MARKET BULLETIN BUREAU OF MARKETS OL. 10, STATS CAPITOL _ ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, SEPT, 29, 1997, THE COMMISSIONERS TRIP TO NEW ORLEANS I attended my first meeting of the Southern Commission- _ ers of Agriculture of the United States, in New Orleans, on the 16th of September. S ce I was very much impressed with the earnestness of the Commissioners to really serve the farmers and the sincerity o: their motives in all of the things advocated at the meeting. - The first thing that the Association took up was the con- _ demning of the prediction, made by the Bureau of Statistics _ of the U. 8. Department of Agriculture, that cotton would sell cheaper. This was unanimously condemned by the Commiss- ioners present, and a resolution to that effect was immediately _ given to the Associated Press. : The prediction of the-price of cotton was not only contra- ry to law, as the Bureau is not to make any predictions as to the price of any article; it. was also, according to the opinion | of the Commissioners, erroneous. s | If the Bureau of Statistics keeps up this policy of predicting prices, it should be abolished, for this one prediction cost the eotton growers of the South no less than one hundred million dollars. Mr. Jardine should fire the party responsible for this _ prediction being made. re \ After giving our resolution condemning this act of the Bureau of Statistics of the Department of Agriculture at Wash- ington, we visited the Stock Exchange of New Orleans in a - body. We gave a copy of our resolution to the manager of the ~ Stock Exchange and it was posted on the wall of every stock - exchange in the.U. 8S. I dont know that our resolution eaused the rise in price, but while we were in the exchange, cotton _ went up 45 points, and slight things, besides supply and de- ' mand, do affect the prices, on the stock exchange, of all com- . modities. - We then had dinner at one of the old French restaurants in _ New Orleans, prepared in regular French style. It was my first trip to New Orleans and my first experience with stich _ cooking. JI enjoyed my dinner very much. AEG: After dinner, we met again and adopted a resolution calling on all of the manufacturers, merchants and ginners,. to use cotton in place of jute. The best way to keep up the price of cotton is to find new needs and uses for cotton. We discussed several other matters of great importance to the people, which I will elaborate on in another article. At the close of the meeting I extended an invitation to the Convention of Southern Commissioners of Agriculture 6f the U.S. to have their next annual meeting in Atlanta, some time in August, 1928. The invitation was unanimously accepted and this will be their first meeting in Georgia. I enjoyed meeting with the Commissioners very much and regretted that I could not be thrown with them longer, as most of them had been in office from ten to twenty years and had had experience on a great many things that I had not. While in the city I v:sited three of the large hotels, the Montelon, the St. Charles and the Roosevelt. These hotels will compare favorably with the best in Atlanta. I noticed in each of these hotels, that all of their help was white people. White girls running the eleyators, white waitresses in the eafes, white bellboys and porters, white doormen and white transportation clerks. There is a large army of ambitions young white girls and young white boys in every city in Georgia, that want and need employment. I would be glad to see some of our hotels take the lead in Georgia and have all white help in these posi- tions. Our girls and boys need the work and it will improve . the morale of your hotels. It may seem that I am diverging & little from the topic that I should discuss, in referring to this, but it has been acutely drawn to my attention in the last two and a half months that there are thousands of our white girls and boys that are deserving and wanting work and cannot find it, right, in the city of Atlanta. / EUGENE TALMADGE, Commissioner of Agriculture. = MARKET REPORT ' Prevailing Wholesale Prices September 23, 1927. | | REMEMBER, THESE PRICES MAY VARY FROM DAY TO DAY | SAVANNAH ee ATLANTA . MARKET BULLETIN BUREAU OF MARKETS C. H. BISHOP, Director DEPARTMENT AGRICULTURE EUGENE TALMADGE Commissioner Issued Weekly, Each Thursday Entered as second class matter February 16, pee , #t the Postoffies at Atlanta, Georgia r.fhe Act ef June 6, 1900. Accepted for siailtinee at spestal rate af postage provided for. in geetion 1108, Aet of Oetober 8, 1917 IMPORTANT: Eaeh individual ad for the Bullefin should be sent in on separate piece of paper. No ad will be repeated unless extra copies are sent. Under Act of the Legislature the Bureau cannot, and does net, assume any responsibility for transactions carried ou through the Bulletin. Our services are en- tirely FREE. Just send us your name and ad- dress if you wish us to place you on.our mailing list. Remember or columns are free to those ad- vertising items produced on the farm, preference being given to such as are of interest to the greatest number. According to Postal Regula- tions, we cannot carry any adver- tisements for those who buy and sell. ATTENTION DEALERS! We are carrying in this weeks issue a hst of eommodities offered by } farmers in ear lots. We will ap- preetate the dealers giving careful attention to this, and, if interested, communicate directly with the! producer. This is an effort to improve our service to Georgia buyers and sell- ers, and we hope they will both advise us if they obtain satisfac- _ tory results. Mr. Jones, of Upchurch & Jones, urges that the best way to handle the tremendous feed crop in Georgia this year is to feed it to eattle and sell the cattle. He states that the market on cattle next four vears, and he is very emphatic that the farmer should pay more attention to keeping pure bred bulls on his farm. Mr. Milsaps, of Braggs, Milsaps & Blackwell, is of the same opin- ion, and, in addition to the above, urges that ealves should be de- horned at about the age of six months. He states that a ear load of beef cattle would bring from one half to one cent per pound more if this is done. It is hard for a man to realize the great quantity of feed it takes for live stock. He can usually market his surplus potatoes, corn and hay to a greater advantage through live stock than in any other manner. In marketing his products in this way, he has a tremendous ad- vantage of use of home made fer- tilizer on his own farm. CHS. DIVERSIFIED FARMING, ITS BENEFITS AND POSSI. BLITIES Recently thirty farm womn of Texas visited California and oth- ern wsttn states fo study the 2 MARKET [eause and effect of farm prosper- ity and to secure first hand infor- mation on the practice followed in those states where _ statistics show farming operations to be most profitable. The trip was made under the auspices of the Cotton Associa- | tion and all arrangements were made by the Association. | The delegation of farm women was enthusiastically received by western_neighbors, who welcomed and entertained them. -.In Colorado Springs the party visited the: Colorado Bean Grow- ers Association, organized less than two years ago but which in- creased its volume of business from 18 cars of Pinto beans the first year to over 300 ears this past season. According to officials of the Cotton Association who, were pres- |_ ent on/this trip, Colorado leaders told the visitors that their farm problems would be solved when farmers are organized and when Southern farm women take a di- rect interest in the merchandising of farm products. They also stressed the import- ance of education, because on the young generation of today will )farming methods advance and eo- operative marketing ride to. vie- tory.? The party visited the Mountain States Beet Growers Association of Colorado, The Colorado Potato Growers Association, which hand- led 42 per cent of the potatoes of the state and which has placed millions of dollars into the hands of its members. At Petuluma, they visited the: largest Poultry and Egg center in the world. There a 1,800,000 egg incubator is operated. 75,000 baby chicks are hatched and shipped each day during the season except Sunday. The incu- bator is electrically operated and is said to be the largest in the world. All eggs are automati- eally turned every four hours for the first 18 days and cooled 30 minutes each day. A eareful study was es ar Fresno, of the raisin Growers As- sociation. The city of Fresno has been made the the co-operative raisin. They also visited a large Creamery where milk from 20,000 COWS 1S handled. They visited packing plants of California Fruit Growers, where fruits are graded carefully ac- cording to standard regulations. California standards of packing and grading fruits anl vegetables are adhered to strictly by the pro- ducer, and the fact that merchants everywhere know that they can depend upon all California ship- ments to be of high-grade and uniform has had much to do with the farmers and fruit growers of Californio being able to sell their products in all part of the world. The buyer knows thru exper- ience that California fruits and vegetables will be of the best quality only. ,This study and survey of the BULLETIN _ Texas farm women would be of little value if it led us to think that California has 8 something apart from our own, according to authorities, It has. not. California is 2000 miles fur- ther from the markets of the world than we are. All of their princi- pal crops are under irrigation, but they have two tthings which has made their farmers famous throughout the world and that is thoroughness and a. co-operative spirit. California is now the most prosperous state in the Union from an agricultural standpoint and yet it has not .the natural agricul- tural possibilities of Georgia. Georgia may even surpass Cal- ifornia when the farmers learn to co-operate and observe strict grad- ing and packing regulations. California farm women are vital factors in the states agricultural activities. Thinking people _ be- lieve that the farm women of Georgia can wield a powerful in- fluence in making the marketing of Georgias far mproduets profit- able, and that is their duty to study up to date methods of farm- ing and marketing and in this way help to keep Georgias agricultur- al activites abreast of the times |- with the best possible financial re- turns.
