A CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR Saturday, June 9, 2018 11:00 A.M. THANKFUL BAPTIST CHURCH 302 Walker Street Augusta, Georgia 30901 Pastor Christopher J. Waters, Officiating Reverend Kip B. Banks, Sr., Eulogist The Obituary TRACY EVANS WILLIAMS, JR. was born to Tracy Evans Williams, Sr. and Mamie D. Williams in Augusta, Georgia on Lebruary 16,1932. He entered into rest on June 3,2018. Tracy grew up in Augusta on Milledgeville Road with his sisters, Katherine, Mamie, and Dollie who affectionately called him Fluffy, a nickname which later evolved into Fuffy. At an early age, he was baptized at the historic Thankful Baptist Church. As a teenager, Tracy worked in the grocery store founded by his grandfather, Robert Williams, and subsequently owned by his father. He delivered groceries by bicycle to customers throughout Augusta s Turpin Hill area and the surrounding neighborhoods. These early work experiences and exposure to his fathers business, and the generosity shown to customers during the lean World War II years, seeded a lifelong appreciation for hard work, financial acumen, and community service. After graduating from Augustas Haines Normal and Industrial Institute as Salutatorian of the Class of 1949, he attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. He later completed advanced study in math and physics at Hampton Institute in Virginia and in 1970, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Supervision and Administration from Atlanta University. Tracy began a thirty'five-year career in education at Waynesboro High School in Waynesboro, Georgia, where he was a math and physics classroom teacher. He returned to Augusta in 1956 and began teaching at the newly opened A.R. Johnson Junior High School. That year he also married his high school prom date, the former and late Willarena Marguerite Lamar, and from their union, sprang a large and loving family of seven children. Together for forty-three years, Tracy and Willarena, also an educator, shared an intellectual kinship, educated their children, and created a warm and welcoming home environment focused on spiritual and academic pursuits, discipline, personal responsibility, love, and family fun. In 1964, Tracy was named assistant principal at the newly opened T.W. Josey High School. In 1976, he was named principal at Tubman Junior High School, remaining there until his retirement in 1991. In the Augusta community, which he loved dearly, Tracy was involved with many social, civic, and political organizations, including the Alpha Phi Alpha and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternities, the NAACP, the Boy Scouts, the Ambassadors Bridge Club, and several local governmental and community boards and committees, including the Augusta Symphony Board, and the Shiloh Community Center Board. He was also an appointed member of the Board of Tax Assessors for Richmond County for over twenty-five years. Committed to seeking social justice and change through political involvement, Tracy worked on numerous political campaigns over the years, serving in advisory capacities and informal campaign manager and treasurer roles for candidates and elected officials at the local and state levels. During his retirement, he enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, keeping up with current affairs, writing opinion-editorial letters and columns for local newspapers, attending varied church services, gardening, yard work, traveling, and visiting with and mentoring his eleven grandchildren. He also loved preparing hearty breakfasts for family and friends, talking on the telephone, and reading several newspapers daily and books on his Kindle.
