JLtu/ie. iok 29:1 1 (NIV) OBITUARY Bro. Calvin Shipman, Jr. entered this world on October 30, 1947. He was the 2nd child of 9 children bom to Bro. Calvin Shipman, Sr. and the late Sis. Alberta Stallings Shipman. He was raised in Augusta, Georgia. At an early age he was taught the importance of tmsting in the Lord. As a result, in God's time, Calvin accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He attended Lucy Laney High School and Graduated in 1965. Calvin enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He was employed by the Medical College of Georgia in the Custodial department. Everyone who knew Calvin knew he was blessed by the Lord with a phenomenal gift of Culinary Skills. He was a member of Hale Street Baptist Church where he actively worked with the Men's Fellow ship and the Sunday School Ministry; and was the official "Church Chef' for 14 years. By his definition, `church chef'meant this was his method of living out the passage of scripture that says "when you've done it unto the least of them you have done it unto me (the Lord)" (Matt. 25:40). If someone was sick, he cooked for them. If there was a church event of any kind, he cooked. When he catered special events, he added an extra food item just to give the event just that special touch. He helped those who were "cooking challenged" by preparing items for their special dinner such as Macaroni and Cheese and Dressing. He never tried to take the credit. He was proud to help anyone that he could. To him, that was living out the Greatest Command "love your neighbor as yourself' (Matt. 19:19). Even as his health began to fail, he continued to serve the Lord and his church faith fully. He personified the passage of scripture that states we must "...work with our hands," (1 Thes. 4:11). He worked faithfully and tirelessly. This love was not limited to his church family or the community at large. He showered that love immensely upon all the members of his family. Yet, God knew that he had done all he could do. His body was failing and the time had come for him to take his flight. Early Friday Morning, July 16, 2010, he joined his mother and other relatives with the Lord. He leaves to celebrate joyful memories a vast family: Two daughters, LaYneeta(Michael) Shipman-Mills, Fresno, CA, Felicia Shipman, Augusta; grandson, Rand DeShazier, Fresno, CA; father, Calvin Shipman, Sr., Augusta; five sis ters, Thelma S. Patrick, Rosa Shipman, Gloria S. (Steve) Jarrell, Augusta; Brenda S. (Marlon) Maxey, Betty S. (Bruce) Hammond, Hephzibah; three brothers, Clarence Shipman, Charles Shipman, and Nathan Shipman all of Hephzibah; very special friend, Shannee Thomas; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.
