Georgia Should Lead in Agriculture Thursday, July 28, 1927 DIVERSIFIED FARMING --- ITS BENEFITS AND POSSIBILITIES | Buy Georgia Products First _ Edited by Mrs. Norman Sharp, Assistant Director State Bureau of In enumerating the value and possibilities of diversified farm- | ing and the benefits that will follow promoting the use of Georgia Products, attention should be called to the fact that one of the first logical and essential steps in the direction of practical and success- ful diversified farming requires that each farm provide food and feed for those living on the farm and for all live stock, poultry, ete. Expert authorities in agricultural development point out that no system of farming can be considered safe that does not provide. for Markets. cluding vegetables and fruits can be canned, preserved, dried and laid by for the winter use. of families living on the farm, and also a large surplus which can be easily marketed later in the towns and cities. If every farmer in Georgia will undertake to raise and grow all food supplies for his individual family and farm needs, we will have made a splendid and far reaching step in the direction of suc- cessful diversified farming. the maintenance of the farm first. . The rural population of Georgia is large, and it is generally con- ceded that a great sum of money is now being spent outside of the state annually for foodstuffs, by those living on and operating farms, who do not provide in their planting programs for all family and } farm needs. Each family living on the farm that does not provide for all| food supplies adds to the sum that goes outside the state to en-, rich the farmer of other sections. Three crops of almost every variety of food products can be suc- cessfully grown in Georgia each year with the exception of citrus | fruits and a few non essentials. .With unlimited opportunities for raising so many varieties of foodstuffs, feed, poultry and cattle, a program of balanced farming ; may be easily outlined. Beginning with the small family farm and embracing the large plantation a slogan of Provide for Farm Maintenance FIRST might well be universally adopted and put into practice. Swiss Chard matures in from 60 to 80 days. Leaves should be tied up to blanch. Field Peas may be planted during July and the turned under vines will serve as a splendid fertilizer.
