Jones joined the Baldwin Blues in April 1861. He stayed with his command, Company H., 4th Georgia Infantry until the end of the war. He rose from corporal to lieutenant. After the battle of Chancellorsville, General George Doles reported that he acknowledged his "indebtedness" to Jones for his "promptness and gallantry".
