To live life to the fullest is a noble and beautiful manifestation of love of life, love of people, love for humanity..."For life and death are but one." 
The life of Mrs. Leola Dinkins Garrick was begun in Gadsden, S.C. She was born to the late Mr. David Dinkins and Mrs. Mary Ann Sims Dinkins. Also significant in her rearing were the late James and Susie Sims. 
At an early age she joined the St. Mark Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend J.B. Barber and maintained that membership unto death. Leola had a profound belief in God and served faithfully and diligently in the church. 
Institutions influencing her formal education included: Gadsden Elementary School; Burke High School, Charleston , S.C.; she received the Bachelor of Science degree from Allen University, Columbia, S.C.; and completed further studies at South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, S.C. 
Her professional career as an educator spanned more than three decades. She began teaching at Gadsden Elementary School, and later taught at Crossroads and Webber Elementary School, all located in the Lower Richland community. She remained a first grade teacher at Webber until her retirement. Her awards for teaching excellence include the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award at Webber Elementary School for 1975-76. 
Mrs. Garrick was a dedicated and active member of the St. Mark Baptist Church for more than half a cen tury. Christian leadership and service provided her with her life's fulfillment. Throughout the years Mrs. Garrick served in various capacities within the church. Among those were Chairperson of the Deaconess Board, Secretary of the Missionary Society #1, and the Pulpit Aid Club. She was a founding member of the Education Ministry, serving many years as chairperson. During her tenure she initiated the Walk-A-Thon fundraiser to provide financial assistance for students seeking post secondary education. Under her lead ership, the St. Mark Baptist Church Tutorial program began. 
She was affiliated with several other professional and civic organizations which included: Richland County Education Association, South Carolina Education Association, National Education Association; and the Allen University Alumni Association. 
Leola leaves in the triumph of her death her husband of forty-three years, Roosevelt Garrick, Sr.; Six sons, Roosevelt Garrick, Jr.(Cynthia) of Columbia, Ronald E. Garrick(Gloria) of Charlotte, NC, Kevin L. Garrick (Leticia) of Clinton, NJ, David E. Garrick(Shana) of Columbia, Larry B. Garrick(Shelley) of Jacksonville, FL, and Tracy T. Garrick of Johnson City, TN; three brothers, Ben Dinkins,Sr. of Gadsden, Jimmie Dinkins(JoAnn) of Columbia, and Willie Dinkins of Gadsden; One sister, Mrs. Inez Belton(Charles) of Columbia, six sister-in-laws, Suzanna R. Dinkins, Carrie Shivar, Dorcas Brown, Lillie Garrick, Martha Moore, Naomi Garrick; two brother-in-laws Jacob Garrick, Doctor Garrick; five grandsons Christopher, Jonathan, Joshua, Roderick and Ryan; An aunt Irene S. Harris of Gadsden and two uncles Frank Ginlack of Orlando, FL and Eddie L. Sims of Gadsden. Two siblings preceded her death, David Dinkins, Jr. and Jackie Dinkins; and one grandson preceded her in death, Reginald S. Garrick.
