- Description:
- Educator, civil rights activist, and author, Dr. Carol Anderson, talks about her book, "White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide". Dr. Anderson discusses her motivation to write this book in response to the characterization of Black rage for the African American led protests and uprisings against numerous nationwide police shootings of black men. She noted "with so much attention on the flames, everyone had ignored the kindling". In her book and lecture, Dr. Anderson provides a historical overview and analysis of legislation and court cases that reveal how white rage is manifested through systemic public policy to undercut African American advancements in social progress in America. Dr. Anderson is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor and Chair of the African-American Studies department at Emory University. She is also author of two other award-winning books - Eyes Off the Prize: The United Nations and the African-American Struggle for Human Rights, 1944-1955 and Bourgeois Radicals: The NAACP and the Struggle for Colonial Liberation, 1941-1960. This lecture is a program in association with the exhibit, "Start Something Activism and the Atlanta Student Movement" displayed at the AUC Woodruff Library October 2015- May 2017.
