BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2022 VOL. 105, NO. 26 COPYRIGHT 2022 Georgia Farm Bureau members celebrate 85 years at annual convention MACON The Georgia Farm Bureau celebrated its 85th anniversary during the group's annual convention held on Dec. 4-6 on Jekyll Island. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp noted accomplishments in agriculture during the past year and looked forward to 2023. Over 1,400 delegates attended the convention and tradeshow this month with the theme "85 Years and Growing." The theme offered delegates a chance to look back at the work of the GFB since it began in 1937 while also celebrating new ag development and awareness programs. Kemp acknowledged the importance of Georgia farmers, saying, "Agriculture is our No. 1 industry. I know that and won't forget it." He also thanked Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black for his 12 years of service in leading the Georgia Department of Agriculture and building the Georgia Grown brand for products made in the Peach State. Kemp touted the successes from the 2022 General Assembly session with the Right to Farm Act, expanding the ag elementary education program, and the passing of Senate Bill 396, which establishes the framework for Georgia food banks to purchase fresh produce directly from Georgia farmers. "Senate Bill 396 empowers us to fully utilize the Georgia Farm to Food Bank Pro- 10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary Georgia Farm Bureau President Tom McCall, left, welcomes Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to the podium during this month's GFB convention and tradeshow. Senate Bill 396 connects food banks directly with farmers to give more Georgians access to fresh food and vegetables." Kemp said the Georgia General Assembly invested $800,000 in the program for the current fiscal year, acknowledging outgoing Rep. Terry England, who chaired the House Appropriations Committee. GFB President Tom McCall delivered his annual address during the general session and discussed the significant changes Georgia farmers have seen in the past 85 years. "Our advancement in technology is mind-blowing from the early days of steelwheeled tractors, like my granddaddy bought new in 1934, to tractors that drive themselves using Global Positioning System satellites. Technology has improved our lives and made us more efficient and productive." McCall said. "It's hard to grasp what agriculture may look like in 85 years, but I believe strongly that Georgia Farm Bureau must continue our work in making it better, just like those original farmers did for us." The delegates also honored Black, who is completing 12 years as Georgia commissioner of agriculture and heard from Commissioner of Agriculture-elect Tyler Harper. Black began his career at Georgia Farm Bureau as its Young Farmers and Ranchers coordinator, then led the Georgia Agribusiness Council before being elected ag commissioner in 2010. McCall presented Black with an honorary lifetime membership in recognition of his contributions to Georgia agriculture. With his usual dry wit, Black shared lessons from serving in and running for public office. These lessons included: being prepared to work hard once you're in office and See GEORGIA FARM BUREAU, page 10 GDA launches newly designed website next month Please deliver this paid subscription to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Black, Commissioner By Jay Jones jay.jones@arg.georgia.gov The new year will bring a new look to the Georgia Department of Agriculture online with a complete redesign of the department's website, www.agr.georgia.gov, which promises to be more accessible and easier to navigate across different devices. The change to the new design is scheduled for the first week of January, which will be the first significant redesign of the GDA website since 2011. William Rutherford, GDA chief information officer, explained the age of the current website is evident in how information is organized. "This is a long overdue project, and we are excited to give our citizens and customers a new, improved avenue to communicate with the department and gain knowledge regarding our programs," Rutherford said. The current website is organized more like an organizational chart; visitors need to know which GDA division does the service they are looking for, like licensing or food recall announcements. The new design was done with customer experience as a priority, according to Maris Wynn, GDA information technology manager. "The focus for this new design is for our customers to get the information they need as quickly as possible," Wynn said. The current website has drop-down menus that list the 18 GDA divisions. The new website will reorganize the divisions into six service areas Animals, Food and Fuel, Plants and Soil, Pest Control, Agribusiness, and Ag Programs along with a News/ About menu. GDA Information Technology Division partnered with Mediacurrent, a web development and design company based in Alpharetta, Ga., to create the new website. IT managers and Mediacurrent surveyed GDA employees and customers to find the essen- The Georgia Department of Agriculture will launch a new website in January to replace the current website that has been in use since 2011. Along with a new modern look, the website will present information based on services offered for easy and quick access. (GDA/Nick Vassy) tial needs of everyone using the website. The survey results showed that the largest use of the public visiting the GDA website is licensing, so a link to the Licensing Division is at the top of the home page. The link to licensing will be on every page of the website. The web designers also looked at the websites of other state departments of agriculture to get a sense of what functions worked and could be applied to the GDA website. The Market Bulletin page will also get a makeover. Subscribers will access their account page with a "Subscriber Login" button at the top of the screen. Three other buttons offer visitors choices to advertise, subscribe and renew their subscription. The login page will remain the same, along with content pages to search, place ads and view electronic versions of the current issue and Bulletin See GDA NEW WEBSITE, page 10 PAGE 2 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2022 Advertise in the Market Bulletin Classified advertisements in the Market Bulletin are free to subscribers and limited to one ad per issue per subscriber number. While the classic signs of uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, or pain in the center of the chest will quickly compel you to visit the emergency room, heart attacks do not always present this. Moreover, about 1 in 5 heart attacks are silent, meaning the person is unaware that damage has occurred. Silent heart attacks are especially prevalent in women, who are more likely to experience less common signs of heart attack. Being unaware of these subtle signs can lead to a delay in life-saving treatment and worse outcomes. Some of the signs of a heart attack that are more common in women include: Chest pain or pressure: Chest pain or pressure is the most common symptom of a heart attack in women. Dull ache in the chest: Instead of a sharp and sudden pain in the chest, heart attacks can feel more like a dull ache in the chest. Pain in the arm: Chest pain or pressure is typically accompanied by pain that radiates down the left arm, but it can include both arms. Back or jaw pain: Stress to your heart can be felt in your back or jaw. It may be your heart if you have a backache or jaw pain unrelated to any apparent injury. Shortness of breath: If you feel out of breath while doing activities that generally would not cause you to breathe hard, it could signify a heart attack. Nausea and vomiting: While nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of many illnesses, they can also signify a heart attack in some women. Women often attribute these symptoms to acid reflux, the flu, or normal aging. However, when it comes to heart attacks, every second counts. Heart attacks occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your heart muscle. Consequently, your heart cannot get the oxygen it needs to pump blood to the rest of your body. The longer the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen, the more likely the damage will be permanent. Irreversible damage from a heart attack begins within 30 minutes of the blockage. This damage can cause lifelong disability and overall lower quality of life. Therefore, it is vital to seek medical attention as soon as you suspect a heart attack. It is also equally important to work to reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack. Start by eating a well-balanced diet that incorporates a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and healthy protein sources. Additionally, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily, and avoid smoking. Adopting a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and not smoking can reduce the risk of heart attack by up to 90 percent. For more information on how to prevent heart disease, visit www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/. Georgia Farm Bureau: Celebrating 85 years, honoring Gary Black Continued From Page 1 taking responsibility for everything that happens in the office you lead. "You own everything. Not your staff, not your spokesperson, and not your political spokesperson," Black said. Black also told delegates another important lesson: trying not to lose is the enemy of winning. "Playing defense is the opposite of winning," he said. "The future will demand that we all step up." Harper said agriculture has great potential and is an exciting time for the state's farmers despite the challenges they face. Harper, a seventh-generation farmer from Irwin County, touted some of agriculture's biggest legislative victories: the Georgia Agricultural Tax Exemption and the Freedom to Farm Act. He stressed that constituent engagement would be key to pushing forward to support Georgia's farmers in other ways. "We've got to work that together to ensure that agriculture continues to thrive, to ensure that your business and your industry every day continues to thrive," Harper said, "We can do that as a team." Harper celebrated Georgia's establishment of elementary school agricultural education programs. He noted that Georgia is the first state with ag education available from kindergarten to adulthood, a crucial effort to ensure that agricultural businesses can thrive and that consumers understand the origins of their food. In support of education, Harper said it's also essential to continue the expansion of broadband internet availability. Harper closed by emphasizing agriculture as a national security issue. American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall touched on supporting the military, surviving trade wars and the COVID-19 pandemic, waters of the U.S. regulation, labor, input costs, California's Proposition 12 and mental health issues. Looking ahead, Duvall said one of the biggest challenges is that almost half of Congress 260 representatives and senators is either new or has been in office less than four years and has never been part of writing a farm bill. Duvall emphasized that while AFBF can make contacts and present the organization's stance on policy issues, the real power lies in members contacting their members of Congress and sharing how the farm bill has helped them. "They need to know you are the geniuses, you are the experts," he said. "You are the ones they need to hear it from. Because when you tell them that story because when we're engaged with Farm bureau at that level, we can make things happen." GDA New Website: New website to offer quicker, easier access to information Continued From Page 1 archives. The new webpage design is also an opportunity to up- grade online services. GDA Webmaster Tim Van Valkenburg said the new website design would be mobile phone friendly. Rather than being a miniature version of the desk- top webpage, the new website will adapt to a mobile phone orientation for easier use on the small screen. The search engine is a less prominent feature but still significant in navigating the new website. The current search feature is a Google product that will pull up search items from the GDA website and pages from other websites. Valkenburg said that the new search engine would pull information only from the GDA website. "A big plus for me is the search engine," Valkenburg said. "It will search the GDA site exclusively." Sutherland ripped out the back seat of his car to deliver eggs wholesale to customers. Bonnie Wilson said her grandfather got to know his customers very well, which she believed was vital in keeping the business going. She added that the same friendly service is still essential today. "That is how we grew from eggs to chickens, cheese, turkeys, and then into the grocery business. One of our customers said, `Y'all already do a good job for us this way; we need a new supplier for this. Are you interested?'" Wilson said. "That is what we try to look at every day. How can we make it better for this community, our team members, our customers and our vendors." Today, Sutherland's has about 77 employees and runs distribution out of the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park. The business has stayed in the family. A.W. started it as Sutherland's Produce. J.E. "Gene" Sutherland, Sr. worked for his father at the start, and he became president when his father retired in the 1970s. The company became Sutherland's Foodservice in the 1990s to reflect the company's expanded product line. Gene's children run the company today: Gene, Jr. is president, with his sisters Bonnie Wilson and Connie Hopkins as vice presidents. Sutherland's also shares its history with the Atlanta Farmers Market. The company started just down the street from the market's original location in downtown Atlanta. They followed the market when it moved to the Murphy Triangle at Murphy Avenue and Sylvan Road in southwest Atlanta in 1941. The company moved to its current location in Forest Park, with the new market opened in 1958. Sutherland's started out selling eggs, and their first customer was Kroger. They expanded to poultry, produce, meats, packaged foods Andrew and Lucy Sutherland founded their company in 1947 near the corner of Trinity Ave. and Washington St., just down the street from the original Atlanta State Farmers Market. (Special Photo) and other products and delivered to restaurants and grocery stores across Georgia and neighboring states. Gene Sutherland, Sr. was well-known across Georgia and in his community. He was recognized for his leadership in the poultry and egg industry and was inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2011. He served on the state boards such as the Agricultural Exposition Authority, which oversees the Georgia National Fairgrounds and locally as a member of the governing boards of Woodward Academy and Piedmont College. Gene, Jr. said his father could get along with anyone he met and was willing to help. Bonnie said the "why not?" approach her father developed through the years was part From left to right: Bonnie Wilson, Gene Sutherland, Jr. and Connie Hopkins, operate Sutherland's Foodservice, their family-owned business, located at the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park. The company was founded by their grandfather, A.W. Sutherland, and run for many years by their father, J.E. "Gene" Sutherland, Sr. (Special Photo) of the company's success. "He had so many different resources to draw from and be a resource to other people," Bonnie said. "When people thought about things, they would say, `Let's call Gene and see if Sutherland's can do it," she said. "We're thankful for that because every time our business grew in a big leap, it was usually from somebody we knew, a customer we already had who wanted us to handle something new for them." Bonnie, Connie and Gene said working for their father at the farmers market growing up helped them learn about the business and appreciate hard work. "He was pretty tough on us, but that's how he built the business. You have got to be here working. It took hard work and still does today," Gene said. "This is a hands-on business. There's just no other way around it. You talk about farming; that is kind of what we are doing. We're just doing it up here on the concrete." For the future, they said it comes back to what their grandfather and father did to start and build the business: hard work and serving customers with a personal touch. Gene said they instill those qualities in their employees. "We try to keep our employees engaged, not just with us. We want them engaged with our customers," Gene said. "They (our customers) can always get us, but if they can't, our employees have that personal touch with them, and there's something to be said of that," Gene said. "At a lot of places, you're a number, and we don't want that. If we treated customers like a number, then we wouldn't still be in business. People still want that personal service."
