She was the oldest of nine children; five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Hattie entered into glory on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at her home. At an early age, she was baptized and received the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior at the Hale Street Baptist Church. Sister Byrd, as her church family knew her, was the mother of the church. Sister Byrd loved her church and her church family. She was a loyal, faithful, and devoted member and she attended until her health failed. Hattie received her education in the Richmond County School System. She worked for the Board of Education School System as a cook for forty-five years. She was also employed by the family of Dr. David Cundey for a number of years. She leaves to cherish and celebrate her life: a loving and devoted daughter, Minnie L. Beard; sister, Laura (Willie) Walden; sister-in-law, Melvina Owens, all of Augusta, GA; grandson, Willie A. (Linda) Beard III, Bryans Road, Maryland; two great-grand children, Rico Beard and LaTonya Clarkson, Maryland; five great-great-grand children, Devon, Alexis, Ceres, Isaiah, and Daekwon, Maryland; son-in-law, Willie A. Beard, Jr; eight nephews, nine nieces, and a host of cousins and sorrowing friends; special friends, Sister Daisy Johnson, Sister Sophia Allen, Sister Laura Nabitt, Sister Nelli West. Predeceased family members: son, Richard (Singer) Owens; five brothers, Henry, David, Jesse, Richard, and Ozzie Owens; two sisters, Mildred O. Mackie and Anna O. Wright.
