Hall Nursing Center who treated Henry with loving care and. respect..And special thanks to Regency Hospice who the Lord sent to Henry in his last days to ease hisjourney home. You were a blessing!!

Dea. Henry C. Byrd not only repeated these words many times, he also lived and died by them. On December 23, 2005, with the help of the Lord he completed his final earthly journey, traveling from this life to eternity--secure in the knowledge that he was going home to his Father who made heaven and earth. 
Henry Chauncey Byrd, Sr. was bom on April 4, 1925 in Aiken County, South Carolina to the late Rev. Frankie Byrd, Sr. and Esther Staley Byrd. He received his early, formal education in the schools of Aiken County, and he attended Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina. He valued education and never stopped learning, using formal education and self-study to continue to expand his knowledge. 
In his youth, Henry confessed the Lord Jesus and united with the Zion Hill Baptist Church. As a young, married man, he joined the Second Baptist Church where he then worked and served for over 50 years. During his time at Second Baptist, he was a member of the L. L. Phillips Gospel Chorus and was a deacon. Recognized for his leadership and love, he was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Deacons and served in that capacity for 23 years. He was a member of the Effingham Lodge #98 and the American Legion Post 212 of Aiken and of the Consistory 136 of Columbia, South Carolina. He also served in the United States Navy. 
Henry worked hard and was often recognized for his conscientiousness and dedication. He was employed for a few years in the 1950s at the Savannah River Plant. He was an Insurance Agent for the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. He was one of the owners and for many years, was the manager of the Kwick-Way Convenience Store on Hampton Avenue in Aiken. The majority of his years of employment were spent as a laboratory technician for the Veterans Administration Hospital, retiring in 1987 after 23 years of distinguished service. As an employee, he was proudest of his contributions to bum research, working on many projects that helped to advance treatment for patients suffering from bums. 
Henry was married to the former Bessie Palmore on April 19, 1948. To this union, two children were born. Eight brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. 
Henry was a gentle but strong man. He understood and practiced the words of Jesus, "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and soul and love thy neighbor as thyself." He worked in his community to make life better for all he touched--mentoring many children, assisting the needy, counseling, and through his love and example, witnessing about the blessings of a life with Christ. 
 
Henry leaves many to cherish his memory and to thank the Lord for the blessing of his life and companionship. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Bessie Palmore Byrd; his son, Henry C. Byrd, Jr. and wife, Patt, Bradenton, FL; his daughter, Janet Byrd Harrison and husband, Charles, Aiken, SC; one grandson, Charles Fitzgerald Harrison, Atlanta, GA; two granddaughters, Chanda Janel Byrd and Talore Danielle Harrison, both of Aiken, SC; a sister, Queen Esther Rouse, New Ellenton, SC; a brother, Lawrence Byrd and wife Ruby, Washington, DC; two sisters-in-law, Mary L. Washington, Newark, NJ; Joan P. Farver, Augusta, GA; a loving nephew, W. Quincy Murphy and wife, Dianne, Augusta, GA; one great-granddaughter, Havalyn Bilea Dom; an 'adopted' daughter, Gwendolyn L. Byrd; two God-children, Beryl W. Garrett and Charles Anthony Lewis; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Speak to me PaPa, for I need to hear your voice. I need to see you so that I can rejoice. I need your arms to hug me forever. And I need your hands that are as soft as feathers. I need you to grab my ear and give it a gentle tug. One of the many ways you showed me love. I need your eyes to watch me as I grow Because for you, I always put on a show. I need to see your face, because it reminds me of my mom's. She's just like you, always so nice and calm. Just come and sit right beside me. I need you here so things are how they are supposed to be. I know, I know, now it is your time to rest, But PaPa you do not understand, I have not given you my best. I had so much more to say and to do, But suddenly my time was up and I never knew. I'm fine PaPa, I really am because now you know how I feel. But before I finish my thoughts let me make a deal. I promise to live my life caring for others like you did. I promise to have courage and not be afraid like a little kid. I promise to continue loving Grandma and doing more for her, But I know you will always have your eye on her, too. PaPa, I'm not saying goodbye, because I will see you again 
some day. I'll just have to remember to speak to you when I pray. Just know I love you so much, And I'm missing your gentle touch. Do not worry about me, because soon I will be fine, And from now on when I look in the night sky, your star will
