DEACON SONNEY WASIDNGTON was born December 15, 1888 to the late Jim and Lucenda Washington in Clinton, Louisiana. He departed this life on August 29~ 1980.
Deacon Washington confessed Christ at an early age and from that time on he was a faithful servant of our Lord and Savior. He was ordained a deacon at the Greengrove Missionary Baptist Church in Dadsville, Mississippi. When he moved to Chicago, he joi ned the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for approximately forty years, faithfully carrying out the duties of a deacon until his health failed him.
"For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain" (Phil. 1:21) This is the message that Deacon Washington is leaving with us as he rests with his heavenly Father. As we memorialize this humble man today, we believe he felt this way because he loved the Lord and always quoted Psalm 121:1, 2. "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. "
He looked forward to spending eterni1lY where, "God shall wipe away all tears... and the'"he shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be anymore pain;for the former things are passed away." (Rev. 21:4)
He leaves on his home-going, one sister, Elsie Spurlock; one niece that was like a daughter, Louisa Archibald; six other nieces; nine nephews;and a host of relatives and friends.
