Martin Antioch M issionary Baptist Church Voices of Antioch Baptist Church pM Elegance, strength, courage and tenacity describe Rosa Tarver Beard - an educator, youth and community leader. A woman of great distinction, Mrs. Rosa Tarver Beard, founded various organizations that have improved the lives of countless young women and men ^ throughout the Central Savannah River Area. One of her most notable accomplishments is t e founding of the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club, an organization that has advised and cultured/ young women for over forty-seven years. On December 9, 2010, she transitioned to be with the Lord. < Rosa T. Beard was born in Blythe, Georgia on November 22,1919? the oldest child to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Gartrell (Ollie Brown) Tarver. Before settling with her parents in the Turpin Hill neighborhood of Augusta, Georgia, she traveled with her parents across the state ot Georgia residing in Cairo and Thomasville. She was baptized at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Blythe in her early teens. Mrs. Beard was introduced to Antioch Baptist Church in Augusta as a child by her future aunt-in-law, Mrs. Adelle Blanchard. It was during walks to Antioch that she and Ernest Beard developed a fondness for each other. They courted for several years and on June 27,1948, she married the love of her life. Their marriage was blessed by four loving children: Rosa Ann, Kathryn Inrraine, Ernest Eric, and Cheryl Juanita. After 18 years of marriage, Mr. Ernest Beard departed this life on July 11,1966. Mrs. Beard remained faithful past her vows and has now rejoined Mr. Beard in their eternal home. When she arrived in Augusta, Mrs. Beard was enrolled at Steed Street School (now Collins) for her primary education. She furthered her education at Paine High School, one of three tuition-based schools, as there was no public high school for African Americans in Augusta. After graduating in 1938, she matriculated to Paine College where she obtained a Bachelor s degi ee in Home Economics and Natural Science in 1942 She continued at Columbia Univeisity Teachers College in New York, earning her Masters of Education and Chemistry in 1951. Mrs. Beard completed additional post-graduate work at Farleigh Dickson University, Teaneck, New Jersey where she was certified by the National Science Foundation Summer Institute for Junior and Senior High School Teachers of Scie and Mathematics in August of 1961. A dedicated educator for 41 years, her professional career began in 1942 at Bettis Academy and Junior College in Trenton, South Carolina. During her tenure at Bettis Academy, she briefly taught French, coached the girl's basketball team and served as chair of the Science Department. After her marriage and the impending birth of her first child, she returned to her hometown of Augusta. Mrs. Beard accepted a teaching position with the Richmond County Board of Education and began serving at Charles T. Walker Elementary School. After the birth of her second daughter, Mrs. Beard was able to obtain a position in the upper grades, as she desired, and taught at Augustus R. Johnson Junior High School. When T. W. Josey High School opened in 1964, she transferred and taught there until her retirement m 1983. Mrs. Beard poured herself into her students as a teacher and mentor who maintained lifelong relationships of love and friendship. Her students highly respected her as an advisor committed to exposing them to life's possibilities and spurring them to reach their highest potential. As head of the Science Department at A. R. Johnson, she organized T&e'Rocket Club with male and female students interested in aeronautics and space study in 1958, which followed to T. W. Josey. Many of these students were inspired to achieve great accomplishments. Her work with the Rocket Club led to a position pioneering the leadership of a summer program for high school students at the Medical College of Georgia in the early 1970s. In 1963, also w'hile at A. R. Johnson and in the horrid midst of racism, six female students approached Mrs. Beard to request her sponsorship of aerogram that would support them in being recognized for their worth as young black women. In addition, they wanted to experience additional social, cultural and community participation to broaden their horizons and prepare them for womanhood in a world that was struggling with the acceptance of African Americans. Committed to the academic, social and cultural development of youth, Mrs. Beard organized the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club, sponsored by the Augusta Adult Society, Inc.. For nearly five decades she dedicated her life to grooming the thousands of young women impacted by the experience. Her legacy continues in grooming high school girls for adult society. An humble and caring woman of character and lofty principles, Rosa Beard dedicated her life to serving Christ through serving others. She diligently served at Antioch Baptist Church for some 50 years, participating in several choirs, as , a Sunday School teacher, missionary, and Trustee. After moving to the Atlanta area with her daughters, she attended New Life Church, under the leadership of Reverend Marlin Harris. Some of her community involvement over the years included lifetime membership in the Paine College Alumni Association, founding Delta Sigma Theta Sorority - Augusta Alumnae Chapter, lifetime membership in the N.A.A.C.P., and generous supporter of local, national, and international ncerns to bless people. Mrs. Beard has been recognized as an educator, for er service with young people in general, young women in particular, and her mitment to the CSRA community. .fully, Mrs. Beard entered into peaceful rest, on Thursday, December 9th at b Medical at Hillandaie. In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Beard was preceded in death by a half sister, Evie Lou Hamilton; adopted sister, Catherine Long; and her grandson Ernest Derrick Beard, with whom she had a special bond. Left to cherish her memory are: her four children, Rosa Lind (Herman), Ellenwood, GA; Kathryn Willis (Ashley), Lithonia, GA; Ernest Eric Beard (Patricia), Cocoa, FL; and Cheiyl J. Beard, Memphis, TN; five grandchildren, Katrina Lind Rucker (Sholon), Charles Beard, Jennifer Lind, Ashli "Becky" Willis, and Eugene Beard; six great-grandchildren Alijah, Niyla, Charles Jr., Ebony, Sholon, and DeCarlos. one sister, Mrs. Louise T. Jackson of Augusta; half-sister, Mrs. Novella Wright of Cleveland, OH; a dear niece Dr. Anita L. Jackson, Raleigh, NC; a devoted son and daughter in-law, Herman Lind, and Vilma (Robert) Smith; an aunt, Mrs. Idella Walker d aunt-in-law, Mrs. Allie B. Jones of Augusta, GA; a devoted friend and "adopted" hter, Sandra B. Wimberly; a wealth of nieces, nephews, cousins, debutantes, former ts, colleagues, godchildren, and friends to treasure her legacy.
