Mr. McAlpin was one of eight children. He was educated as a civil engineer, and worked on the construction of the South-Western Railroad between Albany and Macon. Mr. McAlpin served in the Confederate Army for the entire war. He became a wealthy planter on the Savannah River with his wife, Maria S. Champion. Mr. McAlpin and his wife had five children together.
