Hill joined the West Point Guards, Co. D, 4th Georgia Infantry. Elected 2nd lieutenant, then promoted to 1st lieutenant in May, he resigned at the reorganization in 1862. Since West Point sat on the Alabama line, he reenlisted in an Alabama infantry regiment.
