STATE BUREAU OF MARKETS B. A. HANCOCK, Acting Director Established by J. J. Brown, Commissioner of Agriculture, March 1, 1917. GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE State Capitol, Atlanta, Ga. ae : Entered as second class matter Feb 7 ruary 15, 1922, at the Postoffice at Atlanta, Georgia, under the act of J 19 Accepted for mailing at special rate of postage provided for in section oe. Act of October 3, 1917. a IMPORTANT NOTICE: All patrons of Market Bulletin should b motice repeated, send copy: The Bulletin goes to gecas ee Oa oe ae SO ee _ VOL. 10. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 19, 1926. , No. 1 a saa R ot em meno a 7 amente GEORGIA MARKET BUREAU AIDS FARMERS The great value of the eres bureau of casters coadieted by: the eke Sdisbereient of agriculture has been ab tested i in the case of watermelon marketing by Georgia growers this season. The work has been done largely in co- operation with the county and district farm agents and according to the records farmers who have utilized the facilities of the bureau of markets and cooperated with the farm agents have reaped splendid results on their watermelon crop as compared to those who have acted independently. Owing to the enormous volume of fruit production i in Ciena opathos with the vast watermelon crop, it has been practically impossible for the markets to absorb the offerings and unless the expert service of the bureau of markets and the farm agents. was utilized many of the farmers failed to receive even enough money on their watermelon ship- ments to pay freight. The situation reached such a bad stage at one time until the railroads refused to remove water- _melons unless freight was guaranteed. I In striking contrast to this, the baat fone agents and burcug of markets succeeded in handling prachieally all offerings submitted through them so as to net the producers from $75 to $150 per car for watermelons, depending on the size wae location, while their own offerings could not be moved. * In view of the fact that the melon crop of Georgia must ee amounted to between 30,000 and:40,000 carloads, it naturally follows that the amount of money really made by the farmers in this work was tremendous. It was not only a saving but was an. actual gain, making money inspead. of losing it, as was the case of some of thane who. did not use the market bureau system. ce . Q If the Georgia farmers can fake this much money out of the bureau of markets, there seems to be no reason hn wie the work should not be carried on and greater use made of it in the future. The records and the reports from all over the country indicate that where the bureau of markets operates and is extensively patronized by the growers and pre ducers, magnificent returns are recewed therefrom.
