Church 23 Butler Street, Southeast Atlanta, Georgia 30303 NELSON MCGHEE, JR. M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.O.G., F.A.C.S. Nelson McGhee Jr., son of the late Sallie and Nelson McGhee, Sr. accomplished so much, so early in life that many often wondered where he found the energy. Born in 1931 in Hamilton, Georgia this doctor-humanitarian-academician-scholar set his sights on Talladega College, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree and met his partner for life Barbara Kathryn Knuckles. Dr. McGhee continued his education by earning a Master's Degree in biology from Atlanta University, followed by a M.D. from Meharry Medical College, an internship in South Bend, Indiana and thereafter he established a general practice in Gainesville, Georgia . He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri and later received his Doctorate in gerontology from Union Graduate School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. McGhee was one of the few African-Americans to hold these unique credentials in the country. Dr. Nelson McGhee was indeed a visionary. He was extensively involved in the initial development of the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) . When the School of Medicine became an independent institution in 1978, Dr. McGhee served as a member of its first Board of Trustees. He later accepted the position of Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics/ Gynecology. In 1990, Dr. McGhee became Vice Dean and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and he was named Interim President of the Morehouse School of Medicine from 19921994. In 1972, he co-founded The Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc. with long-time friend and colleague, Dr. DeLutha H. King, Jr. He was the Foundation President and served several terms as Chairman of the National Association for Sickle Cell Disease, Inc. The Georgia program served as a model for sickle cell centers across the country. Dr. McGhee published many articles and periodicals in the fields of obstetri cs and gynecology, aging, infant mortality, and sickle cell disease. He was widely acclaimed as a lecturer on a broad array of medical and social issues. He holds memberships in many professional organizations including the American College'of Surgeons, OB/GYN Society, Atlanta Medical Association, Geogia State Medical Association, National Medical Association , and the Association of GynecologicLaproscopists. He also served as a member of the Steward Board of the Butler Street C.M.E. Church , the National Health Committee of the NAACP, Atlanta Action Forum , the Fulton County Board of Health, Quality Living Services and the Georgia Department of Human Resources. He also served as Board Chairman of the lntergenerational Resource Center, Inc., United Way Task Force, National Council on Aging, Beta Kappa Chi National Honorary Society, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and others. Throughout his life, he received numerous honors, awards, and proclamations in recognition of his leadership and service in medical excellence and outstanding community participation . Dr. Nelson McGhee is survived by four siblings, Mary Jean Howell, Neva McGhee Williams , William McGhee, and Betty Chisolm. He was married for forty years to Barbara Kathryn Knuckles. To this union four children were born- Debra McGhee Speights, Nelson McGhee, Ill (Trey) , Sarita McGhee Poole and Carl Conrad McGhee, Esquire. Additionally, he leaves one son-in-law, Dr. Terrence Poole (Sarita), Cincinnati, Ohio, one daughter-in-law, Michelle Henderson McGhee (Mrs . Carl); three grandchildren- Eric Van Speights, Jr., Terris and Tera Poole. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
