She was born to the union of Mannie and Mollie Givens, Sr. on January 9, 1929 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mattie accepted Christ at an earlier age and was baptized by the late Reverend W. M. Pitcher at Greater Risen Sun Baptist Church. She married the late Henry Wells, Jr. She and her husband made their home in the community of Scotlandville. They were members of Bethlehem Baptist Church where they served as Deacon and Deaconess many years. Through this matrimony they had two daughters. After 27 years of dedicated service and commitment, she retired as a Cook III from Earl K. Long Medical Center. Her love for cooking continued as she served in the Kitchen Ministry at the Greater Risen Sun Baptist Church. Mattie enjoyed preparing delicious meals and cakes for her family and friends. She leaves to cherish and celebrate her memory are her children Cassandra (Paul, Jr.) Smith, Yetta Wells Toliver of Lewisville, TX, Barbara (Leonard) Collins, Bernard (Theresa) Wells, George (Darlene) Lewis, Jr. of Lewisville, TX; a sister, Alice (Wilbert) McKnight; a sister-in-law, Deloris D. Givens of Atlanta, GA; an aunt, Lena Robinson; 13 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
