M r. Saint-Paul Gaffney, Sr., was born on September 9, 1928, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. On Thursday, De cember 13, 2001, he went home to be with the Lord. 
I Ie was a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he served on the Trustee Board. He was a retired Barber from the Veterans Administration Medical Center, and the owner o f Gaffney's Barber Shop located in Augusta, until his death. 
Saint-Paul was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. 
1le leaves to cherish his memories: a loving wife, Lorine B. Gaffney, Augusta, Georgia; one daughter, Sherrie G. (LaMar) Hill, of I Iephzibah, Georgia; two sons, Saint-Paul (Sheryl) Gaffney, Jr., Augusta, Georgia and Thomas Michael (Judy) Gaffney, Augusta, Georgia; five sisters, Catherine Hicks, Asheville, North Carolina, Christine Jefferies, Atlanta, Geor gia, Fannie Roseboro, Spartanburg, South Carolina, Loise Smith, Cincinnati, Ohio and Rachel Styles, Detroit, Michi gan; one brother, George (Vern) Byrd, Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren, three nieces and eight nephews; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

"Guiding `Jight" 
My father rarely labored with words, but often without him knowing, I would hear in his breaths how determined he was to mend together his wages to build something more than words could express. While still a lad, although I could not fully compre hend or appreciate the usefulness o f his hands, I would often seek his advice to help guide my own vessel against the morbid shortcomings that sometimes drift into our paths. Often there are subtleties in life, whose book value is o f infinite magnitude; and now as the sands o f time descend, 1 have found that there are those worth even more. As 1 pass through the portals o f time which lead me to my own passage o f adulthood, I now realize that the sweat mingled with dirt and determination was more than what, most had always seen. Although he was not thought o f as the captain, he had mastered the art o f navigation, and as with the game o f sports, he saw the field much better than others. It was more than one score plus ten before I realized that my father not only helped design my ship, but more importantly he plotted my course. As time passes, I too find myself the captain o f my own vessel, with passengers who at times seek understanding and guidance. When there are days that I am without a compass, and sunounded by unfamiliar seas, I remember when my father's hands engulfed my own, guiding me through storms that were merely showers passing by. Realizing the full value o f his wisdom, I now wonder if his thoughts were like mine. I wonder if he hides from the pain o f sometime not knowing as I do. It is then that I realize that often our courses are not all planned for us, but instead, like some recipes; we must create them from scratch and with what we have. 1 now understand that a person cannot complete this journey alone, although there are those who have. Instead we should spend more time with those we love. We must be therefor guidance to make sense o f it all.
