He was born on April 14,1930, to Oscar and Georgie Lee Moore Kemp of Clearwater, South Carolina. He received his early education in the primary and elementary schools of the area. He was a 1948 graduate of Haines Industrial Institution in Augusta, GA Later he studied at Benedict College in Columbia, SC and earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology in 1953. He received a Master of Science from South Carolina State College and did additional studies at the University of Wisconsin. At an early age he joined the Old Storm Branch Baptist Church in Clearwater, SC where he was affiliated with the choir, usher board, bible study for youth and Memorial and Beautification Ministry. Later he was ordained as a deacon and served as Chairman of the Deacon Board during Reverend Irvins first years as pastor. For over fifty years he served as Superintendent of Sunday School and was still serving at the time of his death. He was a dedicated religious leader of Old Storm Branch serving with the Missionary Ministry, the Male Chorus, Sunday School teacher, and Bible study. His great love was the old sanctuary, The Beautiful Front,where he was baptized. His favorite quote was the motto inscribed over the pulpit Teaching Them to Observe All Things Whatsoever I Command You. He would repeat this every Sunday. Oscar Kemp was noted for his religious and comical Quotes... I would rather see a sermon any day than hear one Watch as well as pray Dont let your right hand know what your left hand does You dont want me to have to use this African Soup Bone God is going to bless you for taking care of old people. They that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up on wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 There is a time and place for all things. What time is it? - Its time to eat. \ Time waits for no man. Time is a factor. We have been fed a good meal it is now time to digest it \ \ Put a little sugar in the coffee In the late 50s he met the love of his life, Rubena Catherine Stoney of Barnwell, South Carolina. This acquaintance led to marriage of 57 years. And from this union was given one lovely daughter, Catrina Levetta. For many years Oscar taught school in Orangeburg and Aiken counties, retiring from Midland Valley High School after 38 years of teaching. He served as coordinator of Adult Education at Midland Valley. He was a member of Midland Valley Chamber of Commerce. Oscar was involved in many organizations of which he was a faithful member. He loved his Masonic Order'Simmons Lodge 571 and all other higher degrees of FAAY Masonry. -He was National Royal Arch High Priest for 4 years. He was the Grand (State) Recorder of Islam Temple Shriners of South Carolina for over 30 years. He traveled extensively with the Masons throughout the USA. 'He was a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was a member for over 50 years. 'Oscar served as the first President of color of the Midland Valley Lions Club. 'For more than 40 years he has served with the Aiken County Prison Ministry. 'He was honored by the Valley Public Service Authority for serving 41 years as a commissioner. 'He also has a well in the community named in his honor by VPSA Commissioners. In all of these meetings Oscar had good attendance. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Rubena Stoney Kemp; a daughter, Catrina (Larry) Jackson, Atlanta, Georgia; four grandchildren, Storme (Devontay) Hall, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Dejon Jackson, Jalin Jackson and Jaslyn Jackson, Atlanta, Georgia; one great grand child, Erin Hall, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; devoted nieces, Sheila Kemp Street, North Augusta, South Carolina, Diane White and Brenda Stoney, Lousiville, Kentucky; godchildren, Kedesha McClary, Fry Watson Suber, Vernon Bush, Sr., Kim Mendenhall Key, Natasha Brown, Brittany Kaprise Coach, Charles Garrett, Bryson Garrett, Nora Madison and Diane Barnes; best friends, Robert Curry, Elandus Mayes and Sam Moore. YOU WERE SENT FROM HEAVEN ABOVE. A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF Gods UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Now, God has called his angel home. Let us not weep and moan. Your gentle spirit wrapped us with warm joy. It is sad to see one of Gods soldiers deploy. We know that we will all see you again. Can someone tell us when? Let us celebrate your life, because You HAVE PUT UP A SPECTACULAR FIGHT.
