Smith was elected captain of the La Grange Light Guards in April 1861, a unit that became Company B, 4th Georgia. He was elected major of the regiment in May 1862, but was killed at the battle of Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862, "and by his death," wrote a member of the command, " the regiment lost one of its brightest ornaments." General D.H. Hill reported that Smith " fell fighting most heroically at Sharpsburg.
