Not to know life at the heights, is to su ffe r an im proverishing incom pleteness. X.L. knew no incom pleteness in pursuing life as a Christian, an educator, a loving husband and an understanding and indulgent friend to m ankind. The son of Calvin Neal (a baptist m in iste r) and Ju lia H. Neal of Okm ulgee, Oklahom a, it appeared a foregone conclusio n th a t he w o u ld fo llo w his fa th e r and become a leader in the church. His scientific inclinations and m athem atical acuity, instead, led him to pursue his love fo r chem istry. He enrolled at M orehouse College and majored in Chem istry, pursued fu rth e r graduate study at A tlanta University and received a Pharmaceutical Chemist degree from M eharry Medical College. Despite his profession al practice of pharm acy, X.L. found the tim e to teach and inspire high school students in ch e m istry and to fo llo w them into college w here he sim ultaneo usly taught at Spelman, M orehouse and the A tlanta University sum m er school. His heart yearned to be involved in the enrichm ent of the lives of young men, for living. Encouraged by John W esley Dobbs to become a Prince Hall Mason w ith m em bership in the W. C. Thom as Lodge N um ber 11 2, X.L. did ju s t that, in p u rsu it of his personal fu lfillm e n t. He fo u n d the tim e to w o rk his w ay up the M asonic ladder and became Deputy Grand M aster, Prince Hall Masons, Jurisdiction of Georgia. Upon the death of the illustrious John W esley Dobbs, in 1961, X.L. w as elevated by the Jurisdiction of Georgia to its highest position, Grand M aster at the next meeting of the Grand Lodge. The Grand Lodge Trestle board was laid out im m ediately w ith Neal's plans for carrying fo rw a rd the w o rk of his precedessor, in expanding the influen ce of Prince Hall M asonry w ith in the state, attracting the best talent available for leadership training and supporting the though tful initiative s of the sisters of the Eastern Star. Upon his retirem ent in 1990, tw o hundred nineteen (219) lodges w ere in good standing w ith more than 22,000 active members, throughout the Jurisdiction of Georgia. X.L. looked at life from the tree-top level, alw ays seeking the vantage point of the largest opportunity, to do good. This quiet and gentle man made contributions of rare quality as high school and college faculty member, fraternal leader and friend. His life w hich spanned more than four scores of this century has been a continuing source of inspiration.
