- Description:
- In the 1990s, non-wood forest products (NWFPs) have attracted significant attention among researchers even though they have been around for centuries. This study is an initial attempt to use a quantitative method to demonstrate the economic impact of NWFPs in the forest communities in the U.S. The informal structure and lack of data availability of most NWFPs markets presents several challenges to predicting consumer and producer behavior. Hence, wild American ginseng was used as a case study. The study used OLS to estimate price elasticities of demand and supply. These elasticities were used as inputs in the Price Endogenous Linear Programming System (PELPS) to estimate the equilibrium quantity and price. The equilibrium is then interpreted as the point where the total surplus (welfare) is maximized.
