Church Family Life Center * JUNE 17, 1925 - FEBRUARY 6, 2011 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. II Timothy 4:6-8 OLIN "JAP" DORSEY, JR. entered into rest at Eisenhower Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA on February 6, 2011 at the age of 85. He was the sixth of eight children, born to the late Olin Dorsey and Annie Lou Jennings Dorsey. He was born on June 17, 1925 in Harlem, Columbia County, GA, where he was raised on the farm and did his early schooling. Jap accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at a young age at New Holt Missionary Baptist Church. There, he was very active as a boy and later served as a deacon for many years. He loved his church and church family. In later years, he attended as often as his health permitted. Deacon Dorsey was very knowledgeable about the Word of God, and didn't mind sharing it. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1943, where he served with honor for 30 years. He fought in three wars, received many honors, to include two Purple Hearts. Command Sergeant Major Dorsey retired at Fort Stewart, GA in 1973. He went on to work at University Hospital for over 10 years as a supervisor in their security force. He managed a large vegetable farm for many years. Jap loved to share his fresh harvest with neighbors, family and ______________ _____ _______________ J --------------------------------------- friends. He was a hardworking man, and always made sure that he provided for his family. Jap married his lovely bride, Mattie Leona Phoenix, on July 8, 1946. Together, they had 8 children: Olin (Julie) Dorsey; Keith (Maggie) Dorsey; Michael V. Dorsey (deceased); Leonard C. Dorsey (deceased), Margaret (Johnny) McCord; Kelvin (Delphyne) Dorsey; Patricia Cummings (deceased); Bruce Dorsey; and one daughter-in-love: MaeDella Perry. Along with his devoted wife of 64 years, "Lona," and their children, he leaves to cherish his memory two sisters: Wilhemenia Brown and Thelma Brown; 11 grandchildren: Kendra (Donald), Olivia (George), Michael (Myisha), Charles, Daniel, David, Andre, Kelvin, Jr., Chad, Alexis, and Jaleen; 5 great-grandchildren: Kaalynn, Jordyn, Joshua, Jaida and Morgan; 3 godchildren: Pamela, Emanuel and Rudolph; two grand-dogs: Rumble and Poppy; a great-grand-dog: Ziggy; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and three children, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Osie Stephenson, Sarah Bryant, Rita Frye, Loraine Foster; one brother: Henry Dorsey; and one grandson: Nicolas Dorsey. Jap touched the lives of so many people. He will be remembered as a caring, loving and generous man. He had such a way about himself that when he spoke, people listened. He was a man of few words who loved the life and game of solitaire. He gave so much of himself to others and now, God has called him from service to reward, "thou good and faithful servant." My dear family and friends, Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep I am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glints in the snow I am the sunlight on the ripened grain I am the gentle autumn rain When you awaken in the mornings, Hush... I am the swift, upflinging rush O f quiet birds in circling flight I am the soft, star shine at night Do not stand at my grave and cry I am not there. I did not die. -MARY FRYE, AUTHOR With Love, Jap / D addy / Grandpa Michael Dorsey Charles Dorsey Daniel Dorsey David Dorsey Andre Dorsey Kelvin Dorsey, Jr. Chad Dorsey Jaleen Dorsey V.
