Mother Mary Shipp was born to parents, Lewis Wright and Annie Smith Wright in Bushes,
South Carolina, known as Old Ellenton, South Carolina. There were seven children born in this
family. She received her early education in the public schools of Augusta, Georgia, where she
lived for a while with her eldest sister after the death of her parents. She later went to Sardis,
Georgia, to live with her sister, Sarah, and she grew up with her two nieces, Maria and Janie. Her
sister was a teacher, so she decided to follow in her footsteps.
She was a member of Zion A.M.E. Church where she taught Sunday School in Sardis, Georgia.
In 1937, she graduated from Screven County High School in Sylvania, Georgia. She attended Fort
Valley State College and taught school for a period of time after receiving her teaching degree.
In 1942, she met Harry Shipp. They got married and lived in Atlanta, Georgia for a short period
and then moved to New York, New York, where they lived for forty years. Although there were
no biological children, Harry and Mary nurtured many young people and loved them as their
own.
She decided to become a nurse because she loved to help people. She graduated from the Central
School of Nursing in 1961. She worked for the New York City Department of Hospitals in the
Labor and Delivery Department.
While in New York City, she and her husband were members of Morrisania Baptist Church. In
1983, she and her husband retired and moved to Augusta, Georgia. In looking for a church family,
her sister Victoria Johnson, introduced her to her church, Friendly Church Of God In Christ,
where Mother Shipp later became a member.
Mother Shipp, as she was affectionally known, was an active and faithful member until her
health declined. The Friendly Church family has always been dear to her heart. She worked for
a while in Hospitality. She was a member of the Mothers In Zion Choir. She worked in the Fine
Arts Prayer Room and in 2011, she received the Northern Georgia Second Fine Arts Beacon of
Excellence Award for her work.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memories: cousins, multi generational nieces and nephews, many
children she considered as her own and their children, and a whole host of loving friends.
Remember, Mother Shipp would always leave us with these parting words Keep God's
commandments! Her favorite scripture was Now unto Him who is able to do exceeding and abundantly
above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us. - Ephesians 3:20

Life is but a stopping place
A pause in whats to be
A resting place along the way
To sweet eternity
We all have different paths
Along the way
We were meant to learn somethings
But we were never meant to stay
Our destination is a place
For greater than we know
For some of us the journey is quicker
For some the journey is slow
When the journey is over
We reach the heavenly shore
We will claim a great reward
And find an everlasting place
As we gather with our Lord.

Words are inadequate to express the love and thoughtfulness you all have shown our
Aunt and our Mother Shipp. It was a source of comfort to know that she was cared for
and immensely loved and was never alone.
