In every generation, God see ms t o raise up some men who demonstrate tree top level experiences in hu man services. Not to know life at the heights, is to suffer an improverish ing incomplet eness. X.L. knew no incompleteness in pursu ing life as a Ch ri st ian, an educat or, a loving husband and an u nderstanding and indulgent fr iend to ma nkind. The son of Calvin Neal (a baptist minister) and Julia H. Neal of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, it appeared a foregone conclusion that he would follow his father and become a leader in the church. His scientific inclinations and mathematical acuity, instead, led him to pursue his love for chemistry. He enrolled at Morehouse College and majored in Chemistry, pursued further graduate study at Atlanta University and received a Pharmaceutical Chemist degree from Meharry Medical College. Despite his professional practice of pharmacy, X.L. found the time to teach and inspire high school students in chemistry and to follow them into college where he simultaneously taught at Spelman, Morehouse and the Atlanta University summer school. His heart yearned to be involved in the enrichment of the lives of young men, for living. Encouraged by John Wesley Dobbs to become a Prince Hall Mason with membership in the W . C. Thomas Lodge Number 112, X.L. did just that, in pursuit of his personal fulfillment. He found the time to work his way up the Masonic ladder and became Deputy Grand Master, Prince Hall Masons, Jurisdiction of Georgia. Upon the death ofthe illustrious John Wesley Dobbs, in 1961, X.L. was elevated by the Jurisdiction of Georgia to its highest position, Grand Master at the next meeting of the Grand Lodge. The Grand Lodge Trestle board was laid out immediately with Neal's plans for carrying forward the work of his precedessor, in expanding the influence of Prince Hall Masonry within the state, attracting the best talent available for leadership training and supporting the thoughtful initiatives of the sisters of the Eastern Star. Upon his retirement in 1990, two hundred nineteen (219) lodges were in good standing with more than 22,000 active members, throughout the Jurisdiction of Georgia. X.L. looked at life from the tree-top level, always seeking the vantage point of the largest opportunity, to do good. This quiet and gentle man made contributions of rare quality as high school and college faculty member, fraternal leader and friend. His life which spanned more than four scores of this century has been a continuing source of inspiration.
