McCallister Hollins, Senior Pastor Officiating OBITUARY Mr. Billy Tanner was born on December 23, 1933, to Mrs. Rosa Lee Thompson and Mr. Mercie Tanner in Decatur, Georgia. Billy attended public schools in Athens, Georgia and Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from high school in 1952 and joined the United States Army. His tour of duty, while in the armed forces, included Korea and Vietnam. He retired as Staff Sergeant in July of 1972. After retirement, he was employed by the United States Post Office, Bulk Mail Facility. During his employment, he worked as a mail handler and held the position of QWL Coordinator. He retired from the Postal Service in 1992. He was united in marriage to Marie Hicks. Billy and Marie were the proud parents of two daughters, Leslie Tanner Scott and Rozetta Tanner-Allen and one son, Frederick Leon Griffin. The Tanners joined Ben Hill United Methodist Church in 1979. Billy was very active in the Majestic Choir, the Male Chorus and was a staunch supporter of the Hospitality Committee. Billy was Ben Hill's "Man of the Year" in 1989. He will be remembered for his humor and quick wit. He made his transition to life eternal on January 25, 1995. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Marie; two daughers, Mrs. Leslie Tanner Scott and Mrs. Rozetta & Dr. Roosevelt Allen, Jr.; a son, Mr. Frederick Leon Griffin; his mother, Mrs. Rosa Lee Thompson; six loving grandchildren, Brandon Christopher Allen, Jasmine Marie Allen, Justin Miguel Allen, Andrew Carlton Allen, Jordan Roosevelt Allen and LaTazha Phillips; sisters and brothers include Ms. Evelyn Harden, Ret. SGM and Mrs. Thomas Miller (Shirley) of Anniston, AL; Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Lee Collier (Ann); Ms. Eloise Arnold, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Lee Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Arnold of Lewisburg, TN, and a host of other relatives and friends.
