 Obituary 
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 
Deacon Vernon Thomas, Sr. departed this life on October 16, 2005, at the Medical College of Georgia. He was born on May 13, 1916, in McDuffie County to the late James and Mary Bell Thomas. 
Vernon was married to the late Mildred Thomas. To this union four children were born. One Daughter, Georgia Mae Tho mas, preceded him in death. 
After moving to Augusta, Vernon was united with the Second Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where he served faithfully until his health failed. He was ordained a Deacon in 1962 under the leadership of Rev. W. D. Morman. Vernon was the first presi dent of the Brotherhood. He also was a member of the Male Cho rus, Combined Choir, and May Birthmonth Club. His humble, meek and kind spirit, guided him to his dedication to the commu nity of Augusta. 
Vernon founded Thomas &. Sons Commercial Iron Works. He was a pioneer, an entrepreneur, a visionary, and a great inspiriation to young people. His commitment to his work can be appreciated in the many beautiful pieces of ironwork that can be seen around the Augusta community and surrounding areas. 
He will be greatly missed by his family, his church, and community. He was a devoted father. He leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, Vernon (Romona) Thomas, Jr., Union, NJ and Lonnie "Youngblood" (Debra Ann) Thomas, Little Ferry, NJ; one daughter, Georgene Thomas, Augusta, GA; six grandchildren, Suzanne Thomas, Dawn Thomas, and Vernon Thomas, III, all of Union, NJ, Ronald Keith March, Augusta, GA, Corley Bradley, Newark, NJ, and Jeffery Thomas, Inglewood, NJ; six great-grand children; devoted niece, Christine Jones; special friends, The Gre gory and Caper Families; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

has come and bid me go with Him beyond the skies. I could not stop 
 
to tell you, Your faces no longer will I see. I did not know how 
 
quickly, My God would send for me. I could not even linger, There 
 
was no time at all. The time had come, no choice had I, But to 
 
answer my God's call. Don't even stop to wonder, Why I could not
