Dr. Andrew James Chishom was bom in Augusta, Ga. on October 17 1942. He is the son of the late Junious and Janie Chishom. He was the eldest son of four children. Dr. Chishom departed this life on Wednesday August 7, 2013. He graduated from Lucy C. Laney High School in 1961. He received his undergraduate degree in criminology from the University of Maryland and both his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Georgia. He also received a Masters in Theology at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and he completed post masters studies at Harvard University. Dr. Chishom served his nation with distinction from 1963 to 1966 as a member of the United States Air Force and was a member of the United States Navy Reserves. Dr. Chishom was ordained into the ministry in 1980. Dr. Chishom was appointed as the first African American Juvenile Parole Officer in South Carolina in 1969 and he served as chairman of the Greenville, SC Drug Abuse Council. In 1971, former Governor Jimmy Carter appointed Dr. Chishom as the first African-American Probation Supervisor in the state of Georgia. Dr. Chishom would later become a key figure in the campaign resulting in Jimmy Carters election to the presidency of the United States. In 1974, Dr. Chishom was hired as the first African-American Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Chishom would go on to become a full tenured professor at USC. Dr. Chishom had a long and distinguished career at USC and retired from USC in 2003. During his time at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Chishom held numerous faculty appointments and assumed many advisory roles to the junior faculty and students. In 1976 President Jimmy Carter appointed Dr. Chishom as the first African-American United States Marshal in the South since Reconstruction. Dr. Chishom served as pastor at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Chester, SC, Zion Chapel Baptist Church Columbia, SC, and Believers in Christ Baptist Church Columbia, SC. Dr. Chishom served as the director of the nationally recognized Southern Region Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention Center. Dr. Chishoms many accomplishments include Co-founder, first national chairman and chairman emeritus of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (N ABC J); Founder and Chairman of the Five-Point Youth Violence Prevention Program: Founder of the Columbia Midnight Basketball Program: and serving as a criminal justice consultant to the state of Florida, Scotland Yard, the Egyptian government, and the US Dept, of Justice. He was honored by his high school Alma Mater Lucy Laney in Augusta, Ga through the establishment of a memorial of his many accomplishments. Dr. Chishom touched many lives in his career as a pastor and as a professor. He was committed to the advancement and well being of the youth in our community. Dr. Chishom served his community throughout his professional career and endeavored to put the needs of others before his own. However, his greatest accomplishment was being a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Known as Poppy to his beloved grandchildren. He leave to cherish his memory his Wife, Lottie Screen Chishom; his three children, Dr. Mark A. Chishom and spouse Dr. Patrice G. Chishom, Mr. Andre Chishom and Spouse Miriam V. Chishom, and Wendi Chishom; one sister, Ann (Otis) Bryson; and nine grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other cousins and friends.
