BUREAU OF MARKETS STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, SEP. 8, 1927. REX TO MR. TALMADGE ; ~ ee - August 30 1927. Hon. Eugene Talmadge, cas ' Commissioner of Agriculture, _ Atlanta, Ga. _ Dear Mr. Talmadge: , ee - as 4 _. Allow me to congratulate you on your effort to stimulate consumption of sweet potatoes. It is very gratifying 1 to know that you aresinterested in this commodity, ' \ ~ Your eors, to increase consumption by proclamation and otherwise calling attention to this food item is a step in the right direction but does not reach the vital point in the prob- lem. The work of increasing consumption must begin at the : shipping end. So long as potatoes are shipped in bags or bulk and roughly handled when being packedin containers there _can be very little accomplished toward interesting the average housewife in buying them. A large. percentage of fruits and_ 1 vegetables is now distributed through self. service stores. In- this way the merchandise sells itself. If it is unattractive the buyer passes it up. Under present methods of handling sweet - potatoes they are the most unattractive item in the stores, I suggest you have your market representative verify this state- ment by a visit to both the wholesaie and retail distributors, We have spent thousands of dollars cae the past eight. years exclusively on developing the sweet potato industry of the south only to find that it is impossible to make it a depend- able. source of revenue to producers until they are made to realize the importance of carefully preparing potatoes for market. This is the basis of the whole problem and ean be solved only by your department definitely organizing growers around some standard of pac king and orderly marketing. Our experience covers every phase of the industry from 5 sagtnally walking between the plow handles to produce them up to and including cooking demonstrations in the home of northern consumers. If you can make, use of our services in. your effort to advance this commodity, we'll be glad to have you call on us. Very respectfully, GEORGIANA SWEET POTATO EXCHANGE W. E.
