- Description:
- Low Black male college persistence has continued to plague the American higher education system despite the many programmatic efforts established. While many researchers have examined the impact of social engagement, very few have specifically analyzed the impact of Black Greek Letter Fraternities (BGLF) as a catalyst to address educational needs for Black males. This qualitative research study was designed to explore the experiences and voices of BGLF members and the impact membership has on their college satisfaction, academic success, leadership skills, and sense of belonging while attending a historically black college or university (HBCU). Nine themes emerged from the shared experiences of the participants: (a) Life Changing, (b) Accountability, (c) High Expectations, (d) Change Agentry, (e) Personal Development, (f) Leadership Development, (g) Mentorship, (h) Social Engagement, and (i) Solidified Campus Connection. The findings revealed that BGLF membership creates a positive Black student experience, positive academic outcomes, opportunities to enhance leadership skills, and a more robust connection to their HBCU. Further implications were provided for Black males, HBCU leaders, student life and fraternity and sorority offices, and Fraternal Leadership at the national level. Future research is recommended to advance knowledge of the impact of BGLOs on members’ success in college and beyond.
