Mrs. Janie Mae King Norman was born in Wilkes County, Georgia, May 24,1916, to Junk and 
Mamie Burns King. She departed this life on July 19, 1988. 
Mrs. Norman was formally educated in the Wilkes County School System. She later taught 
there until she moved to Augusta, Georgia. 
At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined the Hilliard Station Baptist Church, 
Washington, Georgia. 
She later married the late Dea. Silas Norman, Sr., June 29,1940. The couple made their home 
in Augusta, Georgia. Soon after moving to Augusta, Mrs. Norman united with the Mt. Calvary 
Baptist Church, Rev. E. A. Moss, Pastor. 
As a member of the church, Mrs. Norman was very active and worked in several capacities. 
She served as the churchs Financial Secretary, Financial Secretary of the Deaconess Board, 
Recording Secretary of the Sr. Mission and the Club #3. She was a member of the Mt. Calvarians 
Choir, the May Birth Month Club and Sunday School. She also sang in the Walker Baptist 
Association Chorus. 
Mrs. Normans parents, Mamie and Junk King, did not have much money or formal 
education, but they believed God, education, and community service were keys for living. 
Through that faith, they inspired and nurtured their children. Mrs. Norman lived that legacy. 
With quiet strength, she instilled those values in her children. Therefore, she is immortalized 
through the quality of their lives and their contributions to society. They are distinguished by their 
Christian service and community involvement; that each of her children has an advanced college 
degree is a tribute to her hope, love and hard work. 
Those left to celebrate the quality of her life include her five children: George Edward 
Norman of Detroit, Mi., V. Elaine Norman Sturkey of Augusta, Ga., James Howard Norman of 
Lansing, Mi., Dr. Jessye Norman of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Dea. Dr. Silas Norman, Jr. of 
Grass Lake, Mi.; seven grandchildren: James Howie Norman, Jr. of Lansing, Mi., Brian 
Emerson, Kristian Valdis and Raymond Nu Shum Sturkey of Augusta, Ga., Michael Edward, 
Joseph Wylie and Silas Prescod Norman of Detroit, Mi.; five sisters: Archbishop Mary Veronia 
Walton and Lizzie Huff of Atlanta, Ga., Louise Lindsey of Washington, D.C., Mamie Hill of 
Washington, Ga. and Lila Knox of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother: Marion King of Washington, 
Ga.; many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. 
Like Paul, Mrs. Normans valedictory is: 
I have fought the good fight, I have finished 
the race, I have kept the faith. 
Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of 
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous 
Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not 
to me only but also to all who have loved His 
appearing.
