Description:: A black and white photograph of the interior of the Science Lecture Room in the Knowles Industrial Building at Atlanta University. Science is misspelled "Scenic" in the photograph. The Science Lecture Room includes student desks, cabitnets housing various scienctific equipment, a globe, and various rocks at the front of the classroom. The Knowles Industrial Building was built in 1884 for the use of the mechanical department. The building included carpenter's benches, wood-turning lathes, a forge room, and a room for mechanical drawing. Atlanta University opened on October 13, 1869. The University offered training for African American students of all ages including kindergarten, grade school, normal industrial, academy and college.
