OSCAR LEE VINSON, JR., born December 23, 1927, was one of five children born to the union ofthe late Mr. Oscar Lee Vinson, Sr. and Mrs. Rosa Lee Grier Vinson of Macon, GA. He passed peacefully in his home Tuesday, January 23, 2007. His early education was begun at M. M. Burdell Elementary and Ballard High School. Additional study was done at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. At an early age, Oscar joined St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where he became a devoted willing worker. His bass voice led him to sing with the Senior Choir and he was honored to serve on the Trustee Board for a number ofyears. Oscar served Twenty (20) years in the United States Army and the Army Reserves. He also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He became a trail blazer in the civil rights movement in Macon. One ofthe results ofhis work was the desegregation of Bowden Golf Course and the founding of the New Era GolfAssociation. Mr. Vinson was preceded in death by his daughter, Arzatia M. Harris and his brothers, Freddie S. Vinson, Julius C. Vinson and J. Matthew Vinson. Joining this celebration are the following: a loving and devoted wife, Barbara King Vinson; his daughter, Anita Yvonne Vinson Britman (Earl P. ); his sister, Griemette Vinson Rogers; his grandchildren, Charlyque Joy Harris, Charlton Jermaine Harris, Christopher Jarvis Harris and Amber Janelle Britman; great grandchildren, Tahjie Yisiin Harris, Christavian Harris, Keyondra Nicole Harris, Corrian Peoples, Kennedy Amia Harris, Charlton Jermaine Harris, Jr. and Janea Arnold; his sister-in-law, Helen B. Vinson; son-in-law, Charlie Harris, Jr.; loyal caregivers, other distant relatives and many other friends.
