Martin, Pastor - Officiating On Thursday morning, August 27, 2009, our heavenly father sent an angel and took one of his faithful servants to spend eternity with him. Edna Owens Upshaw was born on March 3, 1941 to the late James and Lurania Owens. At an early age, she joined the Second Baptist Church, Barnwell, South Carolina. She later joined Antioch Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia where she faithfully served until her illness. Edna was educated in the Barnwell Public School System. She received her Registered Nurse Diploma from Lamar University Hospital Class of 1965 and Masters of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner at Emory University School of Medicine. She was a Charter Member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., Phi Chi Chapter where she served as Tamias. She was sorority nurse of the year (1990-1991). She was Past Matron of the Star of the East, Chapter #1, Order of Eastern Star. She served as Antioch Baptist Church Sunday School Assistant Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher. She served on Medical Ministry, Courtesy Guild and AWIC Ministry. Edna was employed by University Hospital, Richmond County Public Health Department for thirty-two years, Charter River Behavorial Center for fourteen years, Youth Development Center for three years and Augusta State Medical Prison for three years. Edna will be lovingly remembered by three brothers, Johnny Owens, Rahway, New Jersey, Percy Owens and Thomas (Annie Mae) Owens, Barnwell, South Carolina; three aunts, Mazie Salley, Adanta, Georgia, Reverend Ollie M. Carter, Fruidand, Maryland and Elnora Terry, Salisbury, Maryland; one uncle, Sidney Owens, Delray Beach, Florida; four godchildren, Gale Waring, Gerald White, Tamitha Kelsey and Myleta Eldridge; special niece and nephew, Cathy (Reverend Harris) Barker, Barnwell, South Carolina and Larry (Lariesa) James, Fayetteville, North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. favorite Scriptures Psalm 37:27 I have been young, a n d now a m old; yet have I not seen the righteousforsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
