 MRS. IRENE SAMUEL POOLE, the daughter of the late Washington and Margaret Kelly Samuel was born in Darlington County on April17, 1902. She departed this life on Thursday, June 2, 1994 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law after an illness. 
She attended the public schools of Darlington County. 
She was a lifelong member of Friendship Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Society, the Senior Choir and the Adult Bible Class. 
Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Catherine P. Bruce . of Darlington and Mrs. Doretha P. Ham of Philadelphia, Pa.; one son, Rev. Jordan Poole of Darlington, S. C.; one son-in-law, Mr. Walter Bruce, Jr. of the home; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Poole and Mrs. Ruby Poole both of Darlington, S. C.; one sister, Mrs. Maggie S. Hicks of Darlington; twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, a host of cousins, nieces, n~phews, other relatives and friends.

MRS. IRENE SAMUeL POOLE, (Named after her Grandmother on her fathers side) was born April 17, 1902 on Mechanicsville Road, Darlington, South Carolina to Margaret Kelly Samuel and Washington Samuel. She was the fifth child of eleven children: James, Clayton, Albertus, Joshua, Irene, Elijah, Townsel, Boyd, Frank, /siah and Maggie. 
 
She attended school at Cherry Grove School. IRENE was always a very quiet child but very smart. Being the first girl and the apple of her . father's eye, he did not want her to do anything but help her mother in the 
home. He did not want her to work in the fields. IRENE cried a half day to hoe cotton like her brothers, so her father Washington said, "If you are that crazy, I'll fix you a hoe and let you go to work in the fields." She learned to do everything on the [ann except plow. They would not let her do that. 
 
  She loved following her brothers and doing whatever they did, from : 
 
climbing trees in the woods to baseball games. To this day she still enjoys 
 
watching baseball games.

IRENE never did and still does not like wearing red. As a child her father bought l:zer dressed trimmed in red and she cried. 
 
She loves singing and now you can hear her singing to the glory of 
God when she get up in the morning and sometimes she sing herself to sleep at night. 
 
She learned to sew at a very early age. The first thing she made was a brown shambridge dress which she purchased the material herself Her mother who felt she was only going to make a mess, would not give her any material. She just got down on the floor and cut it out. When it was finished, it looked so good, her mother then got her some material and she has been sewing every since, and sometimes help her daughter, Catherine (whom she taught) sew on buttons to this very day. 
 
IRENE was always a healthy child, except when she was five years old. She was very ill and they thought she would die, but God saw fit to keep her here to celebrate her ninety-second birthday. She never ever had

a vaccination. Somehow when that was being done at school, she was absent. 
IRENE accepted the Lord as her personal Savior in 1919, the Friday night before the fourth Sunday in November and was baptized that Sunday by Rev. J. A. Kirkland at Macedonia Baptist Church which was located on Main Street where Western Auto Store is. Since thaf day, she has never forgotten and says. "that God's grace has kept her and by his grace she .will continue until the Lord calls her home." 
IRENE has never spent a day or night in the hospital because of her illness. She had her first shot of anykind at the age of sixty-two or so. She was still in pretty good health, only arthritis. She says the Lord takes care of her and she does not have much faith in doctors. 
IRENE is and always was a quiet, hardworking person. She loved 
 to stay at home unless she was working or helping some neighbor in distress, going from house to house for prayer meeting and church on sunday when she could. 
IRENE was manied on September 10, 1928 to the late Fred D. Poole. To this union seven children were born (four boys, three girls), six of whom they raised to be grown and three of whom is still living and here today. (one boy and two girls) She is, an always was, a good mother, raised her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, taught them to fear God, respect for themselves and others, to obey and respect grown folks. There was only right and wrong, a lie or the tntth, no middle ground. She does not go along with her children, grandchildren or anyone doing something wrong. 
She has twenty-four grandchildren and twenty-nine grea grandchildren. Her sister, maggie Hicks is still with us and they enjoy some great times together sitting and talking. She has lots of nieces and nephews to the fourth and fifth generations. Many cousins and many friends and acquaintances. 
Thank You God for this our Mother and Sister in the Lord.
