The National Conference of Artists supports African American art and culture. During its twentieth anniversary conference, it also held workshops at the Neighborhood Arts Center in silkscreen, portfolios, audio-visual art, health hazards, and "Afro-Raku" ceramic firing. Melton became a Neighborhood Arts Center artist-in-residence in ceramics in February 1979 and left in October 1980 to teach in private schools.
