A Georgia FFA chapter won the Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE two years in a row: Banks County in 2022 and Bleckley County this year. Also, Demark FFA in Forsyth County was Georgia's first chapter to win the Veterinary Science CDE at the national level. With four national CDE wins at this year's convention, Georgia tied Texas for the most CDE wins in the nation. (Georgia FFA/Special Photo) Ben Lastly, executive secretary of the Georgia FFA Association, said he was proud of all Georgia FFA members and teachers for their work throughout the year. He said the success at the national con- vention was a testament to that effort. "To earn success on the national level requires commit- ment to classroom instruction as well as time practicing for CDEs and with SAEs (Supervised Agricultural Experience) after school, on weekends and through the summer," Lastly said. "When Georgia students compete against their peers from across the nation, our students rise to the top. That speaks to the commitment from our teachers, staff, sponsors and elected officials who provide resources that allow our young people to thrive." Each year the FFA convention names four students as National Finalists in each of 45 proficiency areas. At this year's convention, Georgia had 18 national proficiency award finalists and five proficiency winners. The five Georgia FFA members named national FFA proficiency award winners for their SAE programs were: Jack Lingenfelter, Coffee County, Agricultural Communications Joseph Ledford, Jackson-Empower, Ag Mechanics Repair & Maintenance-Entrepreneurship Jamin Miles, Appling County, Fruit Production Adam Stone, Bowdon, Service Learning Thomas Dehoff, Screven County, Wildlife Management Georgia FFA's three winners in the national Agriscience Fair were: Erin Keith, Franklin County Middle, Food Products and Processing, Division 1 Emi Walker and Hazel Brubaker, Malcom Bridge Middle, Plant Systems, Division 2 See NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, page 23 Georgia Trustees recognize Georgia wines, distilled spirits industry with annual awards Please deliver this paid subscription to: Published by the Ga. The event was held at the Legacy Theater in Alpharetta, where the competition offered Georgia vintners, distillers, mead, and cider makers an opportunity to have their products evaluated before 24 judges from across the United States. The Trustees awarded 183 gold, silver and bronze medals to products entered, along with awards for Best of categories. The diversity of the state's wine and spirits industry is reflected in the GTWSC annual awards. The competition started in 2015 for Georgia's wines and was expanded to include categories in meads, ciders and distilled spirits in 2019. This year, judges across all categories participated in the competition in September at Boone's restaurant at the Bobby Jones The Georgia Trustees Wine and Spirits Competition awarded medals and awards to over 180 Georgia grown and made products at annual gala. The competition judged 125 wines, 22 meads, four ciders and 40 distilled spirits for a total of 191 total entries. Wayne Crawford, a GTWSC board member and author of the guide book, Georgia Vineyards and Wineries, said Georgia's diversity of wines and spirits is a strength that he sees as an advantage in building the industry. He said, in particular, Georgia muscadine wines are a growing category in reputation and quality. "In 5-10 years from now, we can do an East Coast muscadine competition to bring in other states. We have the right leadership to make that happen. It would also be right because we're in the muscadine state, and we have the most acreage," Crawford said. Muscadine wine makers receiving medals or awards in this year's GTWSC included Paulk Vineyards of Wray, Horse Creek Vineyards of Nashville, Still Pond Winery of Arlington, Wolf Creek Plantation Vineyards of Americus, and Mulberry Springs Vineyards of Flowery Branch. James and David Sturgeon of White Path Distillery in Ellijay received the Distillery of Distinction Award for 2023 and Best of awards for their Rum Mango, Brandy, and Whiskey. James Sturgeon said they are a small family-run distillery, and entering competitions like the GTWSC helps them build the See GEORGIA WINES, page 23 PAGE 2 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2023 Advertise in the Market Bulletin Classified advertisements in the Market Bulletin are free to subscribers and limited to one ad per issue per subscriber number. Well, that happened to us with the header, or title, of the Market Bulletin's Christmas tree farm listing published in the last issue. We misspelled Christmas, "Chrismtas." We apologize for this error. It is a misspelling so unusual that the word processing software I am using to write this article is having a fit from me typing the mistyping. Christmas. It is a time of the year so many people look forward to. The word Christ- mas is everywhere greeting cards, church, lit up on front yards with plastic Santas and snowmen. As we move closer to Dec. 25, Christmas is on our lips as we greet each other, "Merry Christmas!" and "Merry Christmas to you, too!" The word is engrained in our minds, but apparently, not mine. Let me explain. Nick Vassy, the Market Bulletin business manager, and I began working on the listing in October. Our friends from the Georgia Forestry Commission provided a list of tree farms, which we included along with the list provided by Cheryl Smith, the Georgia Grown program's agritourism manager. In all, 77 entries appear on this year's tree farm listing. We matched the tree farms from both lists to ensure no one was left out. We then made sure the types of trees listed under each entry were correct. After that, we double-checked phone numbers and street addresses. Just like Santa, we made a list and checked it twice. It was a lot of tedious work, but we felt we had done a good job. That was until after printing when our team member at the Georgia Forestry Commission alerted us to the error. We had gotten so deep in the needles and bramble of each entry that we missed the title. The transposed T and M shined as bright as a star on top of a Christmas tree. I felt terrible. Until now, I have used "we" in this article, but like a load of Fraser firs being dropped, the sense of responsibility fell on me. As editor, I should have caught it. We corrected the spelling in the online version of the Nov. 15 Market Bulletin. The Christmas tree listing also appears in this issue with the revision. As editor, I regret the error, and as a lesson learned, it is hard not to miss. Accountability is the cornerstone of integrity, and I promise to do better. We wish you the best this holiday season. Thank you for being a loyal Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin subscriber. USDA designates Georgia counties for disaster relief following drought conditions Staff Reports United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack issued a natural disaster declaration for five counties in Southwest and Northeast Georgia following a sustained period of drought, adding to the fifteen Northwest Georgia Counties already declared primary natural disaster areas in recent weeks. Impacted counties include Decatur, Early, Miller, Seminole, and Union, which have sustained eight or more weeks of severe, extreme, or exceptional drought conditions. The declaration was announced on Nov. 16, allowing USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend essential emergency credit to Georgia farmers affected by these weather events. "For the first time in four years, Georgia has been impacted by extreme drought conditions - negatively impacting our states No. 1 industry and our farmers livelihoods," Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper said. "Again, I want to thank Secretary Vilsack for moving quickly to make much-needed relief available to Georgia farmers and producers, and I will continue to do everything possible to assist those impacted by the drought so they can bounce back stronger than before." Earlier this month, the USDA issued a natural disaster declaration for four northwest Georgia counties due to drought Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, and Walker. On Nov. 10, the USDA added 11 more counties as natural disaster declaration areas due to drought Bartow, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, and Whitfield. USDA FSA loans can be used to meet various recovery requirements, including replacing essential items such as farm equipment or livestock, reorganizing a farming operation, or refinancing specific loans. FSA reviews all loans based on the extent of losses, security available, and repayment ability, and Georgia farmers and producers in these counties are eligible to apply. Each declaration has a separate deadline for filing applications for assistance. A June 30, 2024 deadline is set for Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade and Walker counties. A July 6, 2024, deadline is set for Bartow, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens and Whitfield counties. Contiguous counties also eligible include Catoosa, Chattooga, Cobb, Forsyth, Fulton, Hall, Paulding, Polk, Union, Walker and White. A July 13, 2024 deadline is set for Decatur, Early, Miller, Seminole and Union counties. Contiguous counties also eligible include Baker, Calhoun, Clay, Fannin, Grady, Lumpkin, Mitchell, Towns and White. "I was just hoping for one of the (Best of) plaques, and we're really excited. We saw the two distillery awards up there, and we didn't think we would get either one of them because we're kind of new to it, but we put in a lot of effort," Sturgeon said. White Path also received a Double Gold medal for their Rum Mango. Dalton Distill- ery's Jones Brothers Moonshine Salted Carmel also won a Double Gold medal. Crawford said competitions like the GTWSC are constantly working to include as wide a variety of producers as possible. He said the GTWSC has a great mix of wineries and is working to get more entries in the other categories. "The thing that concerns me more is the ciders. We have seven, and only one came. That doesn't mean it's wrong. It means, `What do we have to do?" Crawford said. "Part of it is having faith in our judges. You can't build a program like this unless you've been at it long enough to build a reputation." GTWSC award sponsors were Georgia Grown, Biltmore Insurance, Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, Ison Nursery and Vineyards, Dubose Porter Family, Gilmer Chamber of Commerce, The Ashford restaurant and Lillie Glassblowers. PAGE 24 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2023 A good tractor at any age found at the Ga. National Antique Ag show James Fillyaw of Doerun had several tractors on display at the fifth annual Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show. Fillyaw owns 20 tractors he restored over the years. The one piece of advice he offered to newbie tractor buffs is to get in toward the end of a parade when driving their tractor. "There's no guarantee that a machine 50 years old will keep going when you want it to," said Fillyaw, a fixture at the annual Doerun May Day parade. "I don't want to hold up the parade." Fillyaw joined other vintage farm enthusiasts at the show held Nov. 9-11 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry. Over 400 pieces of equipment and attractions rooted in old farm ways entertained show-goers of all ages. This year's Antique Agriculture Show coincided with a gun show, a car show and the Southeast Showdown, an annual high school rodeo competition. Next year's show is scheduled for Nov. 7-9, 2024. The engine was built in 1925 and was used to power anything requiring slow, steady belt-driven power, from washing machines to corn grinders. (GDA/Jay Jones) Mercer Medical: Diabetes is an important health topic for rural Georgia By Scott Saunders Third-year MD student Mercer University School of Medicine As November rolls around, many of us are looking forward to the holiday festivities and the onset of cooler weather. But another important aspect of November deserves our attention: Diabetes Awareness Month. Given the significance of this health condition in Georgia and beyond, we must take a moment to discuss it, understand it, and consider ways to address it. Understanding Diabetes Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body manages blood sugar. Blood sugar, or glucose, is essential for ener- gy. It's sourced from the food we eat and is regulated by a hormone called insulin, produced by the pancreas. In diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't use it effectively. This inefficiency leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which, over time, can cause serious health complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, and blindness, among others. Types of Diabetes Type 1 Diabetes: Often diagnosed in children and young adults, this type occurs when the body doesn't produce insulin. Those with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin injections or use an insulin pump to manage their blood sugar levels. Type 2 Diabetes: More common than Type 1, it can develop at any age. Here, the body does produce insulin but doesn't use it efficiently. Lifestyle factors, including diet and physical activity, play a significant role in managing and even preventing Type 2 diabetes. Recognizing the Symptoms Some common symptoms to be aware of include: Excessive thirst and frequent urination Extreme hunger, even after eating Unexplained weight loss Fatigue and irritability Blurred vision or vision loss If these symptoms sound familiar, consulting a healthcare professional is crucial. Taking Action Awareness is the first step, but taking action is essential. Here's what you can do: Dietary Choices: Prioritize a balanced diet rich in whole foods, like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Reducing processed foods, especially those high in sugars and unhealthy fats, can make a difference. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can significantly reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and help manage the condition if already diagnosed. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week. Regular Health Screenings: Regular check-ups can detect early signs of diabetes, ensuring timely intervention. Stay Educated: Knowledge is a powerful tool. Stay updated on the latest research, tips, and advice related to diabetes. Final Thoughts Our state's vibrant agricultural community thrives when we are healthy and informed. By understanding the risks and preventative measures associated with diabetes, we can ensure a brighter, healthier future for ourselves, our families, and our fellow Georgians. As you delve into November's bounty, from fresh produce to festive meals, remember the importance of moderation and making health-conscious choices. This Diabetes Awareness Month, let's pledge to prioritize our health, making informed decisions that benefit us for years to come.
