Dr. Horace Bumstead served as president of Atlanta University from 1888 until 1907. During his leadership Atlanta University attracted Carnegie funds for the library, a university press was established, a student publicantion began, and football was introduced. Dr. Bumstead was an advocate for the education of African Americans his whole life. Atlanta University opened on October 13, 1869.
