Greenville Memorial Garden OBITUARY MRS.MARDEYOUNGBATES,daughterofthelateJohnHenry and Nannie M. Young was born in Clinton, South Carolina. She resided at 109 Wardlow Street, Greenville for many years until her death at Greenville Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, May 15,1990. Mrs. Bates attended the public schools of Laurens County, was a graduate and outstanding recruiter and supportive alumus of Alien University, Columbia, South Carolina. She also did advance studies at Lincoln and Michigan State Universities. Mrs. Bates was a faithful and dedicated member of Alien Temple AM.E. Church. She was loved and respected by all of her fellow members as was reflected in her being a member of the Board of Stewards, the Commission of Membership and Finance, a memberof the building fund committe, and the Sunday School Board. For many year, she served as a Youth Sunday School Instructor and was also a member of the Lay Organization. Mrs. Bates had served as a Trustee and a member of the L. J. Coppin senior missionary society. As an educator, Mrs. Bates touched the lives ofmany in the schools and communties inwhich she taught. These included Pickens, Anderson, Laurens, and until her retirement, she was a teacher in the School District of Greenville County. She was very active in civic and community activities: a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc; founder of the Greenville Section of National Council of Nergo Women in which she was a Life Member, an achiever and State Organizer ofSections; also she held membership on various local boards and commissions. Because of her numerous affiliations, she was a role model and pacesetter for women in the community and was greatly respected by everyone, especially the youth with whom she came in contact. Mrs. Bates set the trend for innovation and change in Greenville and received many awards and recognition for her accomplishments. She became the first black female radio personality for WFBC-FM (WYFF) hosting her own radio program, (The Marie Bates Variety Show) from 1953-1955. Her family will forever cherish her memory - a sister, Miss Mattie M. Young of Clinton, South Carolina; three sister-in-law, Mrs. Pear Bates of New York, NY, Mrs. Mildred Bates of Greenville, SCand Mrs. Martha Moore ofWashington, DC; two nieces, Mrs. Jessie V. Brown ofClinton, SC and Mrs, Nannie V. Conway of Washington, DC; one nephew, Mr. Joseph Moore of Saratoga Springs, NY; two great nieces, Miss Shelley Moore and Mrs. Deborah Gore both of Washington, DC and many other relatives and friends.
