Quincy. Carswell, OfticUJting - ~ Mr. Roy LyndeU Yancy Sr., son of the late William and Mattie Yancy, was born November 12, 1957 in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Smith High School, Atlanta, Georgia in 1974. He served in the United States Army from 1975 through 1978 during which time he received training from John Hopkins University Hospital and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. He worked in this capacity at the Veteran's Administration Hospi talfor the nextfour years. During this time he also graduate from Gupton-lones College of Funeral Service where he received his license as a Funeral Director. Roy, however quickly realized that his true calling in life was community service and working behind the scenes in the political arena. He was an active member of the Democratic Party and he worked on several community service activities throughout his life. Selected Notable Accomplishments: -Delegate to the Democratic National Committee, Member ofthe State Democratic Executive Committee; and Member ofthe Fulton County Democratic Party. -Former Chairman ofthe Fulton County Library Board ofTrustees. -Former Chairman ofthe City ofAtlanta Neighborhood Planning Unit Z (N_PUZ). - Member of the steering committee that helped to build the state-of the-art South east Recreation Center. - Member ofthe steering committee that brought the Lakewood Amphitheater into the community. He served as the Office Manager for the Southside Job Counsel and was responsiblefor acquiring jobs to be placed at the Amphitheater. He also setup and wrote the criteria for the Oversight and Finance Committees. - Former Chairman ofthe APAD organization where he served as a member ofthe Olympic delegation that went to Tokyo, Japan when the City ofAtlanta was awarded the 1996 Summer Olympics Games. - Member of the Smith High/King Middle School Advisory Committee, that helped build Southside High School. -Member ofthe leadership team that helped secure money for the relocation ofthe residents in the Atkins Simon Community. -He worked on numerous political campaigns. He was also a board member ofthe Southside Day Care Center, the Health South Community Clinic and Economic Opportunity Atlanta. -He was the President and CEO ofSouthside Stadium Cleaning Service. This was a very sucessful Minority Owned Business. The company employed 98% of it's stafffrom neighborhoods surrounding the oldAtlanta Fulton County Stadium. -His current position was at the Southeast Recreation Center where he served as a senior staffmember and special assistant to the Center Director. - He was the recipient of the John C. Birdie Award for Outstanding Community Service and the Fulton County Library Awardfor Outstanding Service and Leadership. He departed this life on September 21, 1999 and leaves to mourn two loving and devoted children Roy L. Yancy Jr. and Santina L. Yancy and their mother Yolanda; brothers, William Jr., Julius and Wilbur; sisters, Bettye, Cheryl, Angela, Karen, and Corrie, brotherin-laws Willie James, Norman, Stanley, John and Michael; sister-in-laws Robyn and Geraldine, 10 nieces, 10 nephews, 3 great nieces, 1 great nephew, several aunts and uncles, a devoted friend James, a host ofother relatives and many, many friends.
