Gwendolyn Anita Coleman Rountree was born on December 27, 1943 to Elijah Joseph Coleman and Pleasant Davis Coleman in Montgomery County (Uvalda), Georgia. She never experienced the joy of being in kindergarten, first or second grade. She started her first day of school in 3rd grade and later received her high school diploma as an honor graduate from the Montgomery County High School in Mt. Vernon, Georgia. She prepared herself to offer service to the education profession by completing requirements for the following: a B. S. degree from Fort Valley State College in the field of elementary education; certification in administration and supervision from the University of Georgia; a Master's (M. Ed.) degree in Middle Grades and a Specialist's (Ed. S.) degree in administration and supervision from Augusta College; and she completed coursework leading to a doctoral degree in educational administration from South Carolina State University. Her teaching experience included elementary, middle and secondary grade levels in the Columbia County and Richmond County school districts. She served as an instructional lead teacher and elementary school principal in Richmond and McDuffie County school systems, respectively. She served as assistant superintendent for Human Resources in the McDuffie County School District. Ms. Rountree was a 1992 finalist for the Georgia Association of Educators Outstanding Administrators Award; Augusta College's 1982 Outstanding Graduate Student for the School of Education; selected as the 1979 Woman of the Year and 1978 Citizen of the Year by the Augusta Branch of the National Association of University Women. She was elected Chairperson of the Georgia Teacher Education Council in 1981-82 and President of the Georgia Staff Development Council in 1996-97. In 1981 she was appointed by the Governor of Georgia to the Consolidation of Education Programs Advisory Committee and in 1981-85 the Georgia Board of education appointed her to the Georgia Professional Practices Commission. She served on numerous local, state and national committees, commissions and boards of directors. She served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Delta House, Inc. and was an original incorporator of the Delta House, Inc. In December 2001, she was recognized in New Orleans, LA for completing two three-year terms on the Elementary Commission for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools - an accrediting agency for 11 southern states. While serving on the Commission, she represented the state of Georgia on the Central Reviewing Committee. Ms. Rountree is listed among the 2002 International Who's Who of Public Service. In 1987, as president, she led the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to purchase the home of Mrs. Lucy Craft Laney for the purpose of establishing a Museum of Black History and Conference Center Obituary Cont As a member of the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she served as president, 2nd vice president, parliamentarian and chairperson the Founders Day Committee. She also was active in the Thomson Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She has been very active over the years holding offices on the local, state and national levels. Additionally, she completed the training of trainers for Membership Intake and Collegiate Advisor. Ms. Rountree was a member of the Georgia School Superintendents Association where she was accepted into the Superintendent's Professional Development Program which is a training program for school superintendents. Ms. Rountree served on the board for Central Savannah River Area Economic Opportunity Authority (CSRA). She enjoyed reading and was the fastest reader imaginable. Therefore, it is not surprising to know that she was a board member for Augusta-Richmond County Public Library. After all is said and done, only what you do for Christ will last. Ms. Rountree was a devout Christian, the epitome of a true servant for Jesus Christ, who enjoyed bible study, Sunday school and being active in church. She joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Uvalda, Georgia at age 10. There she was very active in the Sunday School and B.T.U. until she moved away. She was a member of the Hudson Memorial C.M.E. Church in Augusta, Georgia. At Hudson Memorial CME, she served as church secretary, church musician and choir director, member of the Board of Trustees, superintendent of Sunday School, and director of Christian Education. She enjoyed being a missionary and was humble and ecstatic to receive the title as International Missionary for the CME churches.
