and the breeds or type of poultry raised. Before certifying a producer, NPIP representatives conduct a site visit to test the stock, eggs and facilities. Once approved, the producer must have his or her eggs tested periodically at one of the NPIP certified labs located throughout the state. At this stage of his business endeavor, Berry contacted the Georgia Department of Labor Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Program in Valdosta, Ga. The program is designed to assist people with disabilities to achieve independence and meaningful employment. As part of the application process, Berry had to write a business plan and the VR office referred him to the (Continued on Page 12) The Market Bulletin will publish its special listing of pick-your-own strawberry farms March 6. All GFC tree seedlings are adapted to Georgia's unique climate and soils, and they have been cultured to provide a fibrous root system, large stem diameter, and abundant energy reserves to insure the best possible survival and growth. Seedlings sold as bare root should be planted as soon as possible. Until planting, keep the seedlings cool and damp; provide air circulation, and protect from heat, freezing, and drying conditions. Additional information, including seedling price list, planting guidelines, and directions to GFC's Flint River Nursery, is provided online at www.gfc.state.ga.us. Poinsettias cannot tolerate frosts and freezes. Adventurous gardeners in the warmest parts of Georgia may try planting a poinsettia outdoors in a protected spot, but even they should wait until spring as their indoor poinsettia is not acclimated to go from the warmth of indoors to the colder temperatures outside. For most people, poinsettias are best added to the compost pile after they finish blooming. *** How can I tell when to repot a houseplant? One of the first signs that a plant should be moved to a larger container is frequent wilting due to rapid drying of the soil. To determine if a plant needs repotting, turn the plant out of the pot and look at the soil ball. If a thick mat of roots is present on the outside of the soil ball, the plant usually benefits from repotting. *** I want to grow herbs on my kitchen windowsill. Do you have any suggestions? If you want to try to grow herbs indoors, put them in the sunniest window in your house whether it is in your kitchen or not. A south-facing window is best. Many of the herb-growing kits sold at Christmas have pots that are too small to adequately grow anything but a few seedlings. Your pots should be at least five or six inches deep and wide. They should also have one or more drainage holes at the bottom. A few herbs you may want to try are basil, thyme, oregano, poliomintha (Mexican oregano), chives and parsley. In Georgia we can grow many herbs outdoors, even in the winter. While a kitchen herb garden sounds clever, it is usually less productive and practical than growing herbs outdoors, at least as far as cold-hardy herbs are concerned. Consult your local nursery or garden center for more tips and supplies including plants and seeds. Equine Section informs these facilities, they cannot make them look for your horse. It's also a good idea to send photos directly to these facilities. The current list can be obtained from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Some further recommendations from the Equine Section include the following: * Place ads in newspapers, horse publications, etc. * Contact radio and television stations. * Distribute fliers and pictures to as many places as possible (that is, feed stores, tack shops, grocery stores, etc.). * Check the Internet. Several organizations now provide space for stolen horse reports. The Georgia Department of Agriculture currently is working on adding stolen horses to its website. The Department of Agriculture will do its best to help in each and every case, but the owners who have taken the initiative to help themselves have the best chance of finding their stolen horses. Notify, identify, and follow-up are the key words in reporting a horse theft. For more information, contact MAT Thompson at 404-656-3713 or Mark.Thompson@agr.georgia.gov. A Farm Bureau member since 1977, Duvall and his wife, Bonnie, raise broilers, hay and beef cattle on their farm in Greene County. Georgia Farm Bureau is the largest general farm organization in the state. The organization has 158 county offices, and its volunteer members actively participate in local, district and state activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors. organization is provided below. FFA operates on local, state and national levels. Student members belong to chapters organized at the local school level, and agricultural education instructors serve as chapter advisors. Chapters are organized under state associations headed by an advisor and executive secretary, often employees of the state department of education. State FFA organizations conduct programs and host annual conventions. The association prepares students by helping them develop leadership and life skills that will shape their decisionmaking and values for the remainder of their lives. Involvement in FFA helps students build self-esteem and prepare for career success. Students between the ages of 12 and 21 who are enrolled in a systematic course of instruction in agricultural education are eligible for membership in FFA. In order to join, the student must be in a local school system that offers agricultural instruction and has an active FFA chapter. Founded in 1928, the former "Future Farmers of America" brought together students, teachers and agribusiness to solidify support for agricultural education. The name of the organization was changed to the National FFA Organization in 1988 to reflect the growing diversity of agriculture. Currently, there are 540,369 FFA members, in 7,489 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands engaged in a wide range of agricultural education activities. Georgia FFA, founded in 1929, is the 3rd largest state association in the nation with more than 34,000 members. There are 285 chapters and more than 400 agricultural education teachers in Georgia. (Continued on Page 12) Pesticide Buyers (Continued from Page 1) required protective clothing, all precautions for protecting the environment, first aid ("statement of practical treatment") in case of an accident, re-entry intervals after treatment and storage and disposal requirements. Not following the label may result in criminal charges and fines, as well as personal injury if the required protective clothing ("personal protective equipment" or "PPE") is not used. 5. Know when you are buying a pesticide. Any product making a pest control claim should be registered as a pesticide with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This includes all products labeled for pest control on your farm, lawn or garden, but many other products as well. For example, flea collars, "weed and feed" fertilizers and insect baits or repellents that contain an "active ingredient" to control specific pests are pesticides too. 6. Make sure you are buying a pesticide that has a current EPA registration number on the label. If you see a counterfeit product for sale, notify the Georgia Department of Agriculture 7. Buy small amounts preferably what you can use in one year or less. This reduces the need to store and dispose of pesticides. 8. When buying a pesticide, be careful about whom you ask for advice. The best source of information is the Georgia Department of Agriculture or the Cooperative Extension Service. Store employees, friends and neighbors may or may not know the correct answers to your questions. 9. Understand what a "premix" is, so you can determine if you need it. A premix contains more than one active ingredient. This will provide control of more pest species. It also may reduce the chance of pest resistance developing if the active ingredients have different modes/sites of action on the same pest. 10. Never purchase a "restricted use" pesticide unless you have been trained and certified to use it for the particular category of use. Applicators can be certified in various categories, such as agricultural crops, greenhouses, structures, turf and ornamentals and public health. You do not have to be certified to purchase a "general use" pesticide. "In addition to following the label affixed to the pesticide container, always look for references to documents that include more detailed application requirements. For example, almost all fumigants have a separate fumigation manual that has very important requirements for safe handling of fumigants," said Tommy Gray, associate director of GDA's Plant Industry Division. "Also, products labeled for agricultural uses will reference EPA's Worker Protection Standard for additional safety requirements. These documents are known as "labeling" and their requirements are just as enforceable as those on the label affixed to the container." Bob's Biddies (Continued from Page 6) Georgia AgrAbility project. A grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, AgrAbility is a free service offered to workers in production agriculture that have health conditions or disabilities. The AgrAbility staff then worked with Berry on developing and writing his business plan and in getting the proper required documentation. Having obtained his NPIP certification, Berry could ship his chicks anywhere, and his business could truly expand. "We offer professionally sexed pullets and cockerels, and we can ship just about anywhere there is a post office," Berry said. Berry notes his hatchery business is not just about profits, although he does need to make a living. However, he believes in giving his birds the personal care and attention needed for them to grow healthy and happy. Raked pine needles can be used to improve the appearance of existing beds and provide mulch for new beds. Also, rake fallen leaves to add to an existing compost pile or to begin a new one. Be on the lookout for tree seedlings in bed areas. It is much easier to pull them now before the roots grow too deep. Begin pruning of deciduous shade trees. Limbs of evergreens also can be pruned this month. Plant all types of ornamental trees and shrubs this month. January also is an ideal time for planting fruit and nut trees as well as blueberries and figs. In addition, you can transplant trees and overgrown shrubs. House plants grow very little during the short days of winter, so be sure you do not water or fertilize them too often. Water the plants only when the soil becomes slightly dry to the touch. Vendors Coalition (Continued from Page 1) high, managing to overcome setbacks since the very beginning of his life. Complications during his birth left him deaf and unable to speak until he was three or four, when a doctor finally treated him for fluids in his ears. School was difficult for him because of learning disabilities that prevented him from reading on his grade level. A so-so student, Granados had always been the class clown, he says, but in high school, he began taking on leadership roles, becoming president of his class and captain of the football team. He became an Eagle Scout. "I trained myself to focus," Granados says, noting that he has always sought mentors. "I became obsessed with being a leader and a positive example to others." Granados also became an entrepreneur at 15, when he started a business as a disc jockey. By the time he was in college at Pennsylvania State University, his business had grown so that he managed a team of DJs who kept the music going for college parties. After first considering a career in the hospitality industry, Granados founded Altimaxx, a brokerage company that connects buyers and sellers of products, after one of his mentors told him, "If you can sell, you can do anything." Now Granados is using his entrepreneurial skills to help farmers and is passionate about getting the local communities to support the local growers. Getting Georgia Grown products from LVC members into Whole Foods Market is just the first step. "Farmers built this entire country, and what they're doing is unappreciated," he says, noting that he owes his mentors for his success. "I put myself on the shoulders of giants and am grateful for the help. Now I can help others." To learn more about the Local Vendors Coalition, visit www.georgiagrown.com.
