** OBITUARY ** Mrs. Mary J. Bennett Cummings was the daugher of the late Mattie L. Germany and Henry E. Bennett. She was born on July 24, 1898, one of six children. She departed her life on Monday, January 8, 1990. Mrs. Cummings graduated with honors from the Walker Baptist Institute in 1917, and attended Hampton Institute. She was a teacher at the Walker Baptist Institute for many years. Mrs. Cummings, the oldest member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, was baptized the first Sunday in June of 1910 by Rev. C. T. Walker. She was a devout Christian, an ardent supporter of the church, was active in many church organizations and served in various capacities. She was secretary of the Missionary Society for over fifty years. Other affiliations have included: the Retirees/Senior Citizens Club, the July Birth Month Club, President of the Baptist Training Union, the Choir, and the Sunday School. On June 11,1925, MaryJ. Bennett and AndrewJ. Cummings were married. To this union two children were born. Her husband preceded her in death. Mrs. Cummings was active in many community organizations and activities. These have included District #16-F.A.A.Y. Masons, Heroines of Jericho, M.A.M., Golden Leaf Court #28, Walker Pilgrim Progress Society #1, Church Women United, Cummings Missionary Circle-Springfield Baptist Church, President-Silas X. Floyd Elementary School P.T.A., and member of P.T.A. Council. She was loved by many because of her warm, loving, caring spirit, and she inspired those she touched. Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Nellie C. Hampton, Little Rock, Arkansas and Mrs. Mamie C. Dunn, Augusta, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Mrs. Yana Nell H. Scott, Little Rock Arkansas, Mrs. Helen H. Barnes, New Orleans, Louisiana, Miss Andrea S. Hampton, Houston, Texas, Mrs. Linda H. Ball, Houston, Texas, Mr. Oyama Hampton, III, Little Rock, Arkansas, Miss Lisa M. Dunn, Columbus, Ohio, Miss Kathy J. Dunn, Augusta, Georgia and Miss Sonya N. Dunn, Augusta, Georgia; three great grandchildren; sons-inlaw, Mr. Oyama Hampton, Jr., Little Rock, Arkansas, Mr. James H. Dunn, Augusta, Georgia; grandsons-in-law, Mr. Herbert M. Scott, Dr. Reginald Barnes, Dr. Daniel W. Ball; two cousins, Mrs. Mattie Gardner, Mr. Marion Sims; one aunt, Mrs. Emma J. Frails, Harlem, Georgia; other cousins, relatives and friends. Such a gentle soul we shall never know again, Such love as warming as the noon-day sun, A s calming as a spring night's rain.
