Velma Jones Lawrence was bom on October 30, 1930, to Mrs. Clara Winters Jones and the late Caesar Jones. She entered into eternal rest Friday, December 9, 1994. 
On June 6, 1963, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Danford Robert Lawrence. To this union was blessed a son, Mark G. Lawrence. 
At an early age, she was converted and baptized at Old Storm Branch Baptist Church in Clearwater, South Carolina under the leadership of the late Rev. R. B. Mabry. She continued her spiritual growth by chairing numerous church committees and remained active in the Missionary Society; Women World Day of Prayer, and the Storm Branch Association. Mrs. Lawrence was a strong supporter and advocate of the OSB Youth. Her advocacy efforts inspired many to pursue dreams of college as well as their self-fulfillment. 
Education was always a paramount importance to the Jones family. This belief transcended to Velma as she completed her early education at Haines Institute, Augusta, Georgia. Further pursuits of her education included the class of 1951 at Benedict College where she received her B.A. Degree. She furthered her studies in the Language Arts with receipt of her M.Ed.. from New York University in 1953. 
 
Mrs. Lawrence conveyed high ethical and moral standards through her educational and spiritual teachings till her retirement from the Richmond County School System in 1985. After her retirement, she remained an inspiration and mentor to the Benedict Alumni, the Retired Teacher's Association, State Youth Convention Delegation, Summer Enrichment Program(s), and all that she touched. Her love for religion was equaled only by her love for education. 
To her family she was a dedicated daughter, wife, and mother. As a friend she was unsurpassed. 
She leaves in her loving memory: a devoted husband of 31 years, Danford Lawrence; a son, Mark G. Lawrence; a loving mother, Clara Jones; a brother, Merlyn Jones; one sister, Mamie Jones; one god-daughter, Lawahnna Hairston; one god-son, Douglas Collins; a mother-in-law; Alice Lawrence, Newark, NJ; three nieces, Jackie Barker and Debbie Burke, both of Newark, NJ and Kim Jenerette, Conway, SC; four nephews, Stanford Lawrence, Melvin Lawrence, and Leon Lee, all of Newark, NJ and Thomas Lawrence, Raleigh, NC; two uncles, Sam Jones, Jr. and Rube Hankinson, Sr.; fifteen cousins, William Hankinson, Georgia Bullock, Barbara Westbrook, Sam Jones, III, all o f North Augusta, SC, Rube Hankinson, Jr., Dorothy Harris, Elridge Hankinson, all of Augusta, GA, Clara Jones, Des Moines, Iowa, Roberta Jenkins, Long Beach, CA, Carrie Hinton, New York, NY, Patricia Crawford, Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Carrington, West Palm Beach, FL, Sebelle Best, Ola Mae Page, Aiken, SC and Barbara Marshall, Beaufort, SC; and a host of other relatives and friends.
