 OBITUARY 
Lewis Eugene Turner (Gene) was born on April 3, 1940, to the late Robert Harris, Sr. and Rosia I<ate Turner in Stockbridge, Georgia. Gene gave his life to Christ at a young age at Trinity United Methodist Church. He received his formal education through the Henry County School System where he graduated in 1957 and attended Albany State University in 1958. 
Gene joined the Mount Olive Baptist Church in 1961 and served faithfully as a dedicated choir member and trustee. With singing being one of his passions, he along with other members helped form the Mt. Olive Male Choir. He also sang with a couple of gospel groups as well. During this year, he was joined in holy matrimony with Tommie Lee Phelps and through this union two sons were born. 
For over twenty years, he worked for E. R. Squibb & Son in shipping and receiving. Some of his hobbies consisted of gardening, traveling, fishing, hunting and socializing with friends and family. It was nothing for him to drop what he was doing and find a creek or pond just to see if any fish were biting or during hunting season, he would often just find a patch of woods to search for rabbits, squirrels and deer. 
Throughout his life he enjoyed many sports \.vith baseball being his favorite. Gene was drafted as a pitcher by the Kansas City A's now known as the Oakland A's. He also had a long career in coaching and umpiring baseball and football in the city of Stockbridge. He was the first black little league coach in Stockbridge and an icon in drawing youth to participate in sports. 
Early Monday, July 8, 2013, God whispered and said "My servant, it is time to come Home." His warm, outgoing spirit and contagious laughter will truly be missed by all. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Tommie, two sons, Michael (Vonda) of Decatur, Georgia, Jeffrey (Gloria) of McDonough, Georgia, two grandchildren, Andre and Anton, and step mother, Annie Pearl Harris. 
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Martin Harris and Alonzo Hatcher. Left to cherish his memories are seven brothers: James (Sylvia) Harris, John Robert ( udrey) Harris, Earnest Han:is, Robert Jr. (Currie) Harris, Stanley Harris, Calvin Harris, Spencer Harris and one sister Hattie Ponder along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins.
